In this process I went from private lessons, to Skype lessons, to group lessons, to finally setting up my website (Guitar Playback) that represents 90% of my income.

@@aylbdrmadison1051 this is the second negative comment you've left on this video. Online learning isn't the same as learning 1-on-1 but it's not worse and it's definitely not rubbish. Learning from a course you can still get feedback, you can learn at your own pace, you can learn from home without going to a teacher's house, you have everything digitally saved and backed up and you can save a ton of money. This is coming from someone who's been teaching 1-on-1 for 11 years.

I've watched a bunch of your videos, and even if the video is on a topic I already have a grasp on, I find new inspiration within that canon, and other videos which touch on new concepts to me have given me some new creative avenues to travel down. Plus, even though you speak of the virtual face-to-face anxiety (which I also have), you present these lesson videos with what really comes off as a personal touch and a style of communication that makes the viewer feel as if you are teaching us directly. Great video David. I have only a couple of students, as I have an engineering business I really like also. I have also recently gone to recording short lessons. The main issue I have is organizing lessons better so that I don't reinvent the wheel for each student. I attribute it to time in that I'm "really an engineer, so that's where I spend my work time." But I think it's really just short-term laziness. In any event, this is great content along with your other videos too. So thank you!!

I teach guitar at home and photography classes. The idea of making photography videos lessons exclusive to people has been in my mind. Where people pay something to have access to the individual lessons etc. I should get down to work

How is he helping others More this way? Constructive criticism is one of the most basic principles that all teachers should be using and he proposes eliminating that aspect.
This is called "throwing out the baby with the bath water". :P
Taking 3 to 4 students a day and now reaching multiple guitarists a day, a week, a month, while still doing the work, is just ONE way, ONE guitarist, one teacher has found a way to maintain his passion to teach, learn himself, and give back. It is that simple, and also pay the bills. This is just his style, because he found his nitch. So, if you do not like that and prefer a one on one student teacher relationship, then go for it and do that. Criticizing his approach doesn't do anything but reflect that you are not getting his point. I actually like both approaches, I like learning off a video, but I also like the one on one as well. This is just showing you that there are different ways to do things.

This is really important! The majority of musicians are not aware that entrepreneurship is essential if you wanna be a professional. The same amount of time we spend learning to play, we should spend learning to sell and to promote ourselves.

Thank you so much for this. I'm a guitar teacher with sometimes up to 50 one to one students to teach in a week! It maybe OK for money of course but I'm often mentally exhausted and have no spare time to create as a musician. This has inspired me and given me some helpful direction to where I really want to be. it's true what you say about 1 on 1 teaching and it has it's place. and those who prefer it have plenty of access for it. just cause this guy has found a way a accumulate more students than a 1 on 1 teaching model doesn't even imply a reduction in quality. i studied with billy bauer, joe monk, etha fein, ron carter, larry riddly, bob cunnungham don arnoeand dennis sandole. mostly privet lesson. i got great information from all of them. this guy willaim, and amy nolte rick beato, and adam neely
( who i see you subscribe to ) are on the cutting edge of how things are gonna go for the foreseeable future. the people i mention teach principles that my former teachers didn't know about "the music business" for todays 'working musician' ('cept ethan-he gets it) any private student of any teacher who is not browsing the net looking for more idea's and solutions is missing an opportune piece of their musical education IMHO.

Excellent inspirational words. I also enjoy teaching. I have bought your course and Derryl Gabel’s. I’m on your mailing list. I actually was introduced to your channel via Darryl’s invite. What you are doing is awesome! I would like to no more about this education subject, more about essential steps and details to begin setup. This option of teaching has great potential. As myself and my colleagues have discussed also. I’m excited about the opportunities. Currently I teach private and groups. However in my individual case of circumstances, I have noticed the same limitations you have mentioned 🎸👌🏼
I teach online, and make video lessons. All my pre recorded video lessons are free here on TH-cam however I have a course in the works. I don't plan on stopping private one on one, but having a second source of income (well actually like 4th) helps keep business going. Not to mention it is a double sided sword. People see the prerecorded course want private lessons, and boom profitable. People take private lessons and want to see the private course, boom profitable. It is a great way to accommodate students in all sorts of scenarios. I also record every private session for students. Which they can then go back and review when ever they want. Some students have lessons going back 2 years that they can still access. Not only is that great for review purposes, but they can see the progress they've made. It helps keep them motivated in times of slow improvement.

Je me reconnais grandement dans le problème ... je donne des cours particuliers à Paris, ça marche très fort mais je donne beaucoup beaucoup d'heures de cours pour sortir un bon salaire ! Du coup plus aucun projet perso, une chaine TH-cam morte depuis plus de 2 ans, et une fatigue liée à l'énergie qu'il faut pour donner des cours particuliers de qualité. J'admire ton parcours et ton intelligence par rapport à l'époque dans laquelle nous vivons. Tu en utilises les outils parfaitement. Très bel exemple !!

Good video David, there is no substitute for being in control of your time. There are more important things than money. I'm not sure if you have seen the site, but Tony Polecastro used to do acoustic guitar demos on YT for a guitar store and did private lessons. He launched a lesson site (Tony's Acoustic Challenge) where the videos are standardized for all students but there is personalization in the communication, online forum, regular live video "hang outs", etc. His lessons are focused on bluegrass styles and he uses a reward system with points and achievements for advancing through the lessons. Basic marketing but it's effective. I think this type of "on-demand" lessons works well for many people.

I'm at a point where I've been teaching guitar for 11 years locally on the side of my full-time job. This video is really helpful as i still want offer value and teach but there just aren't enough hours in the day to do it all.

Lovely Video clip! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would love your opinion. Have you researched - Riddleagan Skillful Playing Remedy (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a great one off product for learning complex guitar chords and become a pro without the headache. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my old buddy Taylor at very last got amazing success with it.

Not alone with the phone thing. My dream job was originally working in the music library of a symphony just so I didn't have to do phone based customer support, I've since moved to a different department they feel is suited to my skill set (still technically unofficial, so being vague)

Hey all. So, I'm a Brit living in France and I'm trying to make a living from music. I've been following David since the early days of Jamplay.com and he's always been an inspiration to me with regards the quality of his teaching and his success with guitarplayback.com. I hope to one day have a similarly successful online presence, but I'm still very much in the private/Skype lessons phase. TH-cam videos are a slow burn and it's hard to stand out from the crowd, but I'm determined to make it work. Merci David for your passion and inspiration that you give me and, I'm sure, thousands of other players and educators.
Another great video. I moved over to the Skype/Zoom model of teaching during the zombie apocaypse and haven't gone back. It's ok, but very difficult to advertise. I've was hoping to sell albums online as an extra incomestream. I mention my album 'Hyperreal' in every youtube vid, but to date that produces a sale a year!

100% agree with you. It's great to see your teacher do something and explain it to you, but as a student you miss out on a lot if you don't have your teacher observe you do something, pointing out mistakes you might make as well as your achievements, etc. I suppose at least as a student you can choose what you want to spend your money on, generalised 'classes' or personalised lessons. Fair enough. As for me, I'm old school, I guess :)

Great video and great vision but I think part of your sucess with the website is due to the fact that you taught private lessons in first place. I feel the hardest thing nowadays is promoting your content, and already having a public is a big plus. I wouldnt mind another video on how to promote your teaching channel tho xD
An honest musician on net
Good video, David. I went to a Guitar Center earlier this year looking on the message boards to see if anyone was looking for a lead/rhythm guitarist like myself. There were absolutely no posts looking for anyone (like in years past) but DUDE, I must seen over 50 messages on a 3' X 2' pegboard advertising nothing but guitar instructors! Why? Everything you can learn about a guitar is online now....why waste your time with a private instructor!? Apparently these guys who still teach guitar haven't got the message yet.
Thanks for the video, David. I've been soul searching on teaching. I'm a trained classical guitarist (BA in music performance) and in the past year have tried teaching to make another source of income. 100% of my work is through performing. Concerts around the country, etc. I also play with a corporate wedding band. I love doing these.... For some odd reason, I never had any luck with the teaching. I did all the right things: Put together a great resume with great references. Hit a bunch of music stores (2 said "Yes, we want you!!! But when I followed up and tried to make things happen, I never heard back.....). Tried starting a guitar program at a private school, but got the run around from the director (was promised all these things would happen and over the course of a year only brought in one student for me to teach for little pay), and eventually quit (2 other teachers quit also). Emailed 100 churches for putting up flyers (20 responded and I got 2 inquires out of it but no students), and finally emailed a parks and rec department about starting a classical guitar program in the community. They were interested and wanted to hear more. When I returned their call, they never called back, said they would call the next day via email and never heard back since (even after a follow up). I'm starting to think that for me personally it's not worth the effort. I have a passion for performing, and even though I enjoyed teaching (when students did their "homework") I didn't feel like it was my "calling". Especially after seeing this video, I'm calling it a day I think with the teaching part. Any thoughts or advice? Have you seen these sort of problems before?
Also to point out, many of these ventures (minus the private programs) were offered lessons on electric and acoustic also... Not just classical (as I know classical guitar is not always in the forefront of people's minds). Even with the versatility combined with taking the initiative and putting in the effort, a brick wall was always hit.
Jeff Bianchi - Classical guitar One-to-one lessons are "cash intensive" and, to state the obvious, your target audience should be parents with little time and a lot of money, i.e. younger professionals (doctors, lawyers, etc.). They usually are inclined towards piano lessons, though. If you focus on young children, it can be "intro to music" and the basics on any keyboard. Residually, you might eventually build a clientèle with a percentage of the parents as chances are many of them will have some experience with an instrument. (this coming from an attorney-recent-guitarist father of four well rounded musicians)

I've been asked about lessons and have thought a little about it. but the thing I always think about is that I never had formal guitar lessons, so I am not really sure how to go about teaching guitar. I have shown some friends some things and they tell me that I am a good teacher, but I am sure I am not a typical guitar teacher. I say I never had "formal" lessons because as we all have done, I have watched others play and asked questions ever since I started playing. Sometimes someone would show me something here or there. We all learn from others. But I never had the formal lessons and as such I am weak on theory. I have learned more and more along the way. But I generally learn how to play something long before I learn what it is that I am playing, if that makes any sense. Do you think folks could benefit from lessons from someone like me?
Absolutely!
The most important thing is for you to be able to help students where they are at and to be honest. If you don't know, you go find out and teach it to them. I don't think students really pay a teacher for the knowledge - at least not entirely. Knowledge can be found for free, especially today. What they are paying for is someone who can encourage them, and that they can relate to. I've often seen me more like a "coach" rather than a "teacher". I hope that helps! :)
