I have been blessed to have had one housekeep/childminder for 24 years until she passed. My son gave the eulogy at her funeral in fluent Shona, her language that she taught him from birth. She was a single mother of three, my go-to person, and an extra grandparent to my children. I never had to instruct her on cleaning my home, never missed any of my possessions, and trusted her more than my relatives to care for my children. I too was a single parent but she made it so much easier. It has been 10 years since we lost her but we still miss her so much even though my children are adults with children of their own.
I always hear those stories of househelps staying in one household for decades while mine can't last 3 months till i stopped hiring. Whats the secret! .
@@justinamusyoka4986 I really think I was just trully blessed because even my friends were always trying to poach her. Lovely stuff mommy , I once’s checked my house help bag was to dismiss that morning.I sent her to the market to buy stuff for me before telling her am dismissing her ,checked her bag while she was out found my stuff and kids in her bag she had taken, took them out and pretended like I didn’t know.when she came back I broke the news to her told her the reason, paid her and dismissed her.
I had strange dreams about a previous househelp, and my hubby used to tell me he suspects that the househelp was a nightrunner, yet i had not told him about the dreams... I prayed and still had those funny dreams.... that was it, out woman, out
I also don't check bags or suitcases belonging to househelps during dismissal. Yes anything stolen can be replaced, as long as you leave me and mine in peace.
I have learnt to check their bags on arrival and departure. Their's this one who had a knife in her bag. Another with more than 10 phones in the bag, kumbe she used to steal in every house she worked. Another one had ARVs..... It's not like I discriminate HIV positive people but having small kids I wasn't comfortable. Plus I don't have money to replace everything they steal. So I will always check. That's me
I hire househelps calmly,I take time to teach them what I need to be done, then I treat them like I would like to be treated if I was one, ofcourse after sometime they think am too good not to be taken advantage of;I watch them calmly and calmly from nowhere I tell someone, thank you for your work, here are your dues,go home, then I live their consciousness to sanitize them,Non of the househelps knows my yelling or I would look when sad.

I think if you honestly feel that you must check the bag upon departure (like if it was a case of theft or impropriety), do it as they are packing, it's less invasive. Also and this is just me, when I can, I always take her to the nearest matatu stage, like if you live far from the road, it's fair and to avoid the drama/gossip outside with other house helps or watchmen who she may have known during her stay.
We don't check bags. But there was this helper that we dismissed coz of theft.that one we had to check the bags. Truly we found things she had stolen that day.
