Been a straight A student my whole life and never thought of myself ever having ADHD until my school went online during covid and I couldn’t handle it at all, I was a complete mess. Then during the process of getting medicated I was noticing how I felt like I could cry when people were talking as I tried to do work and I have never been someone who falls asleep when my head hits the pillow. Keep showing yourself kindness & grace during the process but recognizing u need an extra shoulder to lean on by self advocating is one of the greatest steps! My dad always told me “honey your building yourself a mountain of stresses and work when you should just focus on what you can control today” you got this love xxxoooo

Hi Gretchen, I have been loving you and your videos for years now. I never comment on videos, but I thought I would share my own experience to hopefully help you and anyone on their journey. I am 25 and was diagnosed with ADHD this past year. I am an elementary school teacher and started to realize that I was showing the signs that my students with diagnosed ADHD had. I too had to let go of that fear you mentioned which is totally relatable btw!! I can now say that getting my diagnosis was the best thing I could have done as it made me understand the reasoning behind the way I think and why I do things in certain ways. The medication helped improve my daily productivity immensely! Do what is best for you and remember to give yourself grace throughout your journey. ❣

I was diagnosed with ADHD later in life as well and had a hard time doing simple daily things and getting easily overwhelmed so I hope you don’t feel alone!!

The place you made an appointment with for next August, try to call and see if you can be on a cancellation list!! I have had a similar situation and asked to be in their cancellation list and I was able to be seen sooner than expected!! it never hurts to ask. proud of you for taking charge of your health. It’s so hard, so be sure to give yourself a high five!!

Im so happy your taking this step tosee someone and there is a huge stigma around medication and I hope it lessens as time passes. I finally got help a year ago and was prescribed a low dose of anti-anxiety medication to help me wind down and relax and honestly its the best decision ive made for myself and I wish I had reached out for help sooner, wishing you the best of luck!

I cant get over how good your hair looks darker! also when I had to find a new primary care doctor when I got too old for a pediatrician it was such a struggle so I feel you girl! its crazy how complicated it is and in my area lots of doctors are leaving or moving to practices even further away which makes matters even harder.

I’m 26 and late diagnosed ADHD! Thank you for sharing the realness of your struggles, I can relate so much. women are often undiagnosed!! and access to healthcare is also such a struggle right now!! Hoping things improve for you ❤

I love that you’re sharing so openly about your struggles and about your plans to see a psychiatrist! It isn’t easy to make that decision so you should be proud ❤ one thing others have said that is SO key is to ask to be put on a cancellation/wait list at the primary care doctor. I have been able to see many doctors within 3-4 weeks of scheduling a “one year wait” appt all because of being on the waitlist.

I’m a therapist and work with a lot of people who have the same issue with sleep at night, try journaling before bed, doesn’t need to be too deep but just a quick brain dump! Can really help!! Also sooooo glad you’re getting a psychiatrist! I think meds would be really helpful hearing all your symptoms. The thing with ADHD is that it can be managed with different techniques but it never goes away and meds can really help!!

Gretchen my love I felt very similar to you about being overwhelmed and not being able to sleep at night. I would like to say this, before going to see a doctor try putting down your phone. A lot of those overwhelming feelings and thoughts came from me scrolling on my phone constantly and having information overload! And I’m not even a social media influencer. Personally I had to get ride of apps like tictoc which I know isn’t the answer you wanna hear because it’s so much fun to watch but those kinda of apps completely overwhelm your mind especially at night. I took the advice of reading a book before bed instead of scrolling my phone and saw a difference almost immediately. Just something to try 🤷🏼‍♀️

    GRETCHEN! Please read this.
As someone who has spent years in therapy and with a psychiatrist, please make sure to get diagnosed by your therapist FIRST before going on meds. Unfortunately in the US psychiatrists definitely push meds and will prescribe with little to no patient information. Make sure the psychiatrist you meet with spends time talking to you, getting to know you, and not just a quick 10 minute in-and-out “oh you had ADHD okay let’s start you on this talk to you in a month bye”. I’ve had wayyy too many psychiatrists just prescribe me meds without really knowing the big picture and it ends up being a huge trial and error rollercoaster of meds. Also please note that the first med you get on might not solve the problem/ might make it worse/ might have bad side effects. Don’t be afraid to try another med or two, but if you are trying more than that you need to get a new psychiatrist who looks more at the big picture and does more testing. Seriously my biggest tip. Therapists are getting paid to help you. Psychiatrists are getting paid to write scripts. There’s a huge difference!

Honestly I’m not saying this is the solution for everyone (or even possible for some), but it felt like such a weight was lifted off of me almost as soon as I came off the birth control pill. My anxiety practically went away and I finally started to feel swings in emotion again rather than just like a numbness.
If you’ve been on birth control for a while and feeling anxious or depressed, it’s definitely worth discussing options with your healthcare provider to see if there’s a different method that might work better. I was offered a lower dose version which should have lessened it, but ultimately decided I wanted to try nothing for a while to see what happened. Sometimes I think we almost forget that this thing we take everyday could be having an effect on us because it’s become such a part of our routine.

Maybe could try not having caffeine for a month or longer to see how that makes you feel. Or maybe just not have it so often. I can't think straight with too much caffeine. Roasted chicory & dandelion root are pretty good alternatives; taste-wise.

Pro tip for the Tim Tams! Bite off a little bit on each end and then use it as a straw to drink a bit of milk/coffee/hot cocoa and THEN eat the Tim Tam. My husband’s from Australia and taught me that and it makes the Tim Tam 1000x better 😂 the more you know 😅🤷🏼‍♀️

I hate this for you but sympathize! I was trying to get in to a doctor for a while - which was a huge hurdle for me as I hate going to the doctor. I was calling this June and everyone people referred me to for what kind of doctor I was hoping for were booked until October...2024. I gave up and now just use the VA which is sub-par care for what I need, but free as a Veteran.

    Hello Gretchen.
I’m a registered nurse & nurse practitioner student. Another option besides a medical doctor for your primary care you can also try to find a good nurse practitioner. This will open the availability to be seen before your August appointment.

My advice is talk to someone and change what you know is triggering you! But i dont think medication is a solution your strong enough to work through it! Your anxiety is situational it seems
Note: some people do need medication tho i understand that

    • @HugeMusicFan
      @HugeMusicFan ปีที่แล้ว

The way I look at it now is… you control who knows what medications you take. So you absolutely don’t have to tell anyone. If you feel embarrassed don’t. Is it more embarrassing having anxiety keep you from doing life or taking medicine if it helps? I used to be the same way. But honestly nobody cares we all are out here trying to do the best we can.
