    As a 12 year old seeing Star Wars on release in 1977, one of the most amazing “this really sells the authenticity of the world” scenes for me was early on in the film. They mention the droids arguing in this, which was really unique and funny, but on top of that is the combination of unique characters, tone and setting. The droids have crash landed in the desert of all places, one of the most primitive environments I could imagine, and here I am as a young teenager seeing these two advanced ‘robots’ have a little spat about which way they’re going to go. One doesn’t even speak English (or any other known human speech), but instead just bleeps and bloops, and the other sounds like a butler from Britain. But they’re robots....in the middle of a sandy desert with the sun glinting off of their metal bodies.
    It just completely blew my mind because I was used to seeing robots in completely different situations up until then. They were usually on spaceships or other sterile environments (like the ship you saw them in not long before) in the distant future of mankind, and they certainly weren’t going to get pissy with you and throw a silly tantrum. They were always cold and calculating. The combination of these gorgeous looking mechanical (yet relatable) beings, battered, grimy and oily from wear and tear, juxtaposed against the blue sky and sand dunes still just makes me stare in awe. This was new. Oh, and in this other scene behind the fussy gold robot there also appears to be the skeleton of a giant, ancient snake or dinosaur that doesn’t seem to matter? It’s just there in the background, pay it no heed. What the hell was this new place I was transported to in the cinema?

    Thank you for the great two videos about one of the greatest films of film history. I have loved your insight about Empire (and Mark Hamill is always fun and informative to listen) but I respectfully disagree with the point made by Joe Russo in 7:15 in which he says that the heroes haven´t suffered any "loss" in three hours into the trilogy. The group has suffered many losses, the most important: the death of Obi-Wan Kenobi that sacrifices himself in a "New hope". If he doesn´t let Vader strike him, all the group will be captured, because they won´t run away without him. That´s a huge loss, he was Luke´s new mentor and the hero that Leia was looking for. His sacrifice is a lesson for all and it talks about one of the main themes in Star Wars: to be a hero you have to sacrifice yourself for others. The three protagonist have suffered losses and they made sacrifices: 1.- Leia ´s planet was destroyed because she is one of the leaders of the new Rebellion, and i think she believes it´s on her even though she doesn´t say it. 2.- Luke that doubts about helping Obi-Wan in his quest against the empire, he learns fast what happens when good men do nothing to stop evil men. His uncles are killed by the empire. 3.- Even Han at the end of a New Hope must know for sure when he decides to stay with the Rebellion, and not paying his debt with Jabba the Hutt that this will have a cost in his future. That being said I´m really looking forward for more videos.

    Great viewpoints on the social implications of the events in this film. Mark Hamill is always so great at talking about the history of this film he should be the official historian on Empire Strikes Back. The Leigh Brackett script history is interesting because very little is said about how different it was before Kasdan came in. What was so radically different about It that they had to jettison her ideas for someone else? To me, Empire is the best SW film. None of the films after came so close to such majestic greatness. Anybody here ever listen to Siouxsie and the Banshees Dazzle? Empire is the Dazzle of SW films.

I'm glad that his ideas about Luke didn't interfere with the vision of Rian Johnson for TLJ. That's right, I said it. The Last Jedi is a great Star Wars film. The themes/motifs of TLJ remind me of top notch Star Wars storytelling such as Empire Strikes Back.

    Have to correct the interpretation of the Vader/Emperor scene: Vader knew all along in EMPIRE that Luke is his son. It states at the very beginning that Vader is obsessed with finding "young Skywalker," and in his first scene in the movie, he senses Luke's presence on Hoth and says, "The rebels are there. And I'm sure Skywalker is with them." He knows. He HAS to know, for the story to work. Lucas muddied the waters with those changes he made in 2004, but thankfully he didn't completely botch it. When Vader asks the Emperor, "How is that possible?" he's CHALLENGING the Emperor. Because Palpatine told him at the end of REVENGE OF THE SITH that Padme had died on Mustafar--that Anakin had killed her. But if she died because of Anakin's choke-hold on her, then how could Anakin's child be alive? Vader is daring the Emperor to admit he lied to him all those years ago, and the Emperor just kind of sidesteps the issue. That really is the only way to interpret it without the movie falling in on itself. Vader not knowing till halfway through EMPIRE that Luke is his son is ridiculous. He's been searching the galaxy obsessively for Luke since before the beginning of the movie because he already knows that Luke is his son.

    • @ChartreusianInfusion
      @ChartreusianInfusion 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glenn Greenberg Disagreed. Vader allowing the Death Star to be destroyed by the rebels is his biggest failure in decades. Of course he’d be obsessed with vengeance toward the kid that blew it up, that’s how the dark side works.

    • @glenngreenberg2712
      @glenngreenberg2712 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChartreusianInfusion You don't think Vader figured out that the kid who blew up the Death Star was his own son when he found out the kid's name was Luke SKYWALKER? Remember, Vader knew Luke's name from the very beginning of the movie. He discovered it in-between STAR WARS and EMPIRE. You really think Vader needed the EMPEROR to tell him that Luke was his son? Come on! Plus, the Marvel comics, which are coordinated closely with Lucasfilm, did a whole storyline set before EMPIRE where Vader learns Luke's name, conducts an investigation, and realizes that Luke is his son, which then leads directly into EMPIRE. Those comics are considered canon. Obviously, the people creating them, along with the folks at Lucasfilm who approved them, see the situation the same way I do.

    That is interesting how George Lucas never said anything in the casting room do American Graffiti or A New Hope.

    Wrong.
    Vader ALREADY KNOWS it before the movie even begins.
    It's right there in the CRAWL, he's obsessed with finding Skywalker.

      ... maybe sub-consciously he felt it ... but that was the kid that blew up his death star and was strong with the force ... that seems like enough to get obsessed with him. And he does sound surprised when McD drops that on him. So I'll buy that he didn't know at a conscious level.

    While I was hoping to hear more about *Irvin Kershner¹* (perhaps even *Gary Kurtz* as well), I suppose this is what you get when you allow the conversation to simply flow. It goes where it goes. Glad to have watched both parts. They were very enjoyable.

    I always felt like Han and Leia’s kiss represented the midpoint of Han’s arc. While it’s true he’s consistently saving everyone’s neck, it’s important to note that he has a motive that exists beyond his want of being a swashbuckling hero. This is defined by actions that exist beyond the need for immediate action. Of course he SHOULD go out and rescue Luke from being taken out in the Death Star trench. Of course he SHOULD go out in the snow and make sure his friend isn’t gone. But when the stakes are taken away, what choice will Han make? He’s continually made it clear that he has to separate himself from the rebellion in order to get back to his old life (and of course to avoid a bounty), but this is the first time he’s taken a leap when no one was taking score. His relationship with Leia is the first true moment he chooses a person over his own self-interest. He won’t be known as a hero, he won’t get a medal, and no one will be any wiser of his actions, yet he chooses a course of action that puts him in the life of another person. He’s fallen down the rabbit hole into something deeper than intergalactic conflict or debt payments, and that raises the emotional stakes of the character for the rest of the film? Will he continue to stick by her side? Will he continue to act as a protector? Those are questions that are subconsciously studied for the rest of the trilogy! It’s the most important choice that no one references when talking about the heart of gold taking over the smuggler. (As you’ll notice, he never references leaving the rebellion after this moment. Maybe it’s not an important detail, but it does at least make sense to what’s going on in the scene)
    TLDR: Han’s kiss with Leia is the midpoint of his Empire arc as well as his trilogy arc

    I feel like Infinity War surpassed its major source of inspiration in one very key way. Sure most SW fans consider The Empire Strikes Back as the best of the trilogy, the best of any of them, because it's a more interesting, complex, darker story (none of which I can disagree with) but it doesn't truly work as a COMPLETE film. Which isn't to say audiences didn't come out of it with a lot of pleasure and fair amount of satisfaction, obviously they did. But you can take someone who doesn't know the SW universe, sit them down and have them watch Empire (even really w/o seeing Star Wars) and yes the ending has a climax, but it would be clear to that person there's more to come. The heroes take a hell of a blow back, but 'the game' is not definitively over yet. Neither side really wins, Vader gets a hold of Han Solo to impress his boss but his primary goal was to secure Luke, who gets away damaged, but plenty fixable. They're all even closing the film openly talking about what they have to do from that point to rally, just that it's going to take a ton of time and work to accomplish it. For as dark an overall ending that Empire is famous for having, the VERY ending actually still has a decent amount of hope.
    Whereas with Infinity War, while Marvel fans knew full well that End Game was coming before they even got in the theater, but again, employ the same kind of setup. You can have someone that knows nothing about the MCU and have them watch it, and if you told them there's nothing that comes after, that's believable. Not very common in Hollywood, but it does happen. It's an incredibly dark ending, but it 100% works as a complete story. You have one side that's trying to accomplish a clearly established goal, one side that's working against that, and the goal is very fully accomplished. It just happens to be the villain (David Fincher, for one, has already achieved this to much critical acclaim). That neutral viewer could have every reason to think that 50% of living things is stone cold gone forever. The hero characters (that are even still alive) close the film not having the first friggin clue on how to possibly regroup from this, they're not even close to beginning to figure out how. Even for each of the heroes that weren't in Wakanda where Thanos makes the climactic stand, those who were knew the others were out there fighting in their own way somewhere and somehow, but once the Snap goes, even whichever ones weren't dusted at those far off locations, Cap and the remaining others have no reason to think there's anyway they'd see them again. Hell, even if you do want to try and factor in End Game, the beginning only further reinforces the state of things. Sure it's only 3 weeks later that the heroes already on Earth get to have Tony, Rocket and Nebula back, and they get all pumped up at what they see as the first chance to do something about it, but uh oh. Turns out Thanos was VERY thorough in his plan. He did literally everything in his power to try and make sure this couldn't be reversed. A chance shows itself, but they don't know that for 5 more years, when some of them having since accepted what life is now like.
    edit: while Star Wars may be the movie many consider to be no higher than their 2nd favorite in the franchise, it also is a COMPLETE movie. It doesn't matter that Darth Vader clearly survives, his death wasn't the goal, the Death Star's destruction was. And the story as it's told, one would have any reason to believe that dealt a big enough blow to the empire from which they couldn't really recover.

    He says that "this is a reveal at the midpoint for the villain." However, earlier in the movie when they spot the rebels on Hoth, Vader says, "That is the system and I'm sure Skywalker is with them". Unless Vader couldnt make the connection between the quite uncommon last name then I don't think this is a reveal. Not to be too nitpicky lol

    The Original Empire Strikes Back is a near prefect movie. The 1980 version should be preserved. Irvin Kershner's cut deserves to be seen the world over. And not just as a bootleg fan project. Lucasfilm should release a restored and remastered official version. On Blu Ray, 4K and digital. Mark Hamill also should get his own Disney plus Star wars series about Luke. A Jedi Academy series would be fantastic. Getting to see Luke as a Jedi Master after Return of the Jedi is what i always wanted.

    But Luke isn’t pure when it comes to politics and the Empire at all. In Obi-Wan’s hut, he says “It’s not that I like the Empire, I hate it, but there’s nothing I can do about it right now”.

    You're wrong about Rocky. The character does not end where he started. He starts as a perceived bum boxer, with little respect, a loner who earns money working for a loan shark. He's a nobody. After 'going the distance' with the greatest Heavyweight champion of all time and the most famous, he earns respect and during this journey wins the love of Adrian. That's all he wanted was the love of this woman and respect. Yes, he's still in Philidelphia, he didn't become a millionaire and is still the Rocky character. But he's earned the respect of people who thought he was a joke like Apollo Creed, Mickey, the people of Philly, the Media and has a lot more self worth because of this. For that moment he shocked the world and became a somebody.
