I wonder to what extent mafuyu's mom is aware of the truth of what is happening. She is certainly a selfish monster who is willfully ignorant of mafuyu's pain to some degree, but you can see her thought processes a bit last chapter and how she may think (with some evidence) that this is all the fault of n25's bad influence. She doesn't see (or value) all the pain mafuyu was in, or how mafuyu has real friends for the first time in her life, she just sees that mafuyu is hiding things, n25 is involved, now she's skipping school and dropping her grades. In her mind everything was going fine until recently. She would have little way of figuring out that this is all her fault, and even if it was told to her directly she would probably just deflect or think that no one else must 'really understand' whats going on. Of course, there's a couple things that don't exactly line up, mostly from her conversation with kanade. she should know n25 has been together for two years before now, so her timeline doesn't really check out, but i think she's choosing to ignore that in favor of a better narrative for her. Or maybe kanade's declaration of war was enough for her to think they're out to make her mad now and all bets are off. the other thing that doesn't quite line up with her version of events is kanade saying mafuyu wanted to disappear. she was briefly shocked, and then collected herself and said basically 'she'll be ok when she becomes a doctor.' It's difficult to know how she would internally justify being that callous over such a serious thing as that, but people like this don't always operate logically. I personally believe she thinks she cares about Mafuyu and she's an "ends justify the means" type, i.e. any amount of suffering mafuyu is going through is justified because she needs to get into a good school and by being a bit harsh now I am just preparing her for the real world. I would put money on this being generational trauma she experienced (like another comment said), where these expectations were placed on her and now she values results over emotional wellbeing and thinks that is how a good parent should be, and feels threatened by any attempt mafuyu makes to break away, because it reminds her of herself and how she could not. granted i could be projecting my own parents onto her for some of that but thats the vibe i get. especially since japanese schools are very score-focused, and the workforce/adult social world is extremely hierarchical, so it's important you place highly/go to a good school/etc so you're seen as valuable and successful. Regardless of what she may think, though, her actions tell me she doesn't actually care about mafuyu at all. she cares about what mafuyu is to her-- a daughter, a symbol of her own success in a way. She cares about the idea of having a loving, obedient child, even if mafuyu's own feelings are an obstacle to that. she cares about the control she can leverage over mafuyu to feel better about her own internalized powerlessness. it's pure selfishness disguised as love, from someone who doesn't know what love is. she is disconnected from reality to the degree that it nearly killed her own daughter. no child should ever, ever have to grow up with a parent like that.
thinking abt how mom asahina's concerns are portrayed in the context of the japanese life plan, abt how exams and schooling literally do determine your future to an extremely strong extent, how she's talking abt how failing exams means that you don't get to "achieve your dreams" or career aspirations or whatever + the (slowly phasing out but still present) push of new mothers out of the educated workforce after they have kids... makes me wonder if mom asahina's concerned abt mafuyu following the same life path as her. i don't know if an employed parent has this much time or investment to personally call teachers during off hours and the like. does not excuse her behavior in the slightest, i've had chills every time she comes on screen, but ma'am you need to be less insecure about your life maybe. just a little

The thing that gets me is that in that event where Kanade and Mafuyu’s mom met, they both agreed that they weren’t gonna tell Mafuyu that they met. Kanade avoided telling her because she didn’t want Mafuyu to worry further, her mom said she wouldn’t do it because it would “interfere with her studies”. Fast forward to this point, and Mafuyu’s mom never upholds her part of the deal, as soon as it’s convenient for her she will break it and use it to her advantage, whereas Kanade fully kept her word and said nothing about that meetup. One person cares about Mafuyu herself and her well being, the other only cares about what her grades and studies will look like so she can show her daughter off like a trophy. Mafuyu’s mother is such a gross and manipulative human being, it’s incredible how many little subtleties you can pick up on in her behavior

Or maybe kanade's declaration of war was enough for her to think they're out to make her mad now and all bets are off. the other thing that doesn't quite line up with her version of events is kanade saying mafuyu wanted to disappear. she was briefly shocked, and then collected herself and said basically 'she'll be ok when she becomes a doctor.' It's difficult to know how she would internally justify being that callous over such a serious thing as that, but people like this don't always operate logically.
I personally believe she thinks she cares about Mafuyu and she's an "ends justify the means" type, i.e. any amount of suffering mafuyu is going through is justified because she needs to get into a good school and by being a bit harsh now I am just preparing her for the real world. I would put money on this being generational trauma she experienced (like another comment said), where these expectations were placed on her and now she values results over emotional wellbeing and thinks that is how a good parent should be, and feels threatened by any attempt mafuyu makes to break away, because it reminds her of herself and how she could not. granted i could be projecting my own parents onto her for some of that but thats the vibe i get. especially since japanese schools are very score-focused, and the workforce/adult social world is extremely hierarchical, so it's important you place highly/go to a good school/etc so you're seen as valuable and successful.
Regardless of what she may think, though, her actions tell me she doesn't actually care about mafuyu at all. she cares about what mafuyu is to her-- a daughter, a symbol of her own success in a way. She cares about the idea of having a loving, obedient child, even if mafuyu's own feelings are an obstacle to that. she cares about the control she can leverage over mafuyu to feel better about her own internalized powerlessness. it's pure selfishness disguised as love, from someone who doesn't know what love is. she is disconnected from reality to the degree that it nearly killed her own daughter. no child should ever, ever have to grow up with a parent like that.

The thing that gets me is that in that event where Kanade and Mafuyu’s mom met, they both agreed that they weren’t gonna tell Mafuyu that they met. Kanade avoided telling her because she didn’t want Mafuyu to worry further, her mom said she wouldn’t do it because it would “interfere with her studies”.
Fast forward to this point, and Mafuyu’s mom never upholds her part of the deal, as soon as it’s convenient for her she will break it and use it to her advantage, whereas Kanade fully kept her word and said nothing about that meetup. One person cares about Mafuyu herself and her well being, the other only cares about what her grades and studies will look like so she can show her daughter off like a trophy. Mafuyu’s mother is such a gross and manipulative human being, it’s incredible how many little subtleties you can pick up on in her behavior
