Another great album (unbelievably) celebrating its 40th anniversary this year - the Goliath that is Frankie Goes To Hollywood / Welcome To The Pleasuredome An album that dominated 1984 - tell us what you think?
Great? WTTP has at most a handful of good songs; the rest is desperate filler just as much as was the practice in the 50s and 60s for pop acts - like Gerry and the Pacemakers, appropriately. I can't imagine even Holly Johnson regards this LP as great.
@@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx it’s ok not to like it. we addressed the number of original songs in the episode - the album was a technological marvel. It sounds phenomenal still to this day and personally think it contains some really great songs. Frankie Says Relax. Thanks for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
Relax,Two Tribes,The Power of Love,Welcome to the Pleasure Dome and Rage Hard really were fantastic Songs.👏 Two Tribes is my favourite though, mainly due to the Bassline. 😎
I was 15 years old when this came out. Still remember our music teacher discussing Relax and the Mike Read/BBC ban in class the day after it happened. He promptly played the track and we all decided innuendos and meanings aside, it was a banging record and would go straight to #1. Love the Pleasuredome album. Totally unique sound and production. One of those albums that whisks me back to a specific time: winter 84/85 for me in my room wearing out the vinyl whilst hammering Manic Miner and Chuckie Egg on my Spectrum 48k. Still got my original vinyl copy too which still get's a regular airing.
This was a landmark album and the album version of the title track is still epic!! Great video guys, glad to know someone out besides me loved the _Liverpool_ album! 💯
Still one of my favorite albums that I listen to from start to finish❤❤❤. Saw them live for this I was 14 incredible night❤❤. And if course let's not forget their cameo in Body Double❤
I remember buying Echo and The Bunnymen's Ocean Rain, U2's The Unforgettable Fire and Frankie's Pleasuredome when I was 15 and they all came out a few months of each other.Amazing year
I was 13 when this album came out and was the first album to make me notice Basslines and contains my favourite 12 inch of all time! and has been in my playlist ever since! Peak Trevor Horn production for me!
This came across my X feed. Thanks for continuing to fly the Frankie flag forty years on and for plugging the book. Any time you would like to discuss the fallacy that Mike Read was responsible for the success of the band I would be happy to oblige. The BBC "withdrew it from the playlist" when it was at number two in the charts. Love and peace. Nice one - Nasher
@@fonefilms Hi Nasher. Thanks for comments and for watching Electronic Cafe. We’d love to - I have already sent you a couple of messages (and I have your email from when you sent me the book). We’d love to have a chat. We’re massive Frankie fans. Thanks. MW
Thanks andy & mark for this great review of FGTH’s classic welcome to the pleasure dome lp. I bought the double picture disc lp when I was 15 from the HMV megastore in bond street back in 1984. Still have it to this day. Great album 😊
What a masterpiece album, i love your channel, one big wish that you got a little deeper into the albums, so the videos would be longer, thank you for a great idea.
Thanks for your kind words and comments. We do have deeper episodes and interviews but these “celebrate” episodes are just short episodes celebrating anniversaries of phenomenal records. Much appreciated. MW
Nice work as always lads. I bought the gatefold LP back in '84, here in Auckland, where of course Paul Rutherford lives now with his partner Perry on Waiheke Island. Can't say I've seen him around town? 🤔 Anyway, keep up the excellent work that you do here team. Regards, Mark... 😌🇳🇿 (I have on CD now)
Wow 40 years eh & have to admit i liked the singles at the time but listening now they all are 1000 times better than i remember which is a testament to Trevor Horn's Production & i would love to say the bands playing but it seems Horn now has said they played on very little on the finished 4 sides which is a shame... The full length title track is up there with the greatest 1980s songs listening back.
Always thought it odd that with so much electronics... none of the Frankies played keyboards? Fair play though, the lads wrote some good tunes. My mate bought this in 84... I was into Depeche, OMD and Ultravox.
Yup the amazing ZTT team created all the sparkle in their sound, we were also into DM, OMD and Ultravox, great bands my friend thank you for watching the Electronic Cafe-Andy
I loved that album and the title track (I think) was the best track. My preference would have been if they'd stuck to original music perhaps using the 10 minute Mix 2 version of Ballad of 32 instead of the shorter version and adding Disneyland which was later released on a compilation album.
This album makes more sense when you accept it for what it is, a “Prog Rock” album. It was produced and engineered by a bunch of old Progsters who one day happened across a young sex-funk band. Like most prog double albums it’s stuffed with odd bits and bobs which seem at odds with the more tightly packaged pop albums of 1984 and that’s what makes it so unique.
@@electroniccafemusic the technology helped, but the same technology was also used on three aborted attempts to create Relax :). The difference was TCH wasn’t under a label deadline so he did it until it was right. WTTP (single) took 3 months to record (unheard of back then). So for all the Fairlights, Synclaviers, Jupiter 8’s, the human element is what made the album great Horn, Lipson, Jeczalik, Dudley, Richards, Jardim.. a complete dream team of talent and the Frankie’s themselves for the actual music / songs :)
At the time, I thought they were the most over-hyped band since the Pistols, and wasn't a fan. Even so, they had a sensational 12 months, and nostalgia-wise this album have stood test of time.
Looking back, the singles were great but I actually think the stuff they did later (Rage Hard for example) were better in my opinion. But it's certainly an album everyone should listen to at least once.
It’s fine not to like it, our musical pallets are all different. Not sure reviews were terrible though. Thanks for sharing and for watching Electronic Cafe. MW
