Your videos that you share with as and this book it truly gives me hope that after so many years I can come back with a lot of work. What a great way to start the day 😸 I'm still light years (no pun intended) away from being remotely competent in playing Jazz but it's a great topic to explore to find new things, even for a bone headed metal bassist like me 😹
those are my roots too. i still LOVE metal but am so glad i still study this music. i play many different styles now and can tell you studying jazz has helped with all of them tremendously, including metal! 👍
Another album to check out is Lee Konitz’s Alone Together with Brad Mehldau and Charlie Haden is an absolute masterclass. Each player has an incredible unique voice in improvisation. Brad is outstanding
I absolutely Love this album. This kind of phrases Sounds Great on the piano when you can simultaneously control voicings with your left hand. I also think that high register makes it sound much better. I'm not so sure about making it sound great without high C on a bass:) thanks Janek, I've been using your books in my practice for many years now!
Hey Sir Janek. Dude, you and Patitucci have become my go to guys😂. Even though I find myself in more classic rock, texas-blues esque and funk I apply a lot of your melodic approaches to my lower register main lines. Just wondering, can you do an example video of how you would approach soloing in a 12 bar, 1-4-5 Blues rock type situation? Everytime I play I am thinking, damn I would love to hear Janek solo over The Sky Is Crying🤘🤘🤘. Your phrasing was built for it haha. Thank Janek, seriously. For helping ull my chops and mindset out of the rut.
Janek, I am shy to even ask as I m no match for this… (but I m happy to get across this video as I m interested in music theory, harmonies/progressions and the bass lines in particular; will get to your books, eventually…). Just taking advantage of not too many comments so far, let me ask you a silly question, sorry: why would you call it C major and where do you actually hear ii-V-I here? Your 4 measure “cycle-of-4th” fragment sounds to me like 2 bars of minor (Dm Dorian) move with some sort of harmonic minor style of half-cadence in the 4th measure to maintain Dm as a tonic (?)… I guess, you can write it in Cmaj key signature with all those accidentals but what if I just re-write it in Dm moll key signature with the same amount but more meaningful (imho?) accidentals? Or, even better, just hear it as a temporary deviation (tonicization?) to Dm (Dorian) , say, in a bigger “normal” A moll harmonic minor “circle-of-4th” standard, with a typical A7 as a secondary dominant to Dm? - respectfully yours
I actually managed to study with Larry Grenadier privately for 2 1/2 years and he taught me so much obviously I was constantly picking his brain’s about how and what you need to know to play with Brad (like you said it’s a lifetime of study). Brad is still one of my all time favourites, I met him through Larry and at a gig what a nice down to earth guy, which actually talked about family, politics etc. Brad had just moved to Amsterdam with the family. Sullivan Fortner and Tigran Hamasyan are 2 others who blow my mind. I also learnt so really great stuff from Jazz virtuoso guitarist John Stowell he’s language is incredible and I’ve tried to incorporate some of his concepts.
Because why would ignore one of the biggest metrics in the entire industry? Do I agree with their pricing and artist payments? No. But then I think $1,200 for a cell phone is pretty steep yet we all seem to manage to make that work. And don’t get me started on the cost of healthcare in the US, price gouging on almost every single thing we use on a daily basis, and the fact that a tiny fraction of the 1% make all the money. Fighting that is just pissing into the wind and expecting not to get wet. It’s more important, useful and stress relieving to use these things to your advantage than it is to battle something you’ll never beat.
