  • Hey guys, just wanted to share our improvements to the rabbits watering system here. It is working very well and I plan on doing this in the barn for all the other rabbits. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching, and God bless.

    just a little hint ! wrap the bucket in a wet towel or some type of cloth, the evaporation will help keep the water cool. the same way the old canteens were covered in a horse blanket type material you wet the outside and it kept the water cool by evaporation.

    jnull0, I just came across your channel and love your tips and experience with the rabbits. As a small time rabbit raiser like you, I have had to find more efficient ways to get things done. I like the gravity feed water systems, but I took mine one step further for a few reasons. The Bucket: I connected it to my main water source with a float valve so that I do not have to fill it at all. Use the float valve from an evaporative cooler (swamp cooler) connected to a shut off valve to a water faucet. Water Delivery: I wanted my rabbits to always have clean water as well as cool water. Over time (at least here) algae will grow in the water tube. To avoid that, I put a small $10 fountain pump on the bucket connected to the water tube and at the last NIPPLE (HAHAHA) [drink spout] I put a return tube to the bucket. The moving water does not allow the algae to grow. This setup allowed me to only need a 2 gallon bucket and you could probably get away with a 1 gallon if you wanted. I currently have 34 rabbits (15 are kits) drinking from this $30 setup and I have the EXACT drink spouts you do. Conclusion: Fresh & clean, always on and full of water drinking system for my rabbits. This has been running for 2 years now with no issues. Last winter, I added an aquarium heater in the bucket to keep the water from freezing. My rabbits are inside an uninsulated building, but it works well for here in West Texas. Just thought I would toss that your way.

      LC Cox if you make it completely effortless it surely will take longer to notice any issues...but that's def an awesome setup you have :)

    I have the same type of system and live in Central Indiana so similar weather.
    1. It will freeze the moment outside temps get to 32°F regardless if you use hot water or not. I have thought to put a circulator pump with tank heater to see if I could keep it from freezing but haven't tried yet.
    2. I have used round plastic paint cans and same connection with silicon caulking and worked with no leaks.
    C. Also in addition to my 1 gallon paint can that is the "yellow bucket" in my system I flipped upside down a 5 gallon water cooler jug into my bucket and have almost 6 gallons capacity to my system. Just like an office water cooler fountain. It last about a week for 10 or so rabbits.
    4. Have a great day

    John, a lot of people have already mentioned algae possibilities for the bucket, but I have another similar recommendation for you. When you can, replace that clear tubing with opaque tubing. I have an aquaponics system and attempted to use clear tubing, thinking the water, which was constantly flowing, would be moving too much for algae to grow. I was wrong. Inside of a few weeks, the tube went from clear to green.
    You might be able to help it stay clear by filling the line with a bleach solution a couple times a month to kill off any algae trying to grow, then flushing the lines and hooking them back up.
    Just my two cents.
    Keep up the great videos. I always look forward to them!
    -Larry

    Hey JNull0, for the 'Winter' maybe get another bucket and paint the outside of it black? Or You could try some aluminum backed insulation, and paint it black, and use that to cover your bucket, that way the heat from the sun would be able to keep the water from freezing, not entirely certain of your solar exposure, or the ambient temperatures in your area, but its a suggestion that may just work for you!
    Also I know they sell little submersible heaters for bird bathes, look around and see if they have a solar version that might work for your application.

  • @CometSkeeter

    I like that system. In the winter you could put a water heater in the bucket. that should help you can get one at the feed store.

    • @peterk.9994
      @peterk.9994 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Comet Skeeter Unfortunately, the volume and flow of water in the plastic tubes is so small and the surface area so large (relatively), that no matter how warm you keep the water in the bucket, that's not going to keep the water in the tubes from freezing unless the tubing (and nipples) are also heated/insulated/otherwise protected.

    make it a self watering system by putting in a small toilet tank float in the bucket. the small cost of a bulkhead fitting to go through the bottom of the bucket and pvc pipe for the water supply will more than pay for itself in the long run. FYI, i have used this setup and it works great. for a lack of a better word, goopy crap will build up in the tubing and plug the dew droppers. the ones i used could be taken apart and cleaned as needed. check every dropper every couple of months for good water flow

    This is good I have my setup almost the same way. You may want to reconsider using a bucket that is food safe. Most buckets that are not food safe can leech chemicals into the water and it can be stored within their bodies and then you can consume them.

    • @reeftanker84
      @reeftanker84 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      movinon04 painting the bucket black will cause it to get even hotter, we will see if algae grows or not but as for the rabbit barn it is not a worry since all buckets are in the shade and keep lids on to keep bugs out, so far we have noticed they go threw a bucket every couple days so the water is not standing for a long period of time

    Hi, how you are doing. If you want to make your chore even easier, you could rig up a self-filling bucket that employs a toilet fill valve, You need some other parts/adapters but it's quite a clever system, the bucket is hooked up to a water source (garden hose) and when the water drops it fills like a toilet tank and stops automatically at the adjusted level. Quite amazing I must tell you. Makes watering just about effortless.

    I'm thinking that using an Igloo water cooler type container, replacing the pushbutton spout with a barb fitting, might be a good thing for a rabbit system. It would block light, and if you put ice in it in the hot weather, it would keep it cool longer.
