Sorry, this is gonna be a long comment, this song means soooo much to me. 1. The majority of this song is Tyler talking to God, and as a Christian I totally love this interpretation (also, this is nowhere near a new topic they cover). Support for this: In the video, he is mostly seen looking up when he says "And I'll be holding on to you" in the chorus, which I love as we need to rely on Him in our lives. Also, "Entertain my faith" in the bridge (self-explanatory). Also, the other part of the chorus (or maybe its considered pre-chorus): "You are surrounding all my surroundings Sounding down the mountain range of my left-side brain You are surrounding all my surroundings Twisting the kaleidoscope behind both of my eyes" Its like how He is always with us, is always influencing us, and can totally change how we see things (like the kaleidoscope). Just my interpretation, as Twenty-One Pilots is known for leaving room for sooooo many interpretations to get what we need out of the song. 2. This more of a personal interpretation of it, but the second verse to me is clearly talking about the fight against taking yourself out, and taking control of your mind (which also references verse 1). "Remember the moment you know exactly where you're going 'Cause the next moment, before you know it Time is slowing and it's frozen still And the window sill looks really nice, right?" The window sill is where "you're" going to, which is where you'd jump off, and when you're fighting this, everything does seems to slow. I feel like the next line confirms this: "You think twice about your life, it probably happens at night, right?" And, similar to how Tyler feels, the night does, for some reason, seem so much worse than any other time. Then the rest of the verse is that fight of taking control of yourself and tearing yourself away from the window. I've been through the exact scenario he describes in this verse, so this song is almost like my rebellion song against the dark stuff in my head and means so much to me. 3. (this is someone else's interpretation I liked) The skeleton paint people in the video are kind of like your problems that you're dealing with, (supported by the scene with the people pulling on the rope around Tyler), but the same paint that appears on Tyler later is like a message saying that your problems are apart of you to a degree and makes who you are, even the absolutely terrible ones. 4. This is more of an interesting design thing, but the weird speed contrast in the video uses some technique where they capture all the visuals, speed it up for the video, then record the song. So, when they were doing the visuals, they were performing the song at like half-speed or something so when it would be sped up, it would match the actual song. Sorry again for the long comment. Love your reactions, cant wait for more TOP!!!
I posted this elsewhere, but I feel it's necessary to add this quote from Tyler here, as well as my interpretation. I apply a universal meaning to words like faith. When Tyler performed this song for Sirius XM th-cam.com/video/dB-8RMUrzPA/w-d-xo.html, he added some insightful comments, as follows: >I'm an advocate for journaling. A lot of artists and song writers talk about how when they write songs it's like you're reading their journal. And though I get what they mean by that, I promise you it's not exactly like that. >If you read my journal it's a lot of nonsense, and there's no structure. And as I was preparing for this set today, I remembered an old journal entry that I wrote a long time ago. And I rarely ever crack open old journals, it's almost forbidden. >But I was looking at some old entries to remember where I was coming from, what kind of mind space I was in, and in 2010 there's this one journal entry I talked about 'I don't know if I'm supposed to be doing this music thing, its not really working now, there's really no light at the end of the tunnel. The people around me are saying their time is running out, and they wanted to move on to other things. And I started to wonder if my dream was not supposed to happen.' So you can read through the journal entry as I'm trying to figure out who I am and what I'm supposed to be doing. At the very end of it I write, 'I started working on a new song and right now the title is called Entertain My Faith. I'm excited about it. So I'm going to continue working on new music'. It turned into this song Holding On To You. >So it's really cool to watch where I was when I wrote this song, and what this song has become now today, for not just me but for other people." Listening to Tyler talk about his mind space when his former band mates were losing faith in the project, I interpret this song to be about making music, song writing and the belief you need to have in yourself when even your own mind is struggling to believe in yourself and your ability to succeed in music. Before Josh ever joined the band, Tyler and Josh connected. They talked all night about their music dreams and ambitions. They shared a mindset that has always been evident. Josh supports Tyler. He believes in their abilities, and keeps Tyler safe from his dark thoughts. It was this kind of connection, this self belief/TOP -project belief that Tyler was asking for when he cries out "Entertain my faith". This song is about the music, and the struggle to create when everything, and everyone (including the yet to be named Blurryface) is holding you back. Viewed from this perspective, I find the song (and the MV showing his thoughts holding his mind in a noose) amazingly powerful. Thank you to Tyler's words for leading me towards this interpretation. Also Tyler has spoken about music being an entity with it's own morals. The music decides where it wants to go. It's magical thinking for sure, and supports my interpretation of how Tyler embodies the music in his lyrics.
Oh I’m so glad you’ve worked it out! HOTY has so many great lyrics in it, I always forget somehow they are all in one song. Another great reaction. Everyone is listing great songs for you, my choice would be Goner, Live at Fox theatre. 🙃
Happy to see you got the reactions sorted..hope others check out the ones that posted late.. this song is amazing live at fox theater! A must see at some point ..great reaction again!
every video of your first TOP reaction i watch there’s this thought in the back of my mind “he has no idea every of their song sounds x10 better live”. When you’re done with MVs you should DEFINITELY check their live performances, you will be impressed. I would highly suggest seeing Holding Onto You live at Fox Theatre (and every other song from that concert)
Yes, he was talking about all music and how people need to use their talent to spread messages not just say words lean with it rock with it was a big song in the early 2000s but it meant nothing. I’m really enjoying your twenty one pilots reviews. Went to the concert last night was 20 feet from Tyler. It was awesome. I highly recommend you go to the show.
Please react to Lana Del Rey, I think you would really enjoy her music. Her lyricism reminds me of Tyler's even if the topics they discuss tend to be different.
