@ashley richards you know, I've always wondered if he actually owned his house, or had roomies, or lived with his parents, or what. I don't think it's ever been said, at least not in the year or so that I've been watching. If it is his parent's horse, then they're pretty cool for letting him take over the garage lol

as a electrician that also studied sound engineering and did live audio, this was so funny because I've been there so many times in so many times. Once a flicking street light outside made me loose half a day switching equipment inside. BTW the nerd reason is ground loops, but getting to the root of those problems is better left to people with better paygrades and most of the time the solution is new wiring of the whole place. For dynamic mics, cloudlifters are the best easy solution to basically put down the noise floor, and nowadays 32bit interfaces also make the process easier to bury those noises

I'd try connecting a price of wire from the housing of the light to a stake driven into soil. NOT to the wiring just the metal housing on the outside. If it's not metal then have someone who is knowledgeable to add better grounding to the circuit. I had the issue with a diy solution to a diffused stage light for streaming. I had it again with a printer power cable that was touching my XLR out of my mic. If that solution doesn't solve the issue you can either have it rewired or find a better way to shield your recording equipment. If it's ac powered equipment try a power conditioner if it battery then just finding a way to shield equipment might work.

I used to work for a company that ran sound for bands. One church carnival, we had a terrible buzzing issue. We tried to track it down for like 3 hours. Replaced all XLR cables, all mics. All stage monitors…. Turned out. The main power supply they loaned us from the church, had a popcorn maker sharing the outlet. That popcorn maker was somehow causing the buzz… 🤦🏻‍♂️

Might be a good idea to check if your garage panel is properly bonded to ground. I have encountered rf noise because of improper bonding many times. The problem could even be in your light as some people do not properly wire outdoor lights to ground. If ground and neutral are together led lights tend to make noise as well

I was a live audio guy for years, so this is up my alley. 9 times out of 10, a buzz or whine in an audio feed is either a bad ground or interference from a light.
LEDs use ballasts to power them and rapidly pulse on and off using Power Width Modulation, or PWM. The PWM controls how many flickers per second the LED will have, and that flicker control (aka hertz) creates an electrical signal that interferes with radio equipment.
Same reason AM radio goes insane during a thunderstorm or under high voltage powerlines. The sheer amount of electrical signal is overpowering.

It's not embarrassing that it took you so long to find this! So many people run into issues with interference caused by lights, and specifically it's cheaper LED lights that cause this problem. They're really electrically noisy and can put out a MASSIVE amount of interference to audio gear, walkie talkies, and radios. It takes professional engineers hours to track this kind of stuff down sometimes!

The problem with the kind of cables most people use (as opposed to pro cables) is they have a thin core and poor (if any shielding) so effectively act like an antenna and will pick up all kinds of junk - especially if something has poor grounding. A very simple solution that works most of the time is to use a ferrite choke. They are very cheap and you can get snap on ones that just clip over the cable or rings that you just loop the cable through.

  • @Kelzatron-1

In the Air Force I worked on Avionics on C-130 cargo aircraft. In the shop you could see the 60 hertz from electrical outlets when the sensitivity was turned up on oscilloscopes. The closer you got the better you could see it. Unshielded and or ungrounded shielded wires would pick up all kinds of electrical noise. We also maintained cords for for connecting headsets as well. Sizes ranged from 8 ft to 100 ft. The longer ones were sometimes used to connect people outside the aircraft to people inside, for ground maintenance and engine startups. There were occasionally times when people had these long ones rolled up into a loop and they would pick up AM radio stations.

I ran into a similar but what felt like even more bizarre scenario (to me) years ago. I was watching stuff on my laptop in a library with corded earbuds. At some point I noticed I could hear people talking in the background so I’m going crazy trying to locate this tab that’s playing the audio. Eventually I get to the point there is not a single program open on my computer literally no conceivable place this audio could be coming from. Leading to research where I eventually figure out through some perfect storm I had ended up picking up a local radio station localized entirely within my earbuds despite their obvious lack of a radio receiver or true antenna. There was definitely a moment where I considered the possibility of spontaneously developed schizophrenia 😂

Having worked with live audio and stage production for many years, it sounds like a shielding or grounding issue. Most 3.5mm "extension" cables are designed to extend headphones and devices on the OUTPUT side of the audio chain. Your microphone is on the INPUT side of the audio chain. Be sure the cable has the proper shielding for the purpose. Most of the "headphone" extension cables are designed with a common and 2 hot (left and right) wires. That common wire is not a proper, braided shield needed for a microphone. Also, as alluded to in a prior comment, double check the neutral and ground connection on the outdoor light, to the breaker panel and if the garage breaker panel is actually a sub panel check ITS connections to the main. If you actually have a floating neutral it could be a very dangerous (possibly lethal) situation.

It's static. Some electrical boxes, or electricity in general creates a static energy around it. Your light is probably creating a static electricity or a frequency. So, you are using what is called an unbalanced setup. By using a mic that doesn’t go through an interface or preamp, and uses a mono plug, you’re picking up a hum called a ground loop.
If you used an interface that had a balanced setup, where you would need a balanced microphone which uses what looks like a stereo or XLR cable even though it’s just one channel. The extra channel helps cancel out any noise. It would have caught this hmm from the light. Also, using a power conditioner on a dedicated circuit would help. Awesome vids, as always.
