This sounds really great! I love the idea of being able to play the synth outdoors, more synths should be built with that type of freedom in mind. I think it'll eventually be one of those things that's a standard, like how laptops always have batteries.

Do you have any delay with raspberry Pi?
my nanokey2 have 0.25 sec delay in win11. That makes me crazy. I think I should replace my laptop with raspberry Pi

Actually seriously considering doing this. Thanks

super amazing job! this is so freaking cool. I don't understand how any of it works, but i love it.

What are the possibilities for adding drum sampling to your design?
Would adding the external LCD screen make it easier to use the device as a “portable” music studio similar to OP-1?

Perfect timing. I've been looking into a regular nanokey2 to control my synths through my workstation via USB. How do you change MIDI channels on it? Software? The front panel doesn't appear to have any MIDI stuff unless it's a hidden thing.
Nice video btw. I'll never sell my Volca Keys because of its battery functionality. It's nice to "unplug" from the main set-up every once in a while.

So I've been using my phone to control all of the sounds.
Yeah exactly having a battery is actually amazing in a synth.

Great idea, maybe version 2 will get a little tactile display?

Yeah definitely one of the first potential upgrades I would do to this device!
At the moment I'm using my phone to display the output of the rpi via SSH

excellent my man, and you also look like a romantic pianist of old (except the clothing)

for your purpose it seems quite nice but i dont think its an Alternative. Theres no sampling/effects/lfos/sequenzer/tape. tbh i dont even think that the OP-1 is too expensive. think about it you get a crazy versatile Machine with 14 hours of Battery life and build like a brick. and it holds its Worth. i bought an used op-1 2 years ago for 700, sold it for 1100 and bought a newer one used for 1100. If you would buy a 4 track tape recorder, sampler, sequenzer, synth, mixer seperately you would spend way more then 1100. Of course you would have more options but you cant take your gear hiking for example. I think the best Alternative to an OP-1 is an ipad with midi controller (if thats possible) or just a labtop. The Problem i see with the OP-1 its like a swizz Pocket Knife - it has pretty much everything but everything sucks pretty much. God that op-1 reverb is the shittiest ive ever heard. For me the best Alternative would be an Korg Electribe but i like Techno i dont think it would suite your music style as much as thee thng you build there.

Yeah I totally get it. I did have an op-1 for a bit, but for my personal use I only found myself using it for basic purposes like songwriting, and wasn't ever really able to get an amazing sound out of it in terms of recorded stuff (would always end up with random clicks, and even had other glitches in the recordings). But yeah I suppose it's an alternative for me, but not for everyone, it really depends on what you use the op-1 for.
Also in saying that, many of the features you are talking about could be implemented on the raspberry pi with a bit of programming, including adding a screen. Although it definitely would take a bit of effort and I understand the rpi is limited in terms of processing as compared to the dedicated processor of the op-1.

@@geordie_tomo "with a bit of programming" :'D im literally a Sheepherder and cant even use Excel properly. if you could do the Magic to get a 4 track Tape Recorder on the pi i would give you everything. Btw do you know the organelle? you can program it "easily" i think it has an pi but also a keyboard, knobs, screen, aux/midi input and is powered by AA Batteries. i didnt like it tho. But i think its quite possible turn any pi into an organelle

    • @geordie_tomo
      @geordie_tomo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah that's definitely true it's not a simple process, even just setting it up to this point requires a reasonable programming knowledge base. In saying that, there are already DAWs that exist for the pi, that you could integrate into the system which would be able to do more than 4 tracks. Obviously there's limits in other ways though.
Yeah I've seen the organelle but wasn't a huge fan, even that seemed a bit expensive considering what it does.
