I grew up hearing The Who but never really connected with them. Then, one day, my 14-year-old daughter came up to me and said, “Dad, The Who is on their 50th anniversary tour. Can we go see them?” After I wiped a tear from my eye, I said I would look at ticket prices. We got floor seats at Wells Fargo arena in Philadelphia and had a great time. Since then, my daughter and I have bonded over classic rock, attending concerts and even building guitars together. I am a blessed man. Oh, and Quadrophenia has become my most played album.

Led Zeppelin's John Bonham was the true lead drummer.
That's what separated him from everyone else.
Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones both agreed that the best thing that happened was Bonham otherwise they wouldn't have been much different then their first group yard birds.
John's drummingstyle was unheard of in the 60s when he started playing with different angles...
Look up Bonhams lead drum style.

The musical and creative genius of Pete Townshend has not been fully appreciated, IMHO. Personal problems aside, he's left a heck of legacy. Daltrey's vocals on the Who's Next album are at their peak and Won't Get Fooled is still as powerful an anthem today as it was 52 years ago. Meet the new boss....same as the old boss. Pretty impressive! Thanks, Adam!

I guess Townsend predicted the Carter and Clinton Eras, as the Clinton's in '72 were actually in the McGovern primary campaign; though as mentioned, Townsend should have ceded Hoffman a few more seconds at least, and the fantastic talent of Woodstock security chief Wavy Gravy, and his "please force" deserves real study and respect and not cynical dismissal.
That said, getting fooled again, I feel is best exemplified by the "Environmentalist" factors doing elitist things like boosting Bay Area rents, causing housing shortages and homelessness with the support of too many Woodstock fans. You see the liberal elite repression best at the local level, like Hillary's Chappaqua NY.

I have a playlist of anti-establishment protest songs going back to the 1930s. It really does seem that the more things change, the more they stay the same. These songs reflect over 80 years of injustice. Everything from Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit", and "We Shall Overcome", to the many protest songs of the 60s from artists like Bob Dylan and Sam Cooke, to the more recent "This is America" by Childish Gambino.
Lyrics change to reflect current trends, but most are of the same theme, that "freedom" and the pursuit of happiness depend on one's wealth and concentration of melanin.

He is a good drummer, I don't mean to take anything away from him on that count, and he was a natural replacement for Keith because of their long-time friendship (that is, as long as they insisted on carrying on without Keith, which artistically was a bad move in my opinion), but it was still a disappointment - Kenney was no Keith. I've been a fan of The Who & their music since 1982. I was introduced to their music, through the final concert of their "farewell tour." December 17th, 1982 on pay per view.
Being eleven years old @ the time of the concert, I was hooked by the first note. Since then, I've seen The Who an additional 7 times. For two & half years, I was corresponding with Pete Townshend via the postal service. We traded Birthday & Christmas cards in that time, I'll cherish those for the rest of my life. I have cds of all twelve studio albums, most of them are the deluxe version. I also have vinyl versions of "It's Hard", the original & fortieth anniversary deluxe. John Entwistle's "Too Late The Hero", Simon's "Sweet Sounds" LP & "Empty Glass" as well as "White City: A Novel" by Pete.
I've also got vinyl copies of Roger's first album "Daltrey" & "Under A Raging Moon." The Who have been an amazing inspiration to my creative writing style, as well.
Most of lyrics are written as rock operas, & as we all know. Pete not only started the concept, he perfected it. I've also found myself gravitating, towards bands that write in that style as well.
Long Live Rock, Long Live The Who.

That 1982 tour was a great entry-level experience of a once great band. If you start there and go backwards, it's like watching a mediocre pop band grow into a maniacal rock powerhouse! And going forward from there, their live shows just got better and better. Follow them in either direction and they only get better!

@@beenaplumber8379 being eleven @ the time, I did dive into their past catalog & I was like why didn't I hear of these guys earlier? In the years that have followed I've been impressed with their live shows, especially the years John was still alive. After John's death, the years with Pino, "Rabbit", Simon & Zak.
Gave me the vibes, of the early WHO. Their two singles released in 2004, were fantastic. "Endless Wire" from 2006, was a great album. Many people didn't like the album for whatever reason, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. As I did, their 2019 album "WHO."
      I've seen them live three times @ the Hollywood Bowl. 2004, 2006 & 2019.
I was extremely impressed with each show & the shows I've seen via dvd. Tommy Live (2016), Quadrophenia Live (2013), impressed me as well.

@@johntanner3122 I've worshiped Entwistle since I was maybe 4-5 years old (~1970-71), sitting with Mom and listening to her Tommy album, which she played constantly. I asked her what that low boom-boom-booty-booty-boom-boom sound was. "That sounds like a bass guitar, like the kind Daddy plays only lower." That led me to learning bass and being a mostly semi-pro musician and teacher for ~45 years. I actually met him when he was touring solo, not long before he died. Sometimes people are disappointed when they meet their heroes. I was blown away by what a nice, gentle soul he was (and disarmingly shy). Very different from his stage persona.
My favorite post-Moon lineup was Ox, Roger, Pete, and Zak. Their other drummers were all fantastic (particularly Simon Phillips IMO), but Zak seemed to play by feel, like Mooney did, while the others seemed more focused on playing incredibly well. Zak is extraordinary. I saw that lineup in 96 or 97, when they were touring Quadrophenia. An incredible show, which I bet you have on DVD 🙂(I do!)
I never went back to see them after Ox died. It felt too sad, the idea of seeing them without the most amazing, personally influential, understated yet flamboyant bassist ever. Pino's a genius, for sure, but he plays with his own sound (as he should), and there's a huge hole in the band. I've seen videos... I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Few people focus on the bass like I do, I know, but for me personally, with my weird emotional attachment to him, Ox was the heart and soul of their show. I'm glad Roger and Pete carried on, and I know they continued to put on fantastic shows for millions of people who love them. I'm glad you got to see them as many times as you did too!

@@beenaplumber8379 I met John ever so briefly, in 1994. It was @ a Roger Daltrey Orchestral Tribute to Pete & his music. That show, was in Palm Springs @ the McCallum Theatre. After the show I saw John by the tour busses, sadly there was a fence between us & I didn't want to intrude on him. So I just yelled out, "I loved his music & how much he had inspired me."
He yelled back, "Thanks, it loves you too." Giving me a point & wink, as he entered a bus. That was my full & total experience with John, but it was enough of a memory to last me a lifetime.
Later that same show, I met Roger, Simon, Billy Nicholls & Jodi Lynn Scott. Got pics & autographs with Roger & Billy. Though I didn't know it @ the time I also met Bill Curbishley, during the show. Yes I do have that dvd, along with just everything else WHO related. All the studio albums, live albums, as well as some bootlegs. 🤫😄

@ the first Hollywood Bowl show, I met Eddie Vedder & Simon Phillips after the show. They were extremely cool, as everyone I've met through The Who.

@@johntanner3122 Wow, you are the Who superfan! I guess I'm more like that with John than the band, and I'm more interested in his music than anything. When I met him it was after his solo show at First Avenue in Minneapolis. The roadies (i.e., the very young and very talented opening band, who seemed content to pay their dues to be part of the tour) were loading out, and I was standing in front of John's massive "Little Manhattan" bass rig, studying every bit of it while security were ushering everybody out. When the place was nearly empty, a guy I assumed was his road manager walked onto the main floor and announced that John was willing to meet fans in his dressing room, 2 at a time. I went in with my wife. It was like a private meet & greet thing without all the mobbing fans. He signed my ticket stub and shook my hand, along with his keyboardist Alan St. John (formerly with Billy Squier & others).
He's always seemed very shy to me in interviews, and as the front man for his own band too. I think the 2 at a time meet & greet in his dressing room made it more tolerable for him to be with his fans without the crowds. He still seemed uncomfortable, but it seemed important for him to give us his time, which he didn't have to do.
You and I have been to a lot of rock shows, I think. I've never seen an artist do that before. Maybe meet fans out back by the bus, but never meeting fans in their dressing room. It was just Ox and Alan, my wife & me, and that guy who I think was his road manager.
Despite how I talk about him, I'm not into star worship. If I encounter celebs, I leave them alone. I even had an opportunity with Prince, at the height of his popularity, while Purple Rain was in the theaters, and I was a fan, but I left him alone, though my dad's girlfriend didn't. But I wasn't like that with Entwistle! My wife and I were the 2nd couple to go in to meet him. If I had known I'd have the opportunity to meet him in a quiet room I'd have thought of something meaningful to say or ask. We shook hands, and I thanked him for what he'd done for rock bass (pretty much inventing it) and for inspiring me - typical fumbling fan blabber. He could tell I was stumbling for words, and he and Alan had a quiet chuckle at my expense while they signed my ticket stub. Then he looked at me and thanked me in a way that felt sincere. My wife didn't know anything about either of those guys. She was mostly standing back and watching me make a fool of myself in front of my bass guitar god. John reached forward to offer her a handshake too. Alan did the same with me. It was awkward, I was a bit embarrassed, but they ended it on what felt like a sincere note of kindness.
Since then I've had the impression that John, and maybe all the guys in The Who, really did appreciate us fans, like they know that we're the only reason they got to live their opulent dream lives. I mean, where are musicians without their audience? In the basement, working meaningless day jobs. And how many songs and albums has Pete written from the perspective of the fan?
And that's the entirety of my encounter with Ox. (Sorry this got so long. I remember every detail of that encounter, and I love talking about him.)

In later years, as I listen to tracks like Won't Get Fooled Again, I am left wondering how a generation that grew up listening to this incredible music didn't do better. Should the day ever come when we are fighting in the street with our children at our feet, each side is likely to claim Won't Get Fooled Again as their anthemn without ever fully appreciating the message.

At the time, synthesizers could only produce a single note at a time. Baba is the greatest composition written for and played on these one note wonders. This album made me splurge on a pair of Sony MDRV6 headphones. I can't describe the feeling of listening to it under those headphones for the first time.

'Who's Next' is one of the greatest albums ever. 1971 was, I think, the best year in rock and roll history. Not necessarily what was in the singles charts, but, man, the albums from that year! My son (I'm 63; he's 22, and a big fan of album rock) thinks 1972 beats it, but this album, on its own, makes that a silly idea to me.
Every note on this entire album is etched into me. We had the 8-track when I was a kid, and we pretty much wore it out on the stereo my brother and I had in our attic bedroom, and for which we made our own speakers because we couldn't find any that had big enough woofers for this and other albums we wanted to hear LOUD. At the time, I knew nothing about the music's background and development, though the massage was very clear, even though I was a pre-teen when I first heard it. Since then, I've learned quite a bit of the back story, but as always, you've given me way more to mull over.
Now do Baba O'Reilly (unless you already have: I can't keep up!)

I got to see the Who in 67 or so, at a high school "dance". Shawnee Mission South. Best school dance ever! I sat on the stage, mesmerized by Pete's playing, Rodger swinging the Mike around.

On a totally different note, I found it to be so appropriate as the entering song for the CSI Miami series, the legendary scream always coming when the shock of the newest crime scene makes itself known - a brilliant use of this - and then the concept of not being able to fool the subsequent crime scene analysts because the science can always point the way - if the CSI members could use their brainpower to not be fooled - just another dimension of this song

3rd stone from the sun back in the early 70's. my uncles used to play prog rock all the time at my grandparents. i remember hearing it and being blown away. i was 3/4 at the time. because of my uncles, i love prog rock as they played a lot of that back then.

Songs like this are symbolic of the creativity and complexity that embodied music in the 70s and even early 80s. It seemed to have faded out especially in the 90s. Grunge and alternative was monotonous, dreary and just plain boring compared to the dynamic and exciting sounds of the 70s and early 80s. Back in the 90s I yearned for the kind of music I grew up to as a kid in the 70s.

There was a little local country/rockabilly trio that covered Fooled. The guitarist did a wonderful job of playing the synth part on guitar. They would start the night with Vonda Jackson and Patsy Kline, progress through the rockabilly classics and finish blasting this out. It was a fantastic ride.

Pete Townshend is THE best rock lyricist in history, Daltrey is THE best front man/lead singer and THE WHO is THE best rock band of all time.....especially LIVE. And every member is at least one of the top 3 at their instrument in rock history.....period.

Another great video, Adam. Thanks for this. I bought Who's Next when it came out. I was 17 years old. I Can See For Miles had been one of my all-time favorite songs and the Tommy a favorite album. So it was only natural that I wanted this album, even though I hadn't heard anything from it. Believe me, I was blown away, especially, of course, by Won't Get Fooled Again. Who's Next, is, in my view, one of the most important rock albums in history. It still sounds as fresh to my ears as it did more than 5 decades ago.

Ha, ha or as Pete Townsend said = " 3 geniuses & Roger". That's actually true, as Roger said this & added his quip of "thanks Pete". But I am sure back then Townsend really didn't appreciate Roger's skills & talents, but probably does now?
I have seen them live, a few times, in the 70's at The Rainbow & at Hammersmith & in the 80's at the Albert Hall, They were brilliant, knocked our socks off... especially when Keith was alive!!

If anyone wants to know what a great double album would sound like, narrowed down to one, this is it.
Since it was originally conceived as a double.
Who's Next is a great album that gets lost in the great free for all that is early 70s rock. A fantastic era.
