@RobArnoldWorld as you posted this video my new strings came in literally today and I tried that trick you mentioned in the beginning and holy crap it was easier than the method I used for Years your video popped up at the perfect time thank you rob! I don't know if you've tried this but a trick I did with my alexi 600's floyd is use a bic lighter under it the floyd stays level and then I change the strings always learning more from you
Right on dude! Happy to help, and yes, if I'm taking off all the strings at once, I'll block the floyd too. I tend to use an old guitar cable, resting between the body and the saddle screws. @@Gothguitarist
You nailed it again Rob. I love all your 'on the work bench' videos. They are informative, thorough and entertaining. Ive been doing my own setups for well over 20 years. Watching you do yours is very relaxing and enjoyable. Thanks!

These videos are hands down the best on TH-cam. I’ve learned so much about guitar setup, string changes and maintenance from you. I haven’t had a floating bridge in years so you can guarantee this will be getting a few replays when I pick one up soon!
Watching your videos have helped me maintain my floating bridges quite a bit thank you for being god tier at walking people through this process it helped me a lot with issues I had with floating bridges
Hey Rob Rick here. I like how you rap your strings at the tuner. It really doesn't matter much since you have a locking nut as long as you get a couple good wraps I feel like that's fine with a Floyd. On a hard tail my first rap goes over the top of the hole and then I bring it back down so that it cinches the string if you follow. Then I get three wraps below the hole but I like to have one over the top of the hole so that it crosses over the initial first wrap That way the string is locked on. That's with a hardtail bridge which I play occasionally mostly at home and in the studio. But I like playing with a Floyd live because I am the lead player in my band. I really enjoy how you have the whole facing you and you actually do a 3/4 wrap around the post so that it's already started and then you pull the string adjusting your length. I recently have started doing it a different way by putting the ball end of the string up by the tuner pulling that tight against the tuning peg when I get to the bottom I run them all the way to the fine tuner and cut them off there That seems to be the perfect length then after I lock it down I end up getting about two and a half wraps up top if you follow. Great tutorial. Love your stuff man. It's not that I don't know how to do it I just like watching and see how somebody else does it I have my own little pet peeves as well I like the way you do it You've obviously done it for quite a while I think I'm a bit older than you I started playing in 1982 took a little time off from about 95 to 2005 to raise my children and now I'm back in it full time we're gigging a few times a month. Thanks again bro Peace ☮️

Always kind of been "afraid" of a guitar with a Floyd on it until I watched this and several other of your "setup" videos. You've got a calm, clear, concise way of explaining things. I've got several MIJ Jacksons with the Gotoh Floyd and an Ibanez with a Low Pro Edge now thanks to you. Keep it up! Thanks!!
Besides not having time, I really cannot understand why people don't spend more time watching this kind of content to teach themselves how to set up a guitar how YOU like it. It takes little effort to do some research and save yourself tons of money on getting setups done on your guitars. And people will have the argument saying they don't have the confidence to do it, but confidence comes with time. Great videos as always, Rob!
Love your videos Rob. We are all on a guitar journey right. I find your videos extremely helpful and thorough. Would love to see you with Chimaira back in Australia one day. Keep up the awesome content and you have a great year. Best wishes
This is awesome, thankful for everything you teach us. I always shied away from doing my own setup. But I’m not trying to pay someone for this. I think as a guitarist, I should know how to do all this myself. Allows me to become one with my instruments . Thank you brother you’re amazing
Rob, truly appreciate your videos. While I have watched numerous Floyd Rose setup videos, with the various shortcuts and whatever, I always appreciated yours because you made me truly understand what is going on. I use some of thr shortcut methods now, but I always know if they fail me, I can come back to your videos and get any setup sorted. My son is the guitar player (I play bass..well learning to play bass),and he has a good collection and I do his setup work for him and your videos to me are the gold standard. Thanks again.
Hell yeah man! I LOVE everything Ghost Reveries and beyond, and LIKE everything pre- Ghost Reveries. But my two favorite Opeth albums are Ghost Reveries and Pale Communion! How about you?
Hell yeah both of those albums are masterpieces! That truly is a tough question….might have to go Deliverance and Heritage! Heritage is criminally underrated. Sooooo amazing. Also, Definitely check out Storm Corrosion if you haven’t! Its Mikael and Steven Wilson collaborating and its also a masterpiece.
It's nice to see the actual string changing isn't so bad. I've always heard the joke "you need a degree in engineering to work on a guitar with a Floyd." It seems to be more you set it up once in the tuning/string gauge you want and then it's just the normal string changing process.
😂 I’m sorry! That’s totally me with the block method. Personally, I think either one is good, whatever a person is used to. But you’re right, the most important thing is to actually understand how the Floyd works so that no matter how you do it, you can account for anything that might go wrong. I need to make a video on it to properly explain it, but essentially the way it works is that if you have it blocked in a flush manner, and then you properly stretch and tune, when pulling the block out, everything will fall out and the bridge will pull up. But you use the claw screws to bring the guitar back into tune. Once the guitar is properly in tune, the bridge should be in the exact place you had it blocked in. Anyway, thanks for turning me onto Aurora DSP, I just bought the mammoth bass plugin as well. I really dig their stuff. I wish they made some mastering EQs and compressors. Hopefully they will one day!
Right on bro! I'd love to see your video! I'd love to hear what you think of Mammoth too! And they did tell me they have lots of cool new plugs on the way! So we'll see what arrives!
Never tried C#! I used to block the Floyds way back in the day, but now I love the ability to use the whammy bar. Although I'm not sure if you meant some what permanently, or just when changing strings.
Yeah I meant permanently and remove the locking nut so you can use the headstock tuners instead. Had my new Jackson soloist with emgs setup with 11-52 in drop c. Pretty comfortable. But I’m not using the bar and I prefer the brighter attack of C#. And find the fine tuners annoying. So I was thinking about getting it blocked off
Hello Rob! Very helpful video, always learning from you. I'd like to ask, if you didn't have a good intonation tuner had to get one, which would you recommend? I bought the tool that helps setting Floyd Rose intonation and I'd like once and for all the set up the intonation properly because it's driving me nuts lol.
Thanks dude! My go-to tuner is the Boss TU-3 you see in this video. I've been using and loving it for years! Check it out! Boss TU-3 Tuner: sweetwater.sjv.io/BossTuner And good luck with your intonation!
Every time Ive tried to do setups and string changes on a floating bridge, it always takes three times as long as any video I reference. People make it look so easy, but I still struggle years later. Fixed bridges only for me
I address that issue around 27:50 if you're interested in hearing that I have to say about that. The process does take a long time, but practice makes perfect!
@@RobArnoldWorld it's much appreciated. I ended up watching the whole thing when I posted that comment halfway through, and it's explained better than anywhere else I've seen it done.
My CE24's Floyd is sitting real flush ever since the last setup videos I was all over, thanks again! I ended up actually raising my bridge slightly as an experiment, cause I suspected my action my be a wee too low for my 8-38.. Might be time for a professional setup now XD oops! I heard you'll want a real straight neck with a gauge and action like that. Might be worth 1 more experiment before I pay someone to fix my handywork. In the new year, and I hope you enjoy yours!
Oh no dude, this guitar in particular is super light. It has a thinner body, and I think often times, it's the body material and dimensions that increase weight.
I am a bassist but i figured this would give some light into the setup process since they are both electric stringed instruments. I am trying to figure out what is going on with my truss rod, i think it may need professional help.
@@RobArnoldWorld Yes, helpful for sure. I am trying to correct an excessive forward bow. Thank you . The truss rod doesn't want to turn very far, that is the cause for my concern. I might apply some oil to it. If that doesn't work. Gotta consider sending it to a pro.
The truss rods are definitely tight, but they're meant to be adjusted. So I say keep at it. However if you're worried about damaging your guitar, which is possible, then sometimes yes, it is just best to take it to a professional. @@iamgribs
Not sure if I may asked you this Rob. I know that your tuning is always Drop C. But do you have any of your guitars that are in Standard E. My reason for asking is it would be nice to see you doing a string with standard E. Or is it because of the gage of strings that you are using.
Im a fixed bridge guy. When I was a teenager I had an ESP with a Floyd. I tried to restring it and let’s just say that I didn’t understand why the bridge suddenly collapsed into the body LOL. Never got a Floyd again.
I hear ya man, and Floyds certainly aren't for everyone. But please check out at least a little of this video, and check out what I say at the very beginning. Perhaps if you ever decide to give a Floyd another try, you'll have a new confidence in understanding what all's going on with it! th-cam.com/video/OpW3exj5HFo/w-d-xo.html
Rob when I'm playing through an amp sim and my studio monitors with a lot of distortion and gain, I get a lot of booming low end muddy bass even when I turn the bass down on the amp sim. I want to play through my monitors with gain and distortion but it sounds awful, suggestions?
There are so many things that could be affecting what you're hearing... It could be your listening environment. When you switch to headphones, does it sound much better?
Also, I talk a lot about listening environments, and studio monitors in this recent video. Especially towards the end of the video. You may find some useful information throughout! 👉 th-cam.com/video/gB9d7WXicdM/w-d-xo.html
Hey there big fan. Having troubles with a 17p for f on a 25.50 scale length. Wanting to go higher or even consider a wound third, but I’m worried bends will be a huge pain. What should I do? Need opinion.
As someone who prefers a wound G string, I recommend giving it a try! I've always used a 20w. But that goes nicely with 11-52 sets. So if you're using a lighter gauge, maybe try an 18w or something! And btw- I doubt you'd notice any undesirable differences with your bends. And if you do, a couple days of practice will help your hands become accustom to the slight increase in tension. It certainly won't be a huge pain. I promise!🎸
@ that’s honestly what I’m thinking about going to. I used the 18w in the past and I just love the feel of a wound third. I just started getting into bends like chuck berry and was worried the bending with that g would kill me. Right on! Thanks dude! Ps, please do a guitar tutorial for resurrection. I have yet to find one 🫡🫡🫡🫡
I bought my Jackson MIJ dxmg back in 2010. Didnt have much issues with the licensed jackson floyd, now it doesmt stay in tune. Is it time for me to change to a better floyd, or must I be doing something wrong?
is there a reason to ever adjust the floyd rose height at the bridge? I just got a new 7 string and I am getting really bad string buzz around the 5th to 10th fret on the 7th string so I am wondering if the issue is at the bridge.
Yes! But I recommend watching this video first, and applying all you can from it. th-cam.com/video/ktiF2rysCW0/w-d-xo.html If then you're still not satisfied with your action, then you can begin to make minor adjustments to your bridge height. At least that's the way I think about it.
Most techs will set the neck first ,otherwise your following your tail and also no need to go stretching strings like mad unless its going to gig straight away or customer as everything will move in a day or so anyway and need to be tweaked again . I know everyone has a way, Checkout steve vai tech good vid.
I always find that 3 or more springs is too much tension. And when i reach tuning pitch i adjust the tension plate so bridge is zero pivot. Someone i know said they use 3 springs so stays in tune better. I've always used 2 springs and never once had a tuning issue. Electric guitar should have ease of bending strings and playing.
For the action adjustement it's better with your fingers on first fret and 18 fret and you check on 9 fret if the string are too close of the fret. Not just with the eye.
I'm a fixed bridger for decades. I tried tremolo for awhile, but then my metal tastes, tuning, and string gauges got heavier and heavier, and adding springs to the trem just wasn't working out, so I switched up. I play 8 string now anyway.
If you're new to floating tremolos, I promise this is not the method for you. No disrespect, but by chasing the tuning back and forth without blocking the bridge, you're more likely than not going to end up very frustrated. Again, no disrespect and it works for Rob, but there are other methods.

Thanks dude! And 100%! Here's a video demonstrating the same principles on a fixed bridge!

Boss TU-3 Tuner: sweetwater.sjv.io/BossTuner
And good luck with your intonation!
Right on- I do recommend watching this video first before you make your decision! 👉th-cam.com/video/ktiF2rysCW0/w-d-xo.html
Hey I'm in for reviewing topics thanks!@@RobArnoldWorld
And that's why all my guitars are fixed bridge.
Does the neck through make the guitar heavier? With the floyd rose on there I cannot imagine how heavy it must be.
Watch this video and you'll be all set bro! 👌 th-cam.com/video/ktiF2rysCW0/w-d-xo.html
@@iamgribs
Do you have any tips for baritone or could you do a video on it in the future im trying to make a baritone partscaster
Here you go bro! th-cam.com/video/VbgvnX0s7hs/w-d-xo.html
Not sure if I may asked you this Rob. I know that your tuning is always Drop C. But do you have any of your guitars that are in Standard E. My reason for asking is it would be nice to see you doing a string with standard E. Or is it because of the gage of strings that you are using.
Yeah Darren, I've definitely got guitars that I keep in E standard! I just can't remember if I've ever done a string changing video with one or not!🤣
@@RobArnoldWorldMaybe you should do one with your guitar
Which?@@619dar

@RobArnoldWorld it's difficult to say because the only headphones I have are corsair gaming headphones
Also for perspective, I take a skinny top heavy bottom 52-10 and trade out the 52 for a 56. Giving thought to beefing up the F and A strings though.
I bought my Jackson MIJ dxmg back in 2010. Didnt have much issues with the licensed jackson floyd, now it doesmt stay in tune. Is it time for me to change to a better floyd, or must I be doing something wrong?
I'd need to know more about everything you've got going on!
@@RobArnoldWorld Maybe I am not using the correct gauge strings for D standard. What would you recommend?
@@cacaloca5434 I'd personally recommend you try 10-48 for D standard.
how often do you typically oil the fretboard?
I honestly never have! I've just always used guitar polish.
is there a reason to ever adjust the floyd rose height at the bridge? I just got a new 7 string and I am getting really bad string buzz around the 5th to 10th fret on the 7th string so I am wondering if the issue is at the bridge.
Yes! But I recommend watching this video first, and applying all you can from it. th-cam.com/video/ktiF2rysCW0/w-d-xo.html
If then you're still not satisfied with your action, then you can begin to make minor adjustments to your bridge height. At least that's the way I think about it.
@@RobArnoldWorld thank you!!
Most techs will set the neck first ,otherwise your following your tail and also no need to go stretching strings like mad unless its going to gig straight away or customer as everything will move in a day or so anyway and need to be tweaked again . I know everyone has a way, Checkout steve vai tech good vid.
Skipped straight to the intonation part. I had no idea there were 2 holes for the saddle, i have a guitar i can now intonate properly lol
👍👍🤘🤘🤝🤝🤝

40 minutes, it take me all day to change the strings on one guitar. I had 3 i like Floyd Rose, but yeah is a hassle the fine tuning damn it 😡😡
Practice makes perfect! 🎸

Rob....
William...
If you're new to floating tremolos, I promise this is not the method for you. No disrespect, but by chasing the tuning back and forth without blocking the bridge, you're more likely than not going to end up very frustrated. Again, no disrespect and it works for Rob, but there are other methods.
Awful lot of love for Jackson lately 🤔🤔🤔
