How to develop unity? A good question indeed. Could you bring unity between the two when you say the other is unequal and children of a lesser God (hanthaba thak) in your local TV discussion openly? Unity should come from the heart. Like the pot calling the kettle black, isn't ours a story of a coalman confronting a chimney sweeper without knowing we are more or less the same? Any outsider will brush a Meetei and a tribal from Manipur with the same whisk of colour. Only here in Manipur some think they are different and above the others like a caste Hindu as depicted by Mulk Raj Anand in his novel "Untouchable" published in 1935 which was prescribed for MA English in JNU. The novel established Anand as one of India's leading English authors.
Haven't we failed to understand the English equivalent of the Manipuri word Yelhoumee (aboriginal) written in India's Constitution? A Supreme Court of India judgement dated 5th Jan 2011 states STs are descendants of the original inhabitants comprising 8% of India's total population. The remaining 92% are descendants of immigrants. Where is the Meetei between the two -- either original inhabitants or descendants of immigrants?
How come some vociferous Meetei professors of MU and their ilk who opposed ST demand tooth and nail have a common agenda with illegal immigrants in opposing the ST demand? Like the border fencing, who benefits when the demand is delayed? Have some of the Ojas been taken for a ride by our adversaries whose hidden agenda is open today?
Aren't we paying the price of ignorance and negligence accumulated over the years by becoming today refugees (IDPs) in our State? Aren't we like a group of political prisoners under house arrest confined within a space of 6% of the total unable to cross beyond Awang Sekmai? Could this be the idea of a resilient or resurgent Manipur? Like the last of the Mohicans, we'll be fighting endless hordes of infiltrators without any Constitutional safeguards barehanded.
