4K・ Fools in the rain. Awa-odori in Tokyo Shimokitazawa.

  • Not a vlog, no intrusive faces or talking, pure Japan only.
    Actually I was planning Shinjuku walk but found news about Shimokitazawa Awa-odori event. Spent some time in the beginning looking around and for festival location.
    I like Awa-Odori in Shimokitazawa more than in Koenji. Koenji event is very regulated with noisy policemen and fences, dancers are too serious. Shimo-kitazawa is nice for its small streets, dancers are in front of you and very relaxed, you can even dance with everyone,
    Awa-odori - dance from Shikoku also known as Fools dance. en.wikipedia.o...
    Map www.google.com...
    2017/08/19 around 7pm
    Filmed in UltraHD 4K 60p with Lumix GH5 camera and Beholder EC1 stabilizer.
    Feel free to correct my English or suggest a video to film.

    Wow, I know I'm kind of late in commenting, but this has to be one of the most interesting videos of Rambalac, from a cultural point of view- because all of his videos are extremely interesting. I enjoyed the whole thing so much, that I searched about the Awa-Odori dance, it's origins and history and from what I've read, it goes way back to feudal Japan of the 12th century! I love that the younger generations keep these 1000 yrs old traditions alive, as I've seen many teenagers and very young children among the dancers. Thank you Rambalac for sharing this with us!

    You probably don't know that on that day, among the dancers and musicians, you filmed four people from France, invited by Takarabune, the troop in red (31:26). What a surprise to see four of my friends in one of your videos, I would have never expected that ! We are Tsunagari Ren from Paris, and this summer we will be back in Shimokitazawa with 13 people ! I hope you will be there too, let's enjoy the festival together !

    Red guys, from 31min, are called Takarabune (寶舟).
    It's one of the only professionnal group of Awa Odori in the world (99% of them are not) and perform every years in Europe, America and, of course, Japan.
    If you have any interest I their performances, please check their website, facebook or Twitter.

    I love to watch the Japanese people in these city walks. My heart warmed at the older lady with her hand on her man, him giving her support. There is a difference with women on the street in the US and there in Japan. I can't quite figure it out, but I think part of it is the lack of pretense of the Japanese women. The young couples, for all the talk of lack of intimacy by some commentators, seemed comfortable and very much together. This all was evident on my recent trip to New Orleans Louisiana. There were a fairly large number of Japanese on the street that were obviously tourists. Maybe just me but I do see a difference as i was able to compare. A general example is the way people react in your videos when they discover they are being filmed. When people discover they are being taped in the US it can be very different (once again, generally). As a news photographer/producer I've learned to watch reactions of people on tape. Watch the occasional Caucasian especially in this crowd, you'll see. Anyway, great video. Thanks.

    It's really cool to see not only so many shops, but how different and interesting they are. Where i live there are a lot of closed down shops, and the high street is dominated by take-aways and betting shops, it's a huge difference.

    The fading light and glowing warmth of the street lights under a canopy of clouds, makes this clip especially moody, while the waiting bowl of hot udon puts a spring into the steps of the harried office worker. Although the attire testifies otherwise, this clip puts a chill in my bones as I prepare for bed. Indeed, the fading light. Goodnight.

    These areas in the videos remind me of some historical sites in Toronto like the Distillery District and Yorkville: Many pathways where both pedestrians and vehicles are sharing them. We have most roads lined with raised sidewalks for walkers.

    youtube recommended this video to me (after I watched some of Rambalac's most recent videos) and it's kinda surreal to see the difference. You can see most of the faces of the Japanese people here and there are a LOT of people (though considering there is an event here)
    I am hoping to see this kind of lively streets again.

    Questions for you:
    Did you ever feel strange filming everything all the time with your (probably) big camera-setup? All the people looking at you often enough.
    Are you japanese, if not where are you from? (And if you didnt grow up on in japan, how did you get there).
    Just curious! :)

    • @Rambalac
      @Rambalac  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I do feel strange, but it's better to feel strange than stay at home without good motivation to go outside. It feels much better when your walks get useful not only for yourself.

      there was a non-japan drummer some where around 32min and i remember seeing another dancer I think some time before that. From what I understand, never having been to Japan, but reading a lot and watching many bloggers, Japan is very open and loves to share their culture. I've known other festivals where a non-Japan person who lived locally help to carry a shrine for a festival, and those things are really heavy.

    A sentire questi ritmi ripetitivi ed ossessivi, seguiti da movimenti di danza, anch'essi ripetitivi ed ossessivi, viene in mente un commento ovvio: Di come i ritmi ed i movimenti del corpo, siano espressione della capacità e varietà celebrale dell'uomo; confrontate ciò che abbiamo visto in questo video, con la musicalità e l'espressione del corpo, sempre in riferimento alla strada, del popolo brasiliano; in questo c'è la fissità del pensiero, nell'altra la più alta espressione e colore della fantasia.

    I found your channel by accident, but honestly NO other walk-through video channel does this as good as you. You take (by-far) the best routes and have the best pace and the best camera angles. I love the bit-rate of the GH5 and I'm glad to see someone actually filming on a proper DSLR (micro 4/3 is plenty good) rather than a shitty DJI osmo or their iPhone. So happy to have found this channel! Gonna sub now :)

      Have you tried using an external battery source?

    • @Rambalac
      @Rambalac  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      On gimbal? And they are not reliable because dont provide battery level, so if it runs out video get lost.

    • @ArsensMusic
      @ArsensMusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could attach this to your GH5 and then put it in your backpack or other bag depending on the cord length: " Power Plate DV-7.2-GH2-GH5 "
      Maybe even somehow attach it to the gimbal or the camera.
      It works with the GH5 and it even shows battery level. Lasts for about 5-8 hours with the GH5 filming in 4K I believe. I just don't know how the gimbal would work with the DC adapter wire since it would dangle I suppose. I know this is probably not the best solution, but its just something I found. I use the 2 handed Ronin Gimbal stabilizer and never do long shoots for more than an hour so I guess I can't be much help. Hope you figure out a solution though!

    I found my true love, not any particular person, but an entire culture of happy, relaxed but dedicated people. I almost started dancing in my living room.

    Fantastic video! Love the tyko drum beating, the sounds of the flutes and the chanting. This is one of the most emersive videos I've ever watched! Thank you sir!

    This is so good. There is nothing but the pure streets. No intrusive music, no talking, just what it is... a walk.

    Your work is amazing. I try to tell everyone about this channel. I would love to take the walk around concept to where I live, but I don't think it could work like it does in Tokyo. Tokyo is vast and yet intimate. A surprise is found around every corner.

    Who's more foolish? The fool or the fool who follows him filming other fools in the rain?

    That was great! I thought I would just watch a few minutes, but I watched the whole thing. I couldn't stop! Hayaccha yaccha!!
    But who are the dancers and performers? Do they organize just for this festival once a year?

      Can not say for sure, but think they are some Awa-Odori or japanese culture clubs from different places.

      PhiloYT1 Awa odori originated in Tokushima, the town was formerly called Awa. In late Aug when Japanese welcome back their ancestors for Obon, the people dance and celebrate (like the "day of the dead "). Check out Awa odori in tokushima, they have over 80 troops

      Strange, I thought I posted comment here.
      I think dancers are from local awa-odori or japanese culture clubs around Tokyo or maybe even further. That people can participate in other festivals.

      Most of them are locals. There is, usually, one group per city.
      Shimokitazawa is special as it's very famous but, instead of Koenji (which is the second biggest Awa Odori festival in Japan), you can find more 'originals' and not 'official' groups which are not classified 100% traditionnals.
      For your information, in Awa Odori à group is called Ren (連)
