    As a retired truck mechanic, I always thought Ford was one of the best engineered trucks of all, And Fords were one of the easiest of all trucks to work on because they were engineered that way. I always thought GMCs and Internationals were designed by engineers that hated mechanics.

    • @Mephilis78
      @Mephilis78 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I feel that way as a regular mechanic lol I think the idea with GMC is that they want people to go to "official GM mechanics" so they make it to where nobody else wants to work on them. Every newer vehicle is like that, btw. Even the Fords.

      I found the General fairly easy to work on

    • @4321grp
      @4321grp ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RJ1999x , As far as GMC's the General was not as hard to work on as the others, although one thing that made GMC's harder than other trucks was that the rear engine mounts were on the transmission bellhousing instead of the engine flywheel housing like other trucks. Also the fact that the Detroit engine, instead of being mounted level like most other makes of trucks, was actually tilted when it was in the truck.

    The LTL's were some of the best trucks ever built. Super heavy but also bulletproof, and lots of room in the cab as well. My uncle used to run two of them pulling tankers, one with a 350 Cummins and one with a Cat 3406B. Don't see too many of them with the woodgrain dash, that's pretty cool.

    Probably the best-looking truck Ford made was the ltl9000. Motor sounds good the door sound solid on your closing. Imagine that big grill polished, Big Texas bumper on the front and the radical paint jobs Ford used to have

    Judging from the sound, probably an old B model CAT. My first truck was a 3406B, wonderful engines. Despite the rot, the fact it has an undamaged hood and bumper will bump her value up for sure. That short wheel base and sleeper combo is hard to find, and one I would love to have. For $6900 I would have taken her home in a heartbeat.
    Still one of my favorite commercial trucks ever built. Cool find, thanks for the tour. 👍

    I'm here because I just saw one of these at the top of Pacheco Pass. It was pulling 2 trucks and the 3rd was a dump truck with a car in the bed. Engines, tires, equipment , all 3 cabs were full of stuff. All going export to Mexico. I was dumbfounded how well that old truck works.
    I imagined it would have a screaming Detroit.

    Have driven a bunch of these over the years. Some had 3406 CAT's, others had N-14 Cummins. Most popular transmissions in these were the Eaton-Fuller 8LL. If you don't know already, if you see a blue splitter on shift knob, it's not a 13-speed. Blue splitter means 8-speed with two deep reduction gears and it'll either be direct-drive "H" pattern, or an over-drive "U" pattern. Red splitter on shift knob with range selector below it mounted to stick is a 13-speed. It can be a single over-drive "H" pattern, or a double over-drive "U" pattern. If it is a Gray splitter in an older truck, it is an Eaton Super-10. In newer modern trucks, the Gray splitter with front range selector is an 18-speed. Older trucks had different setups than today's modern trucks. Not knowing which transmission is in each truck and shifting it wrong will severely damage transmission and destroy the drive train. If you are not sure, look for the shift pattern plate mounted in most trucks, otherwise take a picture of stick shifter and ask us old guys and we can tell you what transmission it has. This is a very long discussion topic so I'll cut it here because there are too many shift patterns to list here, I'd be all night.

    Hi, Just wanted to say that Opening the hood on a LTL is best done by grabbing the hood on one side near the fuel tank and lift, trying to open it from the front is the hardest way to open it, unless you have the weight to counter the 400 lb hood, skinny guys have a better chance on the side, just saying eh.

    Ford always made great looking tractors and out on the road they rode really nice on the highway real tough trucks. Bad shape I've ran trucks worse shape to that one boy you must have been fortunate never having to drive a really bad truck. The hood opens from the side you obviously haven't driven truck a hell of a lot but then it's old school isn't it.

    I have a 1987 Ford LTL 9000 with a CAT 3406B, 13 Speed Transmission, Hendrickson Walking Beam Rear Suspension and Rockwell Axles. This is a no rust California truck that was a Reliance Transfer truck that I ran for many years and now it has a 4,000 gallon water tank on it. This truck works perfect and looks great with polished Alcoa Aluminum Wheels, I get many admirers of this truck and they are truly amazed at the condition, we did repaint the engine after replacing the O Rings on the backside of the injection pump which really dazzles your eyes after muscling open the hood.

    Hopefully whoever bought that old girl is giving her some love and bringing her back to her former glory. Still for what she looked like and how nice that CAT ran, it's a pretty decent truck. One of the only Fords I actually like, along with the CL-9000 cabover tractors.

    Fun watching these American trucks..never saw these in UK/EU the Fords here are/were totally different. That hand throttle was standard fixture on an old 80's Scania 112 I drove for a few years though - seeing you set that was a blast from the past. Regards

      When I was a kid here in Finland, we had the Ford D-series and the Ford Cargo after that. Then Iveco ruined it and now the Transit is the biggest Ford we have here. SAD!

    I bought a new LTL 9000 sleeper cab with Cat power that had sat on the lot for almost a year without being sold. They offered me a great deal on it and just as I was going to sign the papers I stopped and said, as an owner-operator, I can't drive a truck with just one stack I got up and the sales manager said if it had dual stakes you will buy it? I told him, yes, and 2 days later I signed the papers on my new LTL 9000 with twin chrome stacks
