    Just watching this back, and it sounds like I said "bron medal" hahaha. That's supposed to be bronze medal, of course.

      onaretrotip I love the second game so much. really feels like a world I would happily live in. I worry that the 3rd instalment will feel dated now. I hope not

      I can't believe I'm playing the Dreamcast again after quite awhile (took 15 minutes to set it up from unplugging the Gamecube- coz' I've been trying to beat which I believe is the last boss for almost a year now, lol).
      VGA + Flat PC Monitor w/ .20 dot pitch + 480p with Shenmue 2 (good thing I organize all the saves into the SEGA 4MB switching memory card- I wish it had an LCD. I think I'll back up Shenmue saves into it's own VMUs coz' it's special, the grandaddy of all modern open world games) is almost heaven. At this level of sharpness (.20 dot pitch) t's probably like playing on a BVM already.
      I'll use the Pomodoro Technique which I highly recommend to everyone (it's timer heavy) to get work done and that secret thing on the video. I forgot where those people are located but there's nothing like a Dreamcast controller (although not ergonomic, it's still look good- it looks like a space starfighter, also, the Mazinger Z of consoles coz' of the VMU).
      Thanks. Pray I get to do that duck secret and other secrets. It's sometimes a very hard game.

    I remember looking at the codes for this game online back in 2000, not even owning the game. Was mindblown when it mentioned “when you go to work”. Bought it, loved it.

    Shenmue is a very special game. Even today, I still loved the game like it was way back in 1999. Having the HD version is a god-send restoration of the classic masterpiece .

    Great video mate. Shenmue is by far my favourite Dreamcast game. It just drew me in like no other game at the time. I will always remember how happy I was when I realised it was possible to play the arcade games in the arcades and the forklift racing at the end of your working day was another highlight for me lol. New some of these facts but not all of them. Really enjoyed this one. (Colin from LTR)

      @SevenDeMagnus 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Will make time for Shenmue 2 again. I guess it's still saved on the VMU. It's surprising, there are still secrets in there. I thought I'd really finished the best of all open world games (the most that make you feel epic compared to GTA, Fallout or Elder Scrolls). It's like their Konami code. I wonder if there are anymore secret on Shenmue 1 and 2?
      I think Susuki should also build a Dreamcast version for Shenmue 3 coz' that's easily a 1 million to 2 million (coz' those who bought it will buy two versions) market for them. People would really want all 3 on the Dreamcast, using the Dreamcast controller. All they have to do is lower the resolutions on their PS4 version (it could be in many MIL disks or GD-ROM which they can easily request with SEGA just for them)- they don't need to worry about facial expression coz' that's what fans are used to- stoic expressions. I'd be terrible if Ryo started talking and reacting like Sonic did and being too expressive, lol. Thanks.

      @SwitchRetroGaming 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, there's the interview that I put up th-cam.com/video/mmXVco0Bkyk/w-d-xo.html and Yu is quite clear on the cost, but also in Dreamcast Mag issue #17 March 2001. SEGA Producer Kats Sato also confirmed the $70 million costs. It's not that big of a deal for a game in development with 200 staff for 5 years. I mean FF7 cost Square $40 million and that was in 97 on the PS. I know Yu has since tried to play down the cost, but that was because he was desperate for funding for Part III and IV.

    Oh man just like me, went to a friends house saw the freedom and mindblowing graphics. Crazy how open worlds are taken for granted, amd stale in many instances. Wonder if I'll ever experience this wow factor for an open world ever again. Ha forgot you could play some arcade classics too, remember the toy machines. Ace video and lovely memories; handy as I don't know much about the second really. Had it for Xbox but it always froze after the first cut scene. Is 3 out this year or what??

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, yeah the open world was just mental back then, it's hard explaining that to young people today. It's like when I try to explain how big a deal the original Game Boy was, like WHAT?... YOU CAN CHANGE THE GAMES??? Hahaha we were used to playing LCD games like Game & watch where you bought it and were stuck with the one dedicated game, so having interchangeable carts was just mind-blowing.
      Nah, I honestly don't think we will ever see huge jumps like that anymore, each generation seems to be more and more similar to the last.
      I'd be very surprised if we see 3 this year mate.

      In case you don't know and may see it. 1&2 got remakes, Steam for PC, PS4, Xbox. You can play both now. Shenmue 3 confirmed out on 27th of August 2019. Less than a year now. He needed to do it. It's still a work in progress, and he doesn't have a millionaire donating to him like SEGA used to have. I think he has 10 times fewer people working on it now, even with an Indian company designing some of the misc hundreds of characters. I get him, he doesn't want cookie cutters walking the streets. If it takes a year, let him use a year.

      You have to try very very hard to run out of time. The only doable way is to save at the sneak point, and fail over and over. And even that would be long and hard. People only do it to see the bad ending.

    i first played it on a set of copied discs i got from a middle aged supertechgeek dude in the neighbourhood while at University.. so you can imagine i had plenty of time to sink into it in between all my fervent studying.. ahem.. ;)
    this game is central to possibly the very worst skullduggery to ever hit the gaming industry when Peter FUCKING Moore basically used it as a makeweight to get a job at microsoft.. stealing it from the dreamcast and giving it to bill gates by not releasing the game in the US when we worked for sega, only to have it as a US 'exclusive on the xbox around the time he went to work for them. despicable..
    oh... also.. great vid man.. very nice work.

      shenmueso basically the exact same thing Sony have done with shenmue 3 doing a scam Kickstarter then Sony comes out with that they are part founding the game with it's marketing and development they basically screwed all the shenmue fans who don't own a ps4 but I guess it won't See the ps4 my guess is it's going be a release game for the ps5 if it is out in 2019. As for the "stealing" shit that was a expensive theft cost to port it over knowing the dreamcast was dying and it wasn't a US exclusive it was EU aswell

    • @shenmeowzo
      @shenmeowzo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Staffs Woodsman neil that's not what happened imo. sony never owned or controlled the license, sega gave it to Yu Suzuki but were unwilling to fund it, Sony were also unwilling to fund the entire project but announced *from the start* they would help with marketing and converting the game onto ps4 (it's being developed on PC initially). Suzuki retains complete creative control this way, but crucially Sony never had the rights to it or the inclination to fully fund it. so the kickstarter was legit.
      Peter Moore didn't care about the xbox having a small install base, he was just trying to secure his own job there. a complete turd of a man.

    • @castleladpaza76
      @castleladpaza76 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      shenmueso Sega gave to license to shenmue 3 to complete the story Suzuki doesn't have to license to shenmue 1/2 that's why people want a remaster to get the Sony fans who have never play a shenmue game and it was the worse Kickstarter imo because they didn't even go the PayPal way unless it changed after that's why I didn't back I will never trust the Japanese with bank details as they are the highest in bank fraud even till this day and and with Sega announced that they are coming back with there catalogue of games in the next few years I can see shenmue 1/2 being in that line up well I can only HOPE.

    • @shenmeowzo
      @shenmeowzo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you're right Suzuki doesn't have the rights to the first 2 games, if Sega want to do anything with it, they should get HD remasters out before the new game drops to capitalise on the renewed interest. They did add paypal later on and you can still back the project and get rewards now, via their dedicated 'slacker backer' web page. - shenmue.link/order/?en
      i shouldn't worry about the money, this aint some back-alley job, this is the god of Sega games, he aint gonna screw us over, believe. :)

      onaretrotip I think it's because Sega own them now not the creator and shenmue 2 is part owned by Microsoft I think. Think that's why they did a scam Kickstarter then after told people don't are doing the marketing and paid towards the development but every gamer knows how Sony works typical Japanese company they are the dirtiest in the business like what they did with street fighter

    I think Shenmue was and still is MEGA influencial in open world games., you can see some shenmue even in Witcher 3., many compare it to GTA but NOPE, Shenmue is actually an adventure game more close to what Quantic Dream has been doing., actually the Dreamcast has the very first Quantic Dream game "Omikron" which is very close to what Shenmue did., is all about adventure., the only thing that Suzuki missed that later games added was the "choice selection options"., of course there are different out comes in Shenmue but you don´t have the options like in Quantic Dream games or even the wheel of decisions of Mass effect., Shenmue is NOT close to Yakuza, Yakuza is more like an action RPG., shenmue is really an adventure game with fighting mechanics

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, definitely a huge influence on open-world games. For clarity - I was saying that Shenmue is the spiritual successor to Shenmue, but not that the gameplay is similar.

  • @SevenDeMagnus

    Hi. I would bet, Shenmue 3's ending would be, like Tomb Raider 2015: Shenmue 1 and 2 would be the path for him to become Akira. This would tie the Virtua Fighter with Shenmue as a kind of prequel, Akira's formation. God bless, Proverbs 31

    • @dodesskiy1
      @dodesskiy1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well what do you think Hazuki Tradition meant? His coming of age gift was a sword hand guard. You see his father practice with a Katana. In fact that's how you learn Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Hapkido, Aikijitsu. They came from moves with a sword, just redone empty handed. That's why those arts work so well, no praying mantis, no crane stances. Everything was very practical, because it was taken from combat. I think it's a shame that Suzuki wrote Ryo going to China to learn the real martial arts. Or his father being shown up by Lan Di that badly. I hated that. It's one thing if they fought, both hit each other, both used holds, and Lan Di just happened to use this move or 2 that was better. The scene instead is not as well done at all. I think Ryo VS Guizhang was how to do it.

      That was their fault. It should have started with free battles, I've said that for years. But you ended up missing motor bike races, martial arts battles, fun arcade games. He was trying to impress with how much SEGA Saturn first, and Dreamcast later could do. It could have been still done, but it needed to start with many free battles.

  • @newmediadenmark_
    @newmediadenmark_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that people discovering it nowadays won't enjoy it as much, as we've seen it all before. But when it was released there's no question that Shenmue was hugely influential. So I'd disagree with you saying it's overrated, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to everyone today.
