  • This is the first time driving the 1992 Chevrolet G20 Conversion Van after I bought it and had it towed home. My plan is to convert it to a camper van. Not stripping out the inside, but working with it.

    Congratulations on your amazing find! Last month, I bought a 94 G20. It was immaculate. The interior was spotless and the exterior needed only a good wash. It runs like a charm. Shockingly, it had the original 32,900 miles. But the part that really blew me away was the $1500 price tag! My last van had been wrecked and the insurance company deemed it a total loss, so I was beyond happy to find this treasure.

    Hay Bill: I love the tour of your city. For someone who lives in Western Canada where the oldest buildings are about 120 years old and there are very few of those left, the age of the buildings, the brick alley's and the width of the streets in your city stuns me. Not used to that at all but it was a real treat for me to see that. Nice that the van is running so well for you. It sounds like you are having a hoot with it. Enjoy!!

    Hi, Joe, I have a couple of thoughts for you, although you're already doing a great job with the van. I bought a little old truck many years ago, and it developed a vacuum leak. Rather than try to chase the leak, and replace one line at a time, I bought 15 feet of vacuum hose, and started replacing the lines. What I did was pull one line off, measure a replacement piece for it, and install that. Then do the next one, and so on. No worrying about when the next line would start to leak after that. And, since I did one at a time, I knew where it went, and didn't have to try to figure out where all those lines went. Like spark plug wires, it's far easier to replace them one at a time. Do your front seats swivel? If you're going to use the van for camping, that would be super handy. If they don't, you can find a swivel to add to them, for not a whole lot of money. I'd think you could easily find at least one, for the passenger seat, so you could turn it around when camping. It should be possible to find one or two at a local junk yard. That's a really nice van you have there, and as you say, the 350 is everywhere, and parts are easy to come by. They're also very reliable, when they are taken care of. And you are already doing a good job of that. I wish you and Gail many thousands of miles of happy travels. Linda and I send our best.

    Hey Joe,
    I'd try taking the calipers off and cleaning the pins that hold them on. Re-grease them with the hi heat grease (the parts shop should have that) and re-install them. Check your pads and make sure both sides look evenly worn. Replace if not. If that doesn't work, you may need a new caliper. The calipers move every time you step on the brakes and release them and these pins get all gunked up. That's a technical term by the way.

    • @StBernardAcres
      @StBernardAcres  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +lake bum I would have thought the same thing, but these are brand new pads and calipers. I put the grease on the pins before I installed the calipers. I'm going to check the rotors again.

    Thought I heard an exhaust leak when you were driving around town. If so, could be dangerous in winter with windows closed. Bad rear brakes can make it pull to left or right, the whole van body will move, while the front brakes will be felt through the steering wheel. Try to stay with factory parts for the sensors, I used sensors from Autozone or Advance for my '94 G20 van and both oil pressure and engine temperature read low. Looks like it is in pretty good shape for as old as it is. Best of luck

    Seems to be pretty nice. the brakes may need to be adjusted on the right side to be a little tighter. The old drum styles were a little particular about the adjustments. Or the left side may need to be backed off just a bit. Have fun and stay careful with it. Keep your AAA card handy. :)

    The only concern I would have with the engine is slop in the timing chain and it jumping a tooth with that many miles.Then you would be stuck someplace. I would replace it with a double roller timing chain and steel gears. I've had several of these vans and so has my son, he still has one with a new special hi performance engine in it.

      @@StBernardAcres I had a body shop look at mine because it's already leaking. I plan to have it fixed in the near future. He said he'd have to remove the windshield to repair. Clear flex tape to stop leak works wonders until then 😁 also the bushings in the front door hinges are going bad causing the doors to sag and not shut properly.
