How To Make Multi-Column Documents In Pages

  • macmost.com/e-2009 You can create multi-column documents in Pages in either word processing or page layout mode. Using multiple columns in word processing is just a matter of a single setting, but you can adjust the columns as you wish. You can even have sections that use different numbers of columns. Page layout documents use individual text boxes that can be linked to form versatile columns. There are many reasons to use columns, such as to create a newspaper-style layout, wrap text around images, or fit long lists on to few pages.

    I came to your video looking for exactly this... But in the web browser. Do you have any browser tips or add ons to do the same?
    I have a 22" wide monitor, I use it for videos and reading/writing. But it's really bad to have to keep using the mouse scroll (or PgUp/PgDn or Vim keys) repeatedly to read articles and news.

    I enjoy the tutorials and have visited many in looking for something I do not think has been discussed. My question is how to set up a document where each page has a large main body column and a sidebar column. What I want to happen is that the text in the main body flows from page to page without adding to the sidebar column. My intention is to use the sidebar to add more detailed information to the main body of text on that page. What I was hoping for is to set up a template to do just this type of document. Thank you, Gary

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just use a Word Processing document, then change the margins of the main body of text to leave a lot of space on the left or right. Then add text boxes there as needed.

    • @garyschulte2388

    I'm trying to BALANCE the 2-columns on the last page of a 3-page word processing document in Pages 10 but so far, without success. I've tried inserting a SECTION Break after the last word of the document, hoping that I could then format this new section with one-column which word force the columns above to balance. However, when I insert this SECTION Break pages inserts a new page?! Thoughts or ideas please.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A section break starts an entirely new section. What you want is probably a column break. But as far as "balancing" goes, if this is body text then try inserting a rectangle shape the same color as the background at the bottom and make sure text wrapping is set to it pushes the text up. Then enlarge the shape as needed to push the text into even columns.

    • @carywilson6435
      @carywilson6435 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@macmost as I suspected... FWIW, in MS Word inserting a section break after the last word on the last page of a multicolumn document forces the text in the columns above to horizontally balance evenly. That said, I've found a klutzy workaround: insert an empty text box that reaches from left margin to right margin on the last page and adjust the vertical height accordingly. Thanks for your prompt reply.

    I have another column issue. I edit videos and I'm usually given a Word doc. with two columns. Right side is the script and the left side is for video instructions. You can work in either column without affecting the other column. It's like two completely separate pages on each page and you don't have to do return, return, return, etc. to get to where you want to be on the video instructions column. You can click anywhere in the column and the cursor goes there. I like Pages and it really bugs me that I can't figure out how to do this in Pages. I tried to insert a screen grab example but apparently that's not something you can do here.

    • @macmost

    What if you have two full document columns, the left in English, the right in another language paralleling the translation with the left columns? It seems I do have to go to convert page layout and do page by page? I did get good info off here too. But my main goal..... 10 pages of English in a left column, and it's Spanish translation in a right column remains unknown or a dedicated 20 minutes of convert/copy/paste/move/convert/copy/paste/move/convert/copy/paste/lol
