Film Look recreation in DaVinci Resolve

  • Some month ago I remembered a blog post by Juan Melara. In the course of a discussion on the topic „movie look recreations“ in this “Lift Gamma Gain thread“, colorist and cinematographer Juan Melara „jumped in“ and recreated the look of “Midnight in Paris” in DaVinci Resolve.
    From this point on I got profoundly interested in the method „reverse engineering the grade“, and I started to experiment with it myself resulting in making this website on the topic with some additional points of views.

    well, as a newcomer to DaVinci I am intrigued. I don't do massive amounts of grading as it's not my source of income in any form. But it truly is refreshing to hear and see a voice of minimalism in the sea of flashy tutorials that show dozens of nodes for each shot.
    If we look back. For over a hundred years DP's had a light meter to guide them on set, maybe some push or pull on the negative, and in post there was printing lights and maybe leaving some silver on during processing. So if they could produce those beautiful images back then with those limited tools. Then we should probably be able to do quite a bit with only a handful of nodes.

      Thank you. I like to be called "a voice of minimalism in the sea of flashy tutorials". And I like your thoughts on that topic. 100% agree.

    Stefan, any kind of color adjustment in final (lift gamma gain) node being done? Or color adjustment in first step only?

    • @StefanRingelschwandtner
      @StefanRingelschwandtner  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      All color adjustments were made using mainly four nodes: Offset, Saturation, Contrast, and Lift Gamma Gain. For a deeper dive into this topic, please check out my blog post titled "The Idea Behind MonoNodes" on my website. Additionally, on my website, click on "grades" and you will see the node tree I used. If you have any further questions, feel free to email me.

    How do you get the still photo images into the right color space before grading and are you doing any color management?

    • @StefanRingelschwandtner
      @StefanRingelschwandtner  ปีที่แล้ว

      For the "First 12" I decided not to do any color management or CST transformation. The "behind the scenes" images are RGB. I was just concerned if there was enough information to work with. I go straight from A to B. For the "Soft 2 Strip" project I decided to use the Kodak 2383 LUT from Davinci Resolve and use a CST to transform to Rec709/Cineon Film Log first. Visit my website for more information.

    Do you think I could use your techniques for film emulation direct in fcpx with their color correction or even color finale? Or does it have to be node based?

    • @allenpayne9182
      @allenpayne9182 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should answer this question yourself. If you have the same tools (Saturation, Contrast, Liftg Gamma Gain, Printer Lights) in FCPX, you can do it in FCPX too. But I still wouldn't recommend FCPX for color grading.

    Hi ! do you know, if it is possible to generate an inverse LUT using a custom given look ? I normally use LOGtoLIN and then LINtoLOG in fusion to deliver comps but this time we were given a custom LUT and I need to comp elements in LIN and then deliver the final comp in log.

    • @StefanRingelschwandtner
      @StefanRingelschwandtner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It depends on the LUT. An Example: If you add a LUT which turns color into black & white you cannot inverse that. And also with colors you run into a lot of problems if you try to inverse it.

    • @parsec3d
      @parsec3d 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StefanRingelschwandtner Hi well in this case it is just grading, colors are still present , any hints on how to inverse a LUT?

    • @StefanRingelschwandtner
      @StefanRingelschwandtner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@parsec3d No hints. Just start by googling "inverse LUT" and you will find a lot of informations about it.

    why some nodes are hidden in your website, whats the point of this in that way though ?

    • @StefanRingelschwandtner
      @StefanRingelschwandtner  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The hidden nodes are akin to preview pages of a book, giving you a glimpse into my efficient grading approach. To fully explore what's inside each node, accessing my course will reveal the entire process.

    pls you can make some video tutorial for film look ?

  • @marinrealestatephotography
    @marinrealestatephotography 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video and the link to your site, Stefan. I will be honest: I really don't like the grades of the actual movies that much... at least not watching them here on youtube. Maybe watching them in a cinema they look better (since they don't have the youtube compression). but I like the ungraded BTS footage the best. I was looking at the "Call me by your name," grade on your website and the BTS shots look so much better to me than the actual movie final grade, IMHO. Maybe something is wrong with me????

  • @Quantum_TV
    @Quantum_TV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ok...but..can't you just shot match from a still and apply the grade, then adjust the intensity of the grade from the prior footage in the timeline? That's why easier than anything you've presented here.
