EPISODE #04 of #Tarab3arabPodcast with the Permanent conductor of the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra Lubnan Baalbaki! Don't forget to like, subscribe, and share!
Having obtained a Phd from Romania (and a Masters from Vienna), Maestro Lubnan Baalbaki came back to Lebanon in a time that was much more stable than today.
In this episode, we shed a light on the reasons why the level of musicianship has been steadily decreasing in Lebanon throughout the years, the crumbling of the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra, the societal, political, and artistic realities behind this frightning collapse.

What's really interesting about this interview is a small passage where Lubnan criticises the notation tradition in the Arab world, claiming it's lacking and underdeveloped (paraphrasing of course), because it stands in sharp contrast with what Ziad Sahab and Makram abul-Hassan said about the very same topic -while discussing it in the context of the 1932 Congress of Arabic Music in Cairo.
I'm no professional musician, but listening to other people's account on the topic, like that of Saadallah Agha al-Qal'a, and the opinions I read in Johnny Farraj and Sami Abu Shumays' book "Inside Arabic Music: Arabic Maqam Performance and Theory in the 20th Century", it seems like his opinion is a bit unorthodox? As if the Arab musicians have moved along?

Thank you for your comment! I do not believe that mister Baalbaki fully developed his idea on the matter, due to the time constraint. As for what Ziyad Sahhab and Makram Aboul Hosn presented on the matter, I do not believe it stands in sharp contradiction with what Mr. Baalbaki presented, as they all believe that the matter of notation, in the western sense of the term and the practice, does not suffice to bring out the intrinsic properties of our so called Arabic Music. Thank you for the references as well, I will be sure to provide you with further information as soon as I am more acquainted with the work,. Cheers

@@ZagharidPod thanks Nadim for the clarification.
I am currently watching your interview with Sary and Ayad Khalifa, and the same topic came up again.
I can see the nuances all of you are raising, and it's clearer now that there's no single dominating opinion on the matter, even if some hold stronger positions than others.
