This is exactly what an information video should be: Great points, concise (!), and easy to watch. Tim, I can't overstate how much you help the guitarist community.
I NEVER watch these types of videos. But I always watch your content, mate. I trust every word that comes out of your mouth. You're a killer player with killer chops and you know what you're talking about. Thanks for the advice!
Great idea on sitting wearing the guitar strap. I have horrible posture playing while sitting down and this tip is awesome. By the way, Tim has the greatest tone I've ever heard. I dare say the best living guitarist and he is so nice to share his knowledge with us.
Thanks for addressing this, Tim. I found out early on that proper posture pays great dividends (along with wearing hearing protection). Several decades ago I found that sitting with the guitar hanging naturally around my neck, and wearing it slightly higher pretty much put an end to any overuse injuries. I also switched to lighter gauge strings, and trained myself to keep my entire upper body as relaxed as possible. I’m now in my 70s. After hundreds of gigs, I continue to play pain free.
Excellent tips that everyone should know and do! A lot of what you shared are things I always try to communicate to my guitar students to varying degrees of success, but you've said it in such a clear way with excellent examples thaat you've inspired me to rethink how I explain these topics to be as clear and inspiring as you are. Thanks for being so willing to share your knowledge and experience with all of us!
you teach so many habits that at first may seem subtle but are very important. I love that you brought up the string gauges, I use .085 .12 .16 .24 .34 .48 which is a combination of a set of 8s 9s and 10s and it changed my playing tremendously once I figured out that I did not need fence post for guitar strings. also the way you hold the guitar, another thing that I struggled with while I was younger but have now embraced and makes things so much easier. I appreciate you and your knowledge so much Tim. Great video my man.
Your "Keep the Motor Going" tip caught my ear (and eye). I've been making a real effort to clean up my strumming hand. I have been playing for four years and have paid little attention to it and it shows. You said it is ok to pause the movement on occasion. This is not what we hear normally. Most instructors tell us to keep that strumming hand going. At 60, I know that when I try to keep my hand moving, I start to fatigue mid-song. But you gotta stay on time. Maybe in a future video you could expand on this cocept? Thanks Tim, your video always provide great insights and inspiration.
After long days working construction, I would play guitar lying on my back. You play not being able to see the fingerboard. I found this to be very beneficial.
I keep a Tumnus Dlx on the edge of breakup. I play light, it's clean, and when I play harder, it breaks up nicely. I will stack it with The Dude and it sounds amazing.
I like your Videos, there is a lot of profunde information of a Pro Musician. I learn to play Jazz Guitar, but your advices are very useful for all guitar styles. Merry Christmas Mr.Tim Pierce.🎄🎇🥇
I love you Tim. There are not enough superlatives to describe your talent and accomplishments. But don't be a grown man wearing a beanie inside. If you're cold turn on the heat.
Playing with a strap while sitting is a Godsend. I found I was getting terrible back pain every time I played my guitar, and it was because I was hunching over. I'd play for 10 minutes, stand up, and cringe at the pain. I started using a strap and the problem pretty much disappeared.
Always wonder if just playing to you favourite tunes would help and in a way yes it does but you expanded on that to add to the backing and then a melody on top which is the way to improve your voicing and musicality’
I am in my mid 50's now and I cannot bend 10's anymore without pain that takes me out of the groove. I tried getting used 9's for about a year but I always go too sharp which gets annoying. THANKFULLY, someone thought of 9.5 sets which I find to be the perfect compromise right now. Less pain, less going sharp. ANother couple years and my hands might get even weaker and 9's will probably be right for me then.
Man i hear ya! I'm 75. Still playing but the left hand is so much weaker. Extended practice just wears it out. I've always used 9s. I can still bend but chords is where I'm weak. God bless you. Keep pickin!
@@bennybenulis9313 Yessir, its never easy is it? Thankfully I started on acoustic lights so they are still good for me. Acoustic extra lights sound so anemic I'd never like that.

Tim is a legendary player, but also really articulate and a great teacher.

Not only do I love the technical advice Tim gives, it's great to watch him play, because he SMILES the whole time!
Thanks as always for the great info. Best of the season to you.
Same to you!
9-46 is where it's at IMO. More tension is always appreciated on low E.
Agreed. That's what I use now too👍

Did I miss the video where you talk about that blue fender !!! The first guitar! That is sick!!!
i started playing guitar at 13 with 10 threw 46 but changed a year later to 9 threw 42 and now 60 still using them
You are so great ... ♥
Hello from london
Hello, you are first thanks for the comment :-)
@ could not think of what to say love the channel mate if your ever in London
Pardon me while I drool on myself as all of Tim's guitars go by. :)
It’s very impressive how You can go from extreme aggressive bursts straight back to being calm in the blink of an eye.
Don’t bring guitar up to neck, ok got it! 😂
Love your vids, Tim. And your courses too!
I'm glad you're enjoying the channel and the courses!
'I can be on my laptop, be on the phone, be in the backyard'. Nice.
Stevie Ray used 13' gauged follicles,
p.s, this is one of your most helpful shorts Tim
Great video tips! I lost count on your guitars 😅.
Agree 100% with tip 1. You need to play along to songs.
I had to go down to 8's just because of the pain in my left hand. Now I can continue to gig pain-free.
Love these tips! What suitcase did you find that your Strandberg fits in?
edge of break up question, I have an 80’s Fender Super Champ, its a 15w tube amp, is it the input stage or master that I should push up to get that?
I love you Tim. There are not enough superlatives to describe your talent and accomplishments. But don't be a grown man wearing a beanie inside. If you're cold turn on the heat.

What is that yellow t-style guitar? Looks awesome!
What thickness do you use Tim?

My amp is a DR103. There is no "edge of breakup" unless I'm killing local wildlife. :)
Totally unrelated but is that a Sansui Reverb amp you have back there?
Hey! I'm a professional amateur and I resemble that remark
Off topic: I watch more youtube ads when they are music related. And short. And rock. (:
I fkin love josie
I'd say the input is a bit tight to lay down with but maybe that's just me😮
If you were ten years older you would have been behind a famous Steely Dan solo.
These 10 pro tricks are great. Why not make them "1" louder and go to 11?
Si, El Guapo. You have a plethora.
Love that movie! Lol
What is that pick you’re using?
