this song transcends everything, everyone and speaks of humanity across time and space until blue matter collapses ultimately into no-time, no-space, no-life.
One of Paul's best covers. Influenced by Alex and not to be blunt but Paul has surpassed Alex. Left of the Dial, Things, Last Glimmer, Alex Chilton, Answering Machine, Swinging Party, Unsatisfied, Hold my Life, Talent Show and dozens more.
It's almost but not quite as extreme as listening to Shane MacGowan. Shane's always drunk. Gave the audio cassette of Shit, Shower and Shave away many, many years ago because of the bad recording quality. While I don't regret that, come to find if the sound is even passable it's OK with early 'Mats. I like this.
Eric M Heard the Searchers' version? That was the first one I heard. Big Star's was third - and there's was the original! But you'd have to go a long way to heard a shit version of it. Almost as if the song itself won't let you bugger it up.
Eric M They'd been off the recording thing for a while and then they did this pair of albumss - _The Searchers_ ... and _Play For Today_. Line-up on both albums: Mike Pender - gtr, vox John McNally - gtr, vox Frank Allen - bs, vox Billy Adamson - drms Their version of 'September Gurls' is on the second of those. I wore that track on the vinyl copy out. Really, a rather under-rated band, I always thought. Two other bloody awesome songs they did very good versions of on that LP, too: _Radio Romance_ _Everything But A Heartbeat_ Their longest-lasting line-up - and only two LPs ... but they were rather good ones!
The Replacements were a great cover band. I think it was because they loved music so much.
Well, at one point they hated music. But Paul did predict that one day he wouldn't, so looks like that day came.
tommy's raw backup vocals on the chorus are perfect. america's truest rock band.
this song transcends everything, everyone and speaks of humanity across time and space until blue matter collapses ultimately into no-time, no-space, no-life.
Beautiful. Cheers
Love pauls voice in this.
The raucous replacements doing justice to this polished gem
I love Paul and Tommy's shot to the obviously underwhelmed crowd at the end...
I'd complain about it but if it weren't for the Replacements, I wouldn't know about Big Star.
Great cover
Holy Shit
Dare, I say Westerberg owns it?
bocphet yeah if he actually knew the fuckjn lyrics.
Dare I say the drums aren't very good on this? The tempo is all over the place.
@@mikewalsh7318 wouldnt be surprised, they were drunk a lot of the time
@@mikewalsh7318 The Placemats were either a train wreck or on fire during a concert. Gotta love 'em.
If it wasn’t sloppy then it wasn’t the Replacements. I’m just glad they got them playing this song down on tape.
December boys got it bad....so true....
Great cover, man! haha i love that.
they did like no it other
bell, Chilton and Paul well all laugh one day
appreciate it
Achin' to Bleed for a bunch of nimrods.

Definitely I agree
Ironic that one of the songs that showcases Paul’s superior songwriting is Alex Chilton.
the mats. fuck - what have we done?
What was he singing?? Too bad he couldn’t remember the words!
Trustworthy ,fully flawed hart of Rock and Roll punk band. Aching to bleed for a bunch of nimrods
Awesome cover and they didn't fuck up😂
obviously you don't know much about the mats
Good song but bad vocals and messed up guitar and drums... especially at the end. It sounds like they were drunk when they played this lol.
They were almost always drunk, weren't they?! ;)
Damn straight and weren't most of us? Getting blasted was a totally rational response to the lunacy of the Reagan era.

Paul was never a crooner...this is about as good as it got. Plus, they grew tired quickly on the Petty tour.
That's them & it sounds great!
Squire version is so much better......sorry......so is the Bangles cover
I prefer the Bangles version by far.
Tara McSparron You should hear Big Star's version....
But the Bangles' version was kinda nice...
I'm not sure there is bad cover of this song. That's how good it is.
Eric M Heard the Searchers' version?

I didn't know of the Searchers' cover. Thanks. I'll check it out.

Sloppy AND stupid at the same time!
