@Lain well what do you think about gon's transformation? Wouldn't you say that's an unusual route for a shonen to go with it's protagonist? Or how for most of the journey they're looking for Gon's father only to find out he's a deadbeat dad and not that likable? Also, the fact that Killua is literally a killer with a family of assassins but no one seems to have any moral qualms with this amongst the main cast. It seems to show that the morality of the main cast isn't purely good or evil. Sure, there are are lot of things in hxh that are typical but it deviates in many ways too.
I think the Chimera Ant Arc is like what Togashi wanted to do with Yu Yu Hakusho's Three Kings Arc but wasn't allowed to because YYH was too popular to have its main characters be deconstructed but then over a decade later Togashi somehow convinced his editors to let him do this
HxH in general feels like what Togashi wanted to do with Yu Yu Hakusho, since his editors kept pushing him to make a more typical shonen while he was making YYH in it's entirety. But yeah, the Chimera Ant arc is definitely the biggest example of that. I could totally have seen Togashi making it into what the Chimera Ant arc would've been, instead of just another fighting tournament that wasn't as good as the first one.
It's been so long since I watched Yu Yu Hakusho (back when it was on toonami) I actually had no idea that it and HxH were made by the same guy so hearing this stuff is fascinating.
@@Wolf_ManJack But Killua could have done it without any cost as he did for Gon. If anything I think there isn't any obvious plot hole simply because, being everything on Killua, at the time he was more concerned about Gon's mental state than any super-threat that could have been dealt of with more conventional measures - as it did in fact happen.
@@Wolf_ManJack Shit, it's been a minute since I watched that part. The way I remember it the wish was cost-free because Killua is the only one that shows any form of love to Nanika, but I'm not sure if it being "just" a healing act was part of the reason.
@@Wolf_ManJack Eh, I don't really care about the whole gender thing. I just find it a little cringy whenever I see someone going "Omg HxH soooo progressive!!1" when in reality is just that Japan always liked to play with genders all the way back since the Kabuki theatre. Anyway, I really like how the Election arc taps into horror. The butler's death was by and large the most horrifying thing I've ever seen in a shonen and the whole Nanika affair was pretty much some Junji Ito shit. The blending of themes is something HxH does really well.
@@Wolf_ManJack Unfortunately no, I haven't read anything HxH related, but I plan to get all the tanks and read everything from the start sooner or later. However I know some of the major events that happened in the current arc, like a long-awaited encounter and its results. Btw I don't think there's any prejudice coming from the Zoldycks as far as Alluka's gender is concerned since they're totally fine Kalluto, who is exactly in her same condition - if that's what you were going for. I think they segregated her simply because they couldn't bother dealing with Nanika, which is objectively really dangerous, even for them. Killua just happened to be the closest to her in terms of age and because of his innocence he ended being the one who bonded with her the most out of all the family members. The curse itself is probably just too unstable and out of their comfort zone to grant Alluka - who doesn't even have any control over it - the right to be the heir.
@@Wolf_ManJack Oh, that's also where the idea for Gwyndolyn must have come from since it checks pretty much every mark you described. Btw, I forgot to mention it earlier but, yes, Palm becomes outrageously hot after the mutation.

7:30 I listen to Pats analogy and I'm astonished just how *accurate* it is. I honestly understand who is suppose to be in HxH in that desciption. 21:00 About that "Monkey Paw" thing as Pat put it. It was later in the Manga explained that it most likely wouldn't finish off the Chimera Ants (Maybe one and not from a distance). Still I recommend you guys check out the ongoing manga. You mentioned Game of Thrones and Jojo, the current arc is pretty much Game of Thrones with JoJo.
The problem with using Nanika for the Chimera Ants is that to make that wish the next request would be something no one would be able to accomplish and probably a massive amount of people will die in relative quality to the chimera ants... meaning perhaps a large population of the Earth.
There was literally no need to use Nanika at all. The end of the arc is supposed to show that humanity's darkness was more than enough to deal with them. The Ants never stood a damn chance, worst outcome was the entirety of NGL would be nuked with rose bombs. Kill civilians, but since when has government cared? It'd be a "necessary sacrifice for the safety of mankind." Meruem recognizes too late just how evil humans can be.
projectcapsule I can understand not having the time. But the whole “this sounds awful” attitude throughout the HxH podcast segments frustrated the hell out of me. But Pat sandbagged him every time so that made up for it. Like Woolie said though, he’ll never watch it unless Eyepatch Wolf is with him. So pretty much never lol.
@@projectcapsule The most aggravating thing is that he _knows_ how Eyepatch Wolf's tastes are totally in line with his. Ok, sure, maybe his HxH video wasn't enough to convince him, but then he put out Why You Should Watch Hajime no Ippo, WYSW JoJo, WYSW Berserk and so on, which are almost 1:1 his own favorite anime/manga. That alone should have made him at least reconsider his idea to totally sandbag HxH without any thought. @@SonicMegaKing I disagree and agree. The begining it's freaking solid and nothing to be ashamed off, it really did have a more emotional begining that at the time separate it from the rest, good stuff. I don't think the follow up to that is trash but it's where the series starts to show it's problems. When it comes to "but you don't understand, but later on tho" when someone shit talks a thing you like, Hunter x Hunter stands above and beyond as the absolute reigning champion example. Most of the best parts of the story happen around the middle and the end, which isn't a bad thing because at least you have a good payoff to look forward to. But even as someone who loves HxH to death and will shout it to the heavens as his absolute favorite anime, there's a reason I don't tend to rewatch the series from the Hunter Exams arc. It's not a bad arc, but compared to the rest of it, it feels so standard, and it's such a fucking shame that it's the arc that many people drop off of.
My problem with HxH is tone. It's like, on one side super weeb trashy fun and on the other ultra dark horror, they don't mash. For example you have a toddler having her brain eaten like pat said but at the same time you have a metalhead lion-human-ant hybrid surfer dude that fights using a surf board.
I bet Woolie gonna love the show if *ONLY* he can come out of his N4rD0's cocoon at least once and give it a chance. Btw, Togashi was a huge fanboy of Akira Toriyama and he simply respected him.
Gon's character is not finished though. Even if he's not in the current arc, he'll probably be back for the story about Gyro, the villain briefly introduced in Chimera Ant, who went to Meteor City.

To make a similar use of dragon ball z analogies. For Gon's transformation and why you really shouldn't use it so lightly: Imagine if the first time Goku went super saiyan, it was legendary super saiyan instead. He literally just becomes Broly, goes berserk and tries to kill everything around him, but especially the one guy who's *really* pissed him off, and also he's on a time limit before he will just drop dead. And also he is so powerful that punching somebody at 100% makes your own arm blow off because your body simply cannot cope with the amount of power you're outputting even after transforming itself.
Eh, I don't think any DB comparison would work. It's Gon's lowest point in his life, that's why it's inappropriate to use it anywhere besides that one specific context. A somewhat better comparison would be like having a game with Griffith and using his Phemto form as a power up.
@@soarel325 I don't know, as an event I think it's closer to Griffith's. For the purpose of a game power up I think Gon's and Griffith's are more contextually inappropriate, but maybe yes, mechanically it's more similar to Guts'.
Well, to be fair, if they had used the wish thing to kill all the ants, the only way to guarantee that the entire human race didn’t explode upon the next wish being made, since that is one monumental wish, and would require a massive price to be paid, the only way to guarantee that doesn’t happen, is to destroy the wish granter. And there is no confirmation if that is even possible, or if it is, if something even worse might happen, which is entirely possible.
I saw an image of the work schedule of a mangaka some time ago, and I'm not surprised his room looks the way it does. They only get like 3 hours of free time in a week.
Meanwhile were in the sick hiatus hell that is SUCCESSION WAR. This is like the poor man's Guts waiting to get off the boat to the Dark Continent, and having JUST. ENOUGH. For us to care about these literal who princes and Kurapika because god dangit Togashi
In the Chimera Ant arc the art turned to scribbles because togashi was so sick. In the current succession war arc art is lucky to be included in the chapters at all and the "manga" has become more of a serialized novel.
The Chimera Ant arc was just insanity in pretty much every good way possible. That last episode of it made me feel, which is fucking hard to do with me. I also agree that the 'The Biggest You didn't win.' is fucking crazy and the sheer insanity in how it does so truly impressed me. Because it did so in the most baffling way, but in a good way.
Pat is wrong about wishing the chimera ants away with Alluka, that would be a terrible idea. The payment is equivalent to what you wish for and killing the King and all his bodyguards is a nearly impossible task for anybody on the planet. Who knows what devastation would be wrought by asking such a thing from her when Illumi predicted that curing {REDACTED} would possibly kill hundreds of people.
Although nobody knew that was the case beforehand so that wouldn't have been an option at the time. I do agree however that there being no price for healing {REDACTED} indicates that it might have been feasible which does diminish the importance of the Chimera Ant Arc, then again maybe Alluka only did it because it was emotionally important to Killua rather than just some important thing that needs doing.
It really is when you think about it, the only reason that cheap bomb worked was because it was put inside of the strongest person ever as a last resort and even then it didn't completely kill him. And given the fact that these Ants get stronger each generation, the bare basic Ants from the next generation could have been just as strong as the Royal guard or at least close to them which would destroy the world of Nen users, especially when the next King would be waaaaay stronger. Though technically they aren't the world ending threat considering that the world is apparently waaaaay bigger than just the one known to humanity.
Yeah, pretty sure the ending of the arc was saying human's ability to deceive basically puts them on a higher level than any other species despite being so weak in comparison. So much so that even a cheaply made mass produced bomb was able to wipe out the biggest threat to humanity anyone had ever seen.
I like to compare Gon's "Final form" to Ichigo's hollowform. Nigh unstoppable, VERY cool, *EXTREMELY* BAD, and is not Something the protags EVER want to do again
Using the monkey's paw would have been the worst idea in history. (unless a certain silver boi did it, but he was kinda preoccupied at the time) Imagine the price to pay if someone at some point were given the requests afterwards. Nobody could have paid it. Then the cost. "You, and at least 100 000 000 people will die" Because that would have been a wish on a magnitude unheard of.
Honestly, I really like the 1999 version. I can't be alone in that, can I? Yes it's a slower burn, but despite the more limited animation, the show (particularly the Hunter's exam) *oozes* atmosphere. The 2011 version is still ultimately better and easier to get into, but I don't think the 99 version is terrible; just less binge-able. It sounded like Woolie's problem with the original was that he kept asking "when will this story stand out" when the 99 Hunter Exam was more about slowly building anticipation for the rest of the series; I wasn't actually into the story until Gon gets Hisoka's badge, and that's like 25 episodes in.
Kurapika creating his chains is my favorite bit from the 99 version. Shit was gorgeous. I also like how they handled "nen after death" in that version.
I love the 99 version! Big part of it is exactly that slower pace. One of the most memorable parts of that adaptation is the boat filler from the Hunter Exam. These wannabe hunters get dropped off on this derelict ship and they have to use teamwork to get that shit running again. Its so simple, but I love it. Diving under water to clear the seaweed and lichen off the rotors. Everyone contributing. Just wonderful. Another part is the antiquited technology they use in the 99 version. Its a weird thing to fixate on, but I think its similar to why Shadowrun is so interesting, with its cyberpunky 80s aesthetic. In a similar way, the older tech in 99s HxH is just awesome, because despite not probably being intentional at the time of writing, afterwards it helps to add to the uniqueness of the setting. Gon and Killua using this oldass computer to access the Hunter information brokering site, which turns out to be this janky, early 90s looking website. If I recall, in the new anime they didn't bother with that. They just had the bartender, very regularly give them their info on Greed Island, while in the 99 version he remained the janky looking, static sprite. Its the same reason why it bothered me so much how everyone was using smartphones and tablets. The old anime has this grittiness about it. Everything is dirty and worn out. It all just seems so much more alive and interesting to me. The perfect example is probably Gons house in each adaptation. In the 99 version, its this... Symbiotic home built into the roots of a giant tree. It just screams to me about what kind of life Gon had been living. You can just imagine him sleeping, windows open and at the crack of dawn shooting out of the window to go fishing or something. In the new one? Its just a house... On a hill... Thats fine, I guess, but I'm always going to be partial to the way the 99 anime did things. Theres just so much spirit in everything. Also, when someone got hurt in the old anime GODDAMN did it look painful. They would always swell up and turn black and blue. Yowch!
@@Rautakello For me it was the music. HxH 2011 has great music, but 99's is so *unique*. Honestly reminds me of a PS1 RPG score. I also love that catching the fish is the climax of the first episode, rather than the introduction. You have a lot more context for who Gon is, his relationship with Aunt Mito what being a Hunter means and why Gon would find it so appealing. Most importantly, you have context for the Manga's opening scene and you have stakes for if Gon doesn't catch the Lord of the Lake, which makes it the climax to a minor story arc in its own right.
@@Erk1234567 Holy shit, tell me about it! The OST has such good goddamn songs. Especially the ones that use the flutes are absolutely amazing and really put you into this adventurous mood. So many of the tracks just nail the mood perfectly. In general, I feel that the old anime really treats the world much more seriously than the new one. The feeling in the old adaptation makes everything mysterious and a bit sinister, which contrasts beautifully with how silly some of the characters look on the surface. Illumi and Killuas meeting at the end of the Hunter exam is a great example. Illumi was given a very effeminate, female sounding voice and that contrast was made all the more creepy by the lighting and his dead eyes. It honestly made Illumi much more creepy and terrifying than the new one. Many people compliment the new anime for its vibrant colors, but to me that cuts away much of the enjoyment I always had with the old anime. The HXH world is very deceiving in that way. It wears this happy mask on the surface, but when you peel that away, theres this underbelly of mobsters, murderers and sexual deviants underneath. In the end, I love both adaptations for different reasons. Its all good stuff after all.
@@avoryeda7606 I wouldn't go that far, but I will say that it's telling that even fans of the 2011 version have to apologize for its first impression. The first episode of 2011 was a chore for me; the first episode of 1999 felt like reading the first chapter to a classic adventure novel.

Yeah Sasuke did a few bad things and designed to rule the world (For Peace), but in reality the villages aren't meant to be a super force of good. They existed to solely keep a balance in the world. A lot of terrible stuff happens to keep that peace, but the show chooses to mainly show the idealist who see villages as forces of good like Naruto. They are Ninja, mercenaries who get paid to fight and kill. They raise child soldiers. They kidnap and kill enemy child soldiers. They have black ops and secret organizations that do terrible stuff, but get a pass most of the time. And when say a famous ninja of one villages hears that their leadership ordered the genocide of one of their own clans and hid the truth, he think the younger brother who made the sacrifice of wiping out his family for peace, should just naturally return to the village to carry on his good will.

Woolie thinks the Great Ninja War arc is a flashback!
pat didn't say which ninja war, so it confused him; by now hes probably had 100 emails telling him he was wrong.
I wouldve actually preferred a old ninja war flashback arc to the mess we got
Sometimes he’s not wrong, other times, haha
7:30 I listen to Pats analogy and I'm astonished just how *accurate* it is. I honestly understand who is suppose to be in HxH in that desciption.
21:00 About that "Monkey Paw" thing as Pat put it. It was later in the Manga explained that it most likely wouldn't finish off the Chimera Ants (Maybe one and not from a distance).
Still I recommend you guys check out the ongoing manga. You mentioned Game of Thrones and Jojo, the current arc is pretty much Game of Thrones with JoJo.
Was it said the Monkey Paw couldn't? I can't recall a rule about not killing anyone. And maybe aside the King no ant is a match for it aura wise.
The problem with using Nanika for the Chimera Ants is that to make that wish the next request would be something no one would be able to accomplish and probably a massive amount of people will die in relative quality to the chimera ants... meaning perhaps a large population of the Earth.
but Killua has cheat codes
There was literally no need to use Nanika at all. The end of the arc is supposed to show that humanity's darkness was more than enough to deal with them. The Ants never stood a damn chance, worst outcome was the entirety of NGL would be nuked with rose bombs. Kill civilians, but since when has government cared? It'd be a "necessary sacrifice for the safety of mankind." Meruem recognizes too late just how evil humans can be.
Waitsell Jones but Killua could just order her to and there would be no problem
Stay tuned to Woolie's channel where Woolie watches Hunter x Hunter with Pat lol

Woolie's Hunter x Hunter Adventure when?
Pat said it’s good. Woolies already dismissed it.
@@deeta000 woolie is too proud to admit how fucking wrong he is that's why he refuses to watch it

I can understand not having the time.
It's not even like he's the stubborn asshole type, generally speaking (if anything that's more like Pat, ironically enough), that's why I don't really get why he's making such an exception just for HxH.

mauro banegas It wasn't anything great in the beginning and went to shit hard after the Chunin Exam.
@@SonicMegaKing I disagree and agree. The begining it's freaking solid and nothing to be ashamed off, it really did have a more emotional begining that at the time separate it from the rest, good stuff. However i do agree that in the chunin exams the series escalated to quickly, like they were summoning Kaijus already. I don't think the follow up to that is trash but it's where the series starts to show it's problems. I think that after the Sasuke rescue arc the thing that follow are kinda mid with some highlights, however Pain arc is legitmly good and what follow is just not good, but there were some kickass fights.
Fuck this is so badly written. Sorry for my subpar english.
@Mad4Life The Pain arc is fantastic too. The way Kishi handled the characters there was great

Best way to describe the chimera ant arc, " Perfect Cell dropped in Jojo bizarre adventure "
But The Hunter Exam has Hisoka
It's funny because the Hunter Exam is a really well made arc yet so weak in comparison to the rest of the show.
HxH begins at the Tower arc imo
Thebes342 i
My problem with HxH is tone. It's like, on one side super weeb trashy fun and on the other ultra dark horror, they don't mash. For example you have a toddler having her brain eaten like pat said but at the same time you have a metalhead lion-human-ant hybrid surfer dude that fights using a surf board.
Leorio for president.

6027 Nah. He has to get out of his My Hero Academia cocoon.
eh i wouldn't hold my breath, woolie loves to roll in the juicy stew of contrarianism
6027 He’s also a huge Araki fanboy. The last 10 chapters of HxH have had so many JoJo references in them.
Gon's character is not finished though. Even if he's not in the current arc, he'll probably be back for the story about Gyro, the villain briefly introduced in Chimera Ant, who went to Meteor City.
i think pat's analogy for Ging woulv've worked a little better if he said itachi instead of sasuke. or Tenchi's mom from tenchi muyo. or better yet the dad from fallout 3
The baby from Fallout 4 lol
Itachi doesn't work though, as Woolie is already past the point where they reveal that Itachi was a good guy all along
@@AlfredoTaken i'm aware of that but i was kidna thinking mroe almost a reverse itachi. where Gon and a few of ging's friends talk good about him but the rest of the world see him for what he really is

What's up with Woolie's energy here?
ah geez i didn't know anything about jump force until i looked it up, prompted by this, and Y I K E S Y'ALL!!! IT'S BAD!! vague spoilers below but i'll keep it brief
the entire POINT of gon-san (the big buff gon with the hair that extends into the sky forever) is to be the OPPOSITE of a super saiyan style power up. the point isn't "oh cool, he powered up, now he's strong." the point is "yes he powered up but holy shit, at what cost? what a sickening, awful, horrific thing this is that has happened to this literal child, to his body and his mind, because of this horrible situation he's been put in. holy shit someone make him stop."
so yeah i definitely feel like including that as a simple "stronger form" in a game is Very Weird and kind of upsetting
In the game its Balanced that if you use it in round 1 or it runs out in round 2 Gon is unusable for the rest of the match so it does stay true to source
Also pats analogy is spot fucking on I didn't get it til later
the ant arc by all means shouldn't work but togashi is a god damn genius writer
What if cell popped, in early Naruto. Just after the exam arc.

17:55 well, to be fair, they literally had no choice but to let Sasuke back in and forgive his crimes. He was basically a demigod in their world. At that point, Naruto was the only one who could have done anything about him and he said he didn't want to

Can I get a "literally" count?
Shout out to the real OG of this arc: Isaac Goddamn Netero.
An old man so badass that he managed to hold his own against Meruem's power-level bullshit despite being no longer in his prime. So awesome he archived Kung Fu Nirvana by praying and punching every single day.
Cool old dude, Leader of The Hunter Association and current holder for the greatest "Fuck you, you didn't win!" moment I have ever seen in anime.
And yes, I am 100% with Pat's deal of "I don't care how much character development you underwent, you still killed a shit-ton of people so you gotta die." Few things bother me more than easy anime forgiveness...fucking Sasuke.
To make a similar use of dragon ball z analogies. For Gon's transformation and why you really shouldn't use it so lightly:
Imagine if the first time Goku went super saiyan, it was legendary super saiyan instead.
There's a time limit but that time limit is however long the dude who pissed you off is alive and who's corpse is still intact
Luckee Strikee If you’re using a berserk analogy, the best point of comparison is the first time Guts puts on the armor and gives into the beast
@@soarel325 I don't know, as an event I think it's closer to Griffith's. For the purpose of a game power up I think Gon's and Griffith's are more contextually inappropriate, but maybe yes, mechanically it's more similar to Guts'.
Luckee Strikee Ah, I see what you mean.
I am so happy Pat sat through the entirety of HxH. As expected, he is now one of us.
Chimera Ant arc is the best arc in any shonen anime
Is it selfish of me to ask for a compilation of Pat talking about his experiences watching HxH for the past however many podcasts?
that filthy room got feeling very dirty holy shit thats why this guy is almost on hiatus
Literally howled and laughed until I was light headed when Pat was talking about Ging
What about komugi though?
Perfect editing!
I saw an image of the work schedule of a mangaka some time ago, and I'm not surprised his room looks the way it does. They only get like 3 hours of free time in a week.
Honestly I really love super eyepatch wolf's analogy, it's hyperbolic but it really gets across the core appeal of the arc.
It's so weird hearing Woolie and Pat talk and then a third mysterious voice chime in, usually to add nothing of real value

Man did that series come out of nowhere; I just found it by chance. Good enough for me to buy the manga after it ended tho
Manga just started back up too.
I didn’t expect the ant edit
The Chimera Ant arc was just insanity in pretty much every good way possible.
That last episode of it made me feel, which is fucking hard to do with me.
I also agree that the 'The Biggest You didn't win.' is fucking crazy and the sheer insanity in how it does so truly impressed me.
Because it did so in the most baffling way, but in a good way.
Poor Man's Rose. Fuck yeah.
i wonder if hunter x hunter will get another anime
Pat is wrong about wishing the chimera ants away with Alluka, that would be a terrible idea. The payment is equivalent to what you wish for and killing the King and all his bodyguards is a nearly impossible task for anybody on the planet. Who knows what devastation would be wrought by asking such a thing from her when Illumi predicted that curing {REDACTED} would possibly kill hundreds of people.
Except there's an easy way to bypass the tasks altogether.
Is it really a world threat if a single cheap bomb can solve the problem?
If it takes a point blank nuke to solve an issue, yeah it's a pretty big issue
If there was someone who could only be killed with a nuclear weapon (point blank, mind you) then they'd be a pretty big threat.
Remember, it wasn't the explosion that killed him
Liked for ANTS
Ok maybe togashi did have ants but did he have FUCKING ANTS THAT ARE JUST FURRIES
When was there as auditorium of people telling someone they sucked?
Leorio shit talking Ging and getting votes to get on the Hunter council because of it
Ohhhhh yea that's right! Thanks dude
I like to compare Gon's "Final form" to Ichigo's hollowform. Nigh unstoppable, VERY cool, *EXTREMELY* BAD, and is not Something the protags EVER want to do again
Using the monkey's paw would have been the worst idea in history. (unless a certain silver boi did it, but he was kinda preoccupied at the time)
Imagine the price to pay if someone at some point were given the requests afterwards. Nobody could have paid it. Then the cost. "You, and at least 100 000 000 people will die" Because that would have been a wish on a magnitude unheard of.
I love HxH
But now he needs to check out the amazing Succession War going on in the manga
Wait, the Great Ninja War was that long? I've read through that arc from start to finish and it didn't seem like it took up most of the series to me. At least it didn't have filler.
It takes up a third of the series and it's where Naruto gets shit.
Maybe it's by manga length because the show has an insane amount of filler
Yeah. Now the only thing that is left is too convince Woolie and Eyepatchwolf that the 99 version is great and the HunterxHunter redemtion arc will be completed.

ILOVEHUNTERXHUNTER

I'm unfamiliar, what is it?
