    Thank you for your informative video. I was struggling with one-armed router (router on a stick) config with VLANs in Packet Tracer but followed your examples and go it working 100% first time. Thanks again.

      Your video is almost exactly like an assignment I have for university (computer networks subject), so this is a god send for me. I was really confused about the IP range setting on the router (dot1q encapsulation) and you explained it great.

    Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. Got one question??
    When creating any subinterface, should the name of the interface be the same as the VLAN ID?
    Example: If I create vlan 50 then will the subinterface be created as
    “Interface fastethernet f0/0.50” or can the subinterface be “interface fastethernet f0/0.4”??

    • @dipakbari4
      @dipakbari4  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily, you may use any subinterface whatever you like to put. I gave for my convenience to demonstrate. So, other people learn it easily and nothing else.

    Thank you for the great video! I am struggling on vlans and routers. I am happy creating Vlans on switches but I don't understand the concept of giving the Vlan an IP? Do I need to do it on every router??

    • @dipakbari4
      @dipakbari4  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad the video helped you.
      Well in the case of Inter VLAN the IP address is required due to the segmentation of the different networks. As we know that the Switches work on the Layer 2 of the OSI reference model and the purpose of inter VLAN is to allow intercommunication of VLANs which is possible through a Layer 3 device(s) and protocol. But, if you are using L3 Switches then a router is not needed in that case.

    • @SamFenney-cr6df
      @SamFenney-cr6df ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dipakbari4 Thank you so much for responding!
      In that case, if I wanted to give Vlan 20 an IP. Do I need to add it on every layer 3 switch?

      just remove the ip from that interface and re-assign it. To remove ip address from a specific port use 'no ip' command there. Hope this will help you.

    Hi Dipak, thanks for this wonderful explain but am a little confuse, what ip was configured on the Router (default gateway or vlan ip address?
    Secondly is there another way of doing this configuration that allows the vlans to be configured with ip address and default gateway on the switch?

    • @dipakbari4
      @dipakbari4  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. VLAN ip address was there.
      2. Try Layer 3 switch to avoid the implementation of Router to this scenario.

    Whats inter Vlan routing

    • @dipakbari4
      @dipakbari4  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VLANs divide broadcast domains in a LAN environment. Whenever hosts in one VLAN need to communicate with hosts in another VLAN, the traffic must be routed between them. This is known as inter-VLAN routing.
      See the below link for detail information.
      www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/lan-switching/inter-vlan-routing/41860-howto-L3-intervlanrouting.html#:~:text=VLANs%20divide%20broadcast%20domains%20in,virtual%20interfaces%20(SVIs)%20).

    Bro, I did same like you and have same configuration, but there is no ping reachability between VLAN 10 with other VLANs and vice versa. I can not upload .pkt file here, but I paste configuration here. Please help me to troubleshoot.
    Router Configuration:
    interface GigabitEthernet0/0.10
    encapsulation dot1Q 10
    ip address 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0
    !
    interface GigabitEthernet0/0.20
    encapsulation dot1Q 20
    ip address 192.168.20.1 255.255.255.0
    !
    interface GigabitEthernet0/0.30
    encapsulation dot1Q 30
    ip address 192.168.30.1 255.255.255.0
    Switch Configuration:
    interface FastEthernet0/1
    switchport access vlan 10
    switchport mode access
    !
    interface FastEthernet0/2
    switchport access vlan 20
    switchport mode access
    !
    interface FastEthernet0/3
    switchport access vlan 30
    switchport mode access
    !
    interface FastEthernet0/4
    ......
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
    switchport mode trunk
    show vlans
    10 HR active Fa0/1
    20 IT active Fa0/2
    30 FMD active Fa0/3
    IP addresses to three pcs are 192.168.10.2,192.168.20.3,192.168.30.3

    I didn't understand VLAN 10 with diff. IP ranges. 192.168.10.xx and 192.168.30.xx range.

    • @dipakbari4
      @dipakbari4  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For beginners it wasn't good to demonstrated too much deeply about it. I renamed the vlan 10 on 30 network with vlan 30, to easily understand the concept without making it complex. And also demonstrated the redundant assignment issue with vlan which was already assigned to the network.
      I'll use and will explain this things on the upcoming video. :-)

      here we using one router for 3 diffrent subnet addresses, so we have to divede the router into 3 ... encapsulation does this .... its means we teaching the router where those ip addresses are connected.
