    I bought so many lenses on my previous system and didn't use them, so now I've challenged myself to buy only the 35mm. And the thoughts “oh, i need a zoom” also visit me, but I try to fight them and look for photos using only one lens. That's kinda hard :) But it's helpful in finding best composition by your eyes)

    This was a really great and useful video, Mike. When I first started taking photos, I was taking care of composition in post-processing, causing me to crop heavily and not have as much detail to work with. Once I started thinking about composition in camera and implementing many tips and tricks that you have taught, I have found myself with images that do not need as much cropping and maintain the larger sizes for the times that I want to print. Thanks for all that you do, brother.

      Thanks so much Steve,
      I'm not a huge fan of the golden spiral...it seems to be a fancy way of following the rule of thirds...I've only ever seen one or two photos successfully utilising the golden spiral in its true form...and most videos I've seen on it are just describing the rule of thirds or putting the spiral over images that it doesn't seem to fit that well...maybe I should make a video on this in the future...🤔
      I'm glad my images could help with each concept...I definitely need to work on incorporating or finding shapes in more of my images...it took a while to find the examples for that one! 😆

    👍 Good refresher, Mike! A useful compositional skill is frame “edge patrol”. When concentrating on a subject in a frame, I used to tend to overlook distracting elements around the borders. When unavoidable, cropping, or selective blurring in post can make things right - but not always. With practice I’ve learned to eye the whole frame for composition distractions - another take on working the scene to get the best composition.
    By now you must have 20k subs - congrats.🥇🥁
    I like the segment divider images, but the film reel in the lower left corner seems out of place when you are not discussing video. Perhaps a digital camera icon would be a better content match.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much Paul!
      Edge patrol is a really good thing to do. That is another thing I do subconsciously. It's a great habit to build where you look around the edges and background of your frame just before taking the shot as it is so easy to miss things!!
      13 subs away from 20k...😁👍
      The idea behind the film reel is that it is part of my logo so I'm just trying it out in different places so thanks for the feedback, it's good to know what people think. Those title pages took a while to render in photoshop 3d...although I think the text looks pretty cool I'm not sure I'll do them again as it took up most of the day! 😆👍

    • @mikesphotography

      Haha!! If one wished to place the most interesting point at an intersection then use the real rule, Phi Grid, since the original ROT didn't mention anything about the intersections. The ROT is about thirds such as the shoreline places along the bottom horizontal line and the horizon at the top one. Then, there is Figure ground relationship (it can be light/shadow, sharpness, contrast, etc.).

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your input and high levels of wisdom BFS; the rule of thirds is a simplified way that most people can understand easily and this is aimed at beginners.
      I’ve seen so many videos on the golden ratio where people place the concentric swirl over random images trying to make it fit...badly...that most beginners would get confused and would probably not completely understand it.
      You’re right, the original rule of thirds doesn’t mention intersections, but it has evolved over the years and intersections have been used more and more on cinema as well as photography that they can and are used.

  • @rpdigital17
    @rpdigital17 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The main 4 rules of framing and composition are: 1) the rule of thirds; 2 )the rule of odds; 3) the rule of space; 4) the rule of viewpoint. Some cameras have only 4x4 grid, some have useful 3x3 grid. Zoom lenses are better at chosing your framing and viewpoint, prime lenses get what you can get at the distance and later you need to crop to the frame to get your final composition.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great stuff, Mike. I need reminders.
    I confess, some of my best composition happens after the fact with my Photoshop wickedness and sin. 😈 I try to get it in-camera, but often, while reviewing images, I end up thinking, "Doh! I should have ______."

    Thanks a lot! Must become conscious about these things, for then to make them a part of my subconsciousness. Too often my first image is the best, and then I start thinking too much, making the rest of the images of the scene too rigid. Anyway, I've become more conscious about shooting at a low aperture, to put focus on the main element and blur out the rest, like this image I made this morning, where the main object is the trees in the background, blurring out the grass in the foreground. Too it has three elements, grass, meadow and trees: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gardskoronaen_i_Grythengen_27-09-19.jpg

      THat's a good way to isolate your subject, by opening up the aperture and making other parts of the image blurry compared to the part you want the viewer to focus on. 😁👍

      @@mikesphotography By the way, I just found out that Keystone in C1 can be adjusted with sliders as well, to adjust geometry. I only used free hand and found it quite difficult, so when the geometry was of I opened the file in Lr CC. But with this discovery I do now plan to get rid of Adobe products completely!
      The only things missing in C1 now is bracketing and panoramas. But I hear new Luminar IV is fantastic, and guess these things can be done there.

      @@mikesphotography My next step will be Affinity. I thought about Luminar IV, but got this answer from Capture One: "I would say if you are a Capture One user Affinity makes more sense as a complimentary product.
      " So it seems like there's a cooperation between Affinity and C1, like with Sony and C1.
      Here's my first image using Keystone sliders, and it works just as well as Lr Mobile: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Land%C3%A5sbygda_og_Land%C3%A5svannet_en_h%C3%B8stdag_29-09-19.jpg
      I too found out how to use Nik Collection with C1 last week. So it seems like my workflow will end up as follows: Sony Alpa + Capture One + Nik Collection + Affinity Photo.
      What do you think about this combination?

  • @paololarocca7684
    @paololarocca7684 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mike, I mostly think about the rules you mentioned (not so much colours so far....) and also at the overall balance of the image. I have a little problem with wildlife, especially a single animal, because often I don’t feel like putting it in the centre but neither at the thirds interceptions, so it ends up slight off centre, like in this photo flic.kr/p/2gwkxKN (a very heavy crop, by the way....) Do you think it looks awkward?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paolo,
      That's great that you think about these already...I need to work on incorporating more shapes in my images...in a way you have to decide which of these elements you use...most of the time it's a combination of different ones...it is one of the biggest things to learn in photography though.
      With your squirrel image, I'd push him ever so slightly to the right so he has some looking room, it feels like he's pushed up against the left side slightly...but that's my personal preference. I'd also get lower...to his eye level...but that might scare him away! 😆 Photographing single animals is tricky to shoot as for one it can be a fleeting moment. What I tend to do is shoot as many different positions in the frame as possible so I have time to work out what looks best afterwards...either that or shoot wider and crop.
      I hope that helps! 😁👍

    • @paololarocca7684
      @paololarocca7684 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Paolo La Rocca There is nothing wrong with placing it in the center (see David Yarrow's work), except modern photographers tend to find it too traditional. To place it off center, you need to understand positive & negative spaces. To appreciate composition, try viewing some of the iconic photos from Master Photographer Fan Ho.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BFS I did say in the video that you can have it dead center but in knowing this rule, and learning how it works, you can make an informed decision as to where you’re going to put your subject in your frame.
