Smash that Subscribe button! My answer for today's question: Let me rephrase my original question so that I can provide a better answer: 'Should governments give everyone free **anything**?', and my answer will always be a big NO.
Ask yourself, how exactly can a government be capable of giving anyone anything free? When you ask the government to give you free products or services (health care, education, internet..), they have to steal the money from their productive population in the form of taxation. It's never truly free; someone has to pay for it.
With that said, your hands aren't exactly clean if you show up at the voting box and vote for free stuff. At the very least, indirectly, you're asking the government to act as your personal enforcer against your neighbors to demand payment for whatever it is you want.
Outside of the immorality of asking the state for free stuff, you also guarantee that a given market will be plagued with inefficiences when you ask a single entity (the state) to assume control. That's why corruption, bad customer service, lack of innovation -- are all synonymous with government and politicians. When you strip away competition and inhibit a truly free and open market, you squash all of the necessary elements to drive prices lower, increase innovation, encourage better customer support, etc..
If your internet speeds are slow or costly, it's not because of the private market. It's very likely because of government collusion and government-granted territorial monopolies given to internet service providers -- such as the case where I live in the US.
The answer is to encourage as much competition as possible, so that everyone can afford internet and not rely on government goons to mass confiscate money.
...And that's my tldr; rant of the day. ;)

Yes they should. They gave the Internet use out to the public (ARPANET, DARPANET etc etc). Internet access will foster creativity and ingenuity and thus increase the productivity for the nation and the world at large. However there are creeps out there that can and will misuse so there may be some regulations as to what is shared with the outside world (Easily said than done) . Kind of like a router on your LAN that keeps the traffic within the LAN if the source and destination are within.

Government should give everyone an equal chance and people will take it without hesitation. If everything cost money, people who have it in the beginning will always have unattainable advantage and they will have everything better. This is not fair. And people shouldn't compete, they should collaborate. The accent should be put on collaboration and sharing, instead on competition. Collaboration and sharing always win in the end. That's a common sense. Even a genius will do far lass than a team. And there is no too much geniuses in the world. This of course doesn't mean Internet should be for free, that's stupid.

      1. It's not free, it's payed by taxes. The same way you pay for roads, police, public schools, etc.
      2. Considering how US Internet service is among the worst and most expensive, and how you just lost net neutrality, your rant seems a bit disingenuous.

Asking whether the government should provide 'free' anything is a misnomer and whilst we do know that the government is paying for services via taxation, we are too quick to judge the efficacies of such an agent and forget that the idea of a government is the representation of the values held by the people. The absolute end of the spectrum for complete government control to the other end of the spectrum of completely free market are actually the same.
The ideal free market is full of competition that benefits the consumer through innovation and affordability; but that isn't the reality in many industries. When companies get very large, we get issues that we see now with anti-competitive behaviour, buying out the competition or coordinating monopolies on districts. They don't need to innovate nor be affordable when they reach that state. There are many instances where ISPs have monopolies on different districts and they make sure it stays that way.
We do need a balance between government and privatisation, and the government does need to regulate the private industry and ensure no anti-competitive practises occur. We have to ensure competition exists and prevent monopolies at all costs. A minimal government doesn't benefit anyone but the powerful (as the free market doesn't answer to the people, it answers to the shareholders) and neither does an authoritarian government benefit anyone with entrepreneurial aspirations that could cause a paradigm shift in society.
I think the internet is a utility, like electricity and water. The government should own the physical infrastructure, and sell the bandwidth off to ISPs who in turn sell it to us. We can then enforce a competitive environment to ensure people have a choice with the internet. It also means that people living rurally don't have to pay exorbitant fees to get connected to the internet. All large entities are inefficient, both private and public, so it makes no difference in that aspect, KPIs are all we have to ensure best standards.

The government doesn't need to provide free internet because Starbucks and McDonald's already do. Commercial companies get enough profit from your personal information and/or patronage that there will be ways to get free internet if you are happy to accept the trade-offs. You can even get free cellular service (including data) from providers like freedompop if you are okay with certain trade-offs.

It would be nice to have free internet, but only if big companies like Google, Microsoft and Facebook were the ones providing it. It has to be from private initiatives, if not, it isn't really worth it. We need to minimize the state!

Internet represents an ideal of freedom, it would be logical for everyone to have access to it (of course, it would have to respect net neutrality, that's why it should be provided by the state)

  • @alexmonterville6342

Not "free" monetarily but free like "open", yes. Like your ISP shouldn't be able to restrict where you can go on the internet unless it's something clearly illegal. I guess that's debatable too though.

A lesson, Government 101: if the government “gives” you something, they can ipso facto take it from you. So, no.

"FREE INTERNET" from the government simply means that the government would get into the internet providing business. How can companies compete with the government who doesn't actually have to make a profit to stay "in business"? So, you force good providers out of the market. Name something the government does good? Now you want to let them run the internet? That would be a sad day. internet

Communism when taken as a totality may be a disaster (for that matter so is capitalism) however to extract the best parts and adopt them does not hurt. In this case it may even help capitalism by fostering knowledge and growth which leads to a better workforce. We already have some of this in place at least in the software industry (freeware) and education (Khan Academy) and several others.
