How to express what's happening right now in Spanish

  • Learn Spanish Tenses: Actions that are happening currently. In this video, I will teach you to how to express actions that are happening at the time you are speaking. You will learn that the present simple in Spanish is not used to express an action that is happening at the moment you are speaking. Instead, you will need a combination of verbs: the verb “to be” -- “estar”, and your actual action. Por ejemplo, “I am running” -- “estoy corriendo”, “I am cooking” -- “estoy cocinando”, “I am thinking” -- “estoy pensando”. I am doing all those things while saying I am doing all those things. You will learn how to build this tense. In fact, it is a combination of Spanish verbs and it is usually called the Spanish gerund, gerundio. You will soon see that this Spanish verb combination tense is simpler than you think. Spanish verbs always end with either “ar”, “er”, or “ir”. These are the three conjugations. They are always referred to as first conjugation -- “primera conjugación”, “ar”; second conjugation -- “segunda conjugación”, “er”; third conjugation -- “tercera conjugación”, “ir”. Place the first conjugation in one jar. Take the second and third conjugations and place them together in another jar. Why? Well because the second and third are BFFs, and do not like the first conjugation because the first conjugation in Spanish is a snob. In fact, they hang out with different people: "ar" hangs out with “ando”. The others, “er” and “ir” go out with “iendo”. Do you want to know where, how, and why the verbs that end with “ar”, “er”,
“ir” in Spanish hang out with “ando” and “iendo”? Then watch this lesson!

Nosotros en italiano también lo llamamos "gerundio" y es muy similar:
    camminare (caminar) = camminando
    vedere (ver) = vedendo
    dormire (dormir) = dormendo

I love Spanish because of how intrinsically transparent the language is formatted. In English, you can be vague and avoid telling details by saying “my friend” but in Spanish because of the way the language is structured, you tell more details about the person. “Mi amigo” is my guy friend. Same with this video about present tense.

Many thanks once again Ana for all your hard work and the humanity that you inject into your lessons. At the close of one of your videos that I watched yesterday you said: Gracias por ver mi video. In English, as I'm very sure that you'll already know, we could use the phrase 'thank you for watching my video' making use of the gerund. Would it then be proper in Spanish to say: Gracias, por viendo mi video? And if so, what would determine your choice of phrase to use? Muchas gracias una vez más.
    John Roberts. 😊
