Shouldn't the negative for the third person in plural bein accordance with the verb? For example, let's take the verb PUHUA. Shouldn't it be He EIVAT PUHU, instead of HE EIVÄT PUHU That is, with an "a", instead of an "ä"
Thanks for asking! With the verb “puhua”, the ending is “he puhuvat” (they speak). However, the negation “ei” is a separate word altogether, and it has only neutral vowels, which is why we use “eivät”. The ending is always -vät regardless of the main verb. Hope this makes sense:)
