    I just bought it (I live in Italy). I got the plain dagger, mine is sharp on both edges (very sharp), my best guess is that the double edged blades are illegal in some states in the US therefore a carry permit is needed. So it is in Italy for instance. The knife is great, clearly it has one and only purpose, stabbing. It's a black class Benchmade designed almost exclusively for military and law enforcement. PREPAREDMIND is damn right on the clip and I think I'll follow his advice. I highly suggest it, especially if you have some sort of fighting training, the concept is great and carefully designed. A must have for military/armed forces. But as a civilian I usually carry EDCs, I'd carry it for urban walks but then again it's like winning the lottery. You may just leave your house with it and nothing bad happens, you may leave your house without it and get trouble. And that dagger, gentlemen, is one bastard trouble solver.
    P.S. get the trainer too, just playing with it at home gives you high confidence with the knife.
    Cheers

      come hai detto, è illegale il double edge in italia, ma per fortuna c'è quello con single edge. Comunque non ha senso indossarlo al collo come lui...al massimo al contrario

    This is the best review I saw on the SOCP dagger so far. All the other reviewers have not mentioned that the regular its not sharpened so I was under the impression that the regular one had very sharp edges. The Nite Ize Eclipse was a great suggestion but I not very convinced of the cutting abilities of the civilian model because it's a very narrow blade.

  • @wayauwayi

    I have been watching videos on this knife for a while as a back-up to carry on my vest at work. I went with the dagger style but sharpened both edges when it came in. Now it will work not only as a stabbing weapon but will slash as well.

    Great review! Got the combo edge version following your advice. A few things that I would like to point out:
    1. This is the only fixed blade knife out there with a sheath that can fit discreetly in your pocket, right next to your smart phone
    2. It fits more securely in hand than all tactical pens, while weighing only twice more (sheath included) than most tactical pens
    3. It can be used as a more effective pry bar than most "edc pry bars"

    Thanks for the info on the nite ize clips. I have 2 of these SOCP knives and when I pocket carry it always pulls out with the sheath. You have literally saved me a ton of stress dealing with this problem.

    Chris, I dont think I have seen a video this good on the SOCP dagger! I am not a mall ninja. I am a regular guy looking for the best defensive carry with a firearm and think I've found what I'm looking for. The modification you came up with is excellant and I want to give you kudos for that! I will be buying this in the future and for your awesome review I will buy from your Amazon website page! Thank you! Thank you again for your awesome and honest reviews you are one of the best knife and gear channels out there! Keep 'em coming and we will be watching!

    Great Review Chris! Thanks for pointing out the difference in function between serrated and plain edge functionality. I don't usually go for serrated knives, but in this case it makes more sense - especially because I'm NOT a special operator and it is MUCH more likely I'll use this for edc tasks than stabbing a bad guy!

    I was looking at the rescue hook version to wear on my duty belt. Mainly because as a belt cutter/ window breaker, it's useful, plus it's sort of tough to explain a fixed blade dagger on a Law Enforcement uniform. But I still feel that the rescue hook could still be used defensively, just not as a cutting tool. I think if you had to stab someone with it, they'd still be hurting.

      Nice to know, I didn't get the mindset of "dull edges are better for the dagger."
      Sharp edges will pierce better and you can slice at a wrist or face for a "get off" move.

    Another good way to retain the sheath is having some type of cordage attached to a belt loop to the sheath. This works out better for something where the knife stays there permanently

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen a bunch of ways. I'm a "simpler is better" type. It's obviously a pocket clip...but it serves no use as that only way to draw it is to torque it a bit away from your body before drawing from the pocket first. But I'm not willing to take the chance that you can reliably do that under duress, and its primary purpose is use under duress.

    Put distance between you and bad guy? If you are trained, aggressive and willing, this will kill. No gun needed. If you are attacked, I don't like the mind set you are already thinking about transitioning before the fight begins. Don't think "distance". Think eliminate. If he is that close that this knife is a option, finish it. Be aggressive.

    I wish Benchmade put more thought into the steel. For a over $100 small cutout piece of steel it should have a bit better blade material. They should have at least chosen a more corrosion resistant metal.

  • @canadafree2087
    @canadafree2087 ปีที่แล้ว

    Update: The current models now come with a fold under sheath so the sheath does not come out of the webbing when you draw the knife. Not a slicer, blade is too thick for that and i find they don't sit well in the hand for slicing anyway.

  • @DarkPhoenixTSi
    @DarkPhoenixTSi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the standard SOCP, even though the edges aren't sharp, it is still considered a dirk or dagger in many jurisdictions. That makes the combo a better option for EDC. Another option for carry is IWB with a paracord tether to your belt, kinda like Lucas Bernly's Obake. It would allow you to draw it without needing to add a clip to the sheath.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Craig Wildfeuer Thing I don't like about that is, unless you find the perfect way to set it up, you have to draw it pretty far before it's free of the sheath. On little knives, that works fine. But that sheath encases almost the entire knife.

    • @DarkPhoenixTSi
      @DarkPhoenixTSi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a look into the CRKT Obake as a budget option. It's a copy of Bernly's Kwaiken and they run about $30. I know here in PA, I would run into issue carrying the SOCP.

  • @nanomaine
    @nanomaine 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for another great review!
    I bought two SOCP Daggers with great hopes, but neither sheath retains well. If you turn the sheath upside down and shake once - the dagger falls out. I'm concerned about retention, in daily or rough use - so haven't carried them. Is there a good way, to increase retention?
    Can you see any downside to sharpening the dull daggers, either on one or both edges? Thanks for the input!

    Your preference is a lite civilian version (California style) of the real thing, which is 176. And the biggest detriment in your preferance is that holding a dagger and defending yourself u don't think of which side the sharp edge runs. In your case u will have to and will not know until u look at it. As to cutting option I more than agree and it wоn't take me long to sharpen 176 any way I like, serrated or not, one side serration or both. And the cutting edge will be longer to boot.

    I guess if a guy runs out of bullets and if this dagger fails he takes a cyanide capsule , this looks like the type of knife a guy buys then winds up in a drawer with others and upon reflection he realizes wow ! I could have bought a top flight blade for what I spent on this stuff, like the Jessmuk as an example. As always Chris a terrific review on a truly specialized blade.

    Regular version ("double edge") is better for the intended use IMO. You don't cut yourself when drawing your secondary with the dagger in your hand, changing mags etc. Plus, you can hook an attackers arm with it without cutting it badly.
    Basically it gives you the choice of either using it as a karambit or to punch holes in the threat.
    Just my 0.02!

      imagine you are a police officer from CA and you found this on a suspect. What would you call it if you didn't know anything about it? Doesnt matter what it really is, but what a judge thinks it is. Probably safe to call it a dagger.

    • @hellbentdescent
      @hellbentdescent 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically speaking, a dagger should be symmetrical on both sides, double edged and usually has a cross guard. Carrying the combo edge as an open carry in Cali shouldn't give any problems. Having solely just a spear point isn't considered a dagger imo.

    I want something I can grab and use instantly in a pinch, so trying to fumble a gloved fonger into this and getting a grip doesn't seem reliable. (I guess that's why it comes with the trainer to build the required motor skill and consistency)

      Connor mockbee clip is actually designed for webbing. That's why the sheath is so thin. So it'll fit in between the loops.

    I wish CA doesn't ban telescopic batons and blackjacks. I'd rather use those than a blade for self defense.

    • @hi161g
      @hi161g 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Batons are shit for defense. Only way they are good is as a more lethal use "Aim at the head".

    • @JustSimplyBrandon
      @JustSimplyBrandon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Zoraldo_MMO based on what consensus? Did you have experience using them and seeing them fail? Was the brand of baton a high end brand? Or are you just opinionated based on bias or just looking at the tool? If what you say is true, then link something that proves your point, including what brand and model of baton used and the situation.

    • @hi161g
      @hi161g 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +JustSimplyBrandon I have very little experience in real world with the baton but... Talking with many sheriffs and security guards they all say the same thing. They work for Windows and intimidating but if that person attacks it sucks because you can't get good strikes that close. Thats why I stopped carrying one and swapped it out for a Taser and knife.

    • @JustSimplyBrandon
      @JustSimplyBrandon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Zoraldo_MMO that I believe. From what I gathered, batons are not meant to brutally hurt the attacker but rather keep them at a distance. In close range, especially with a longer baton, yes that's where the problem occurs, more so in tight confinements. But I still would carry one in pair with a shorter tool.

    double edge does more then stab its also for thorowing belive me that is more effective at stoping somebody then a gun and is more safer to use in a reative situation when you wear that knife on your neck i perfer to wear it upside down its twice as faster to whip it out and when you snatch it out its ready to blow unllike when you take it out upright you then have to use two motions to blow instead of one know what i mean

    • @MattGoesSkiing
      @MattGoesSkiing 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @MattGoesSkiing

      rehsif mas stabbed. Last time I checked blades can't tumble when they hit your chest going 3000FPS from 600 yards away and end up coming out the back of your thigh.

      You must have one hell of a throwing arm for a thrown knife to be more effective at neutralizing a person than a hollowpoint bullet that impacts at supersonic velocities.

    I aggressively bent my clip in and reattached it. Since I've done that I've had zero issues of the sheath. The stick on adhesive option will bite you in the ass in cold weather or conditions as we all know adhesives fail quickly in cold weather. In no way would I or could I recommend this mod for me or anyone to stake their lives on. As for serations. On this particular knife I agree they are a welcome addition. But serrations on any blade other than this one or a Jumpmasters is utterly useless and unneeded. Even steak knives shouldn't be serrated as they tear the meat and destroy the texture. Serrations make sharpening a royal pain in the ass. On top of that they make slicing and chopping nearly impossible as you only have half or less of the blade to properly use. Ask Patrick Roehrman of MT Knives and one of the top sharpening experts what he feels about serrations. He says the best thing you can do is grind them off and then re-profiled the blade. If a knife is properly sharpened and maintained you don't need serrations. Look at hunting crossheads. They are nearly all non serrated because a serrated blade doesn't slice/cut as well. The only reason I agree that serrations belong on the SOCP is they will make a jagged wound and it's such a small blade.

    • @LCO213
      @LCO213 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steak knives are serrated because ceramic plates will destroy a sharp edge extremely fast. The teeth of the serrations protect the sharp edge from touching the plate.

    • @katyg3873
      @katyg3873 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Serrated knives tear at flesh so are perfect for defensive blades. The cut through everything, clothes, denim, skin,they just work. Even if they’re not perfectly sharp they still get the job done. Serrated blades just work.
