Missed your vlogs! It sucks that people are trying to get you to take down videos :(
Connections are absolutely important. So often we see people with connections (however they may have made them) taking the easier route to whatever they end up doing. At the same time, for where you are in life, not having settled for that route may suit you better in the long run. Your work ethic is incredible, from all I've watched over my fairly short time Subbing (9 months or so) and with that, I think the connections built over time will become stronger than those built short term. Almost to 100k! So happy for you!
Hi Steph~ Miss you lots! This video really takes me back to those feelings I had back in AIU - I've never become so close to sp many people, and at the same time felt the loneliness when those people left! I only experienced that 3x as I spent 3 semensters there. Can't even imagine what you guys have been through all those years!
My pros: had the time of my life and met the most wonderful people (which includes u of course). Got tons of friends from around the world, had the oportunity to get the know japanese culture and people, and learn the language. Having people around all the time, so it eats up the feeling of loneliness.
My cons: having people leave all the time really breaks your heart, and by the second semester I was not as open, and didnt even want to get to know the new people (because of the sadness of friends leaving). Each semester does not feel the same (as you say about the culture changing). Also I felt quite left out from many of the japanese people - I tried to become friends with so many people, but in the end I was rarely invited to parties/gatherings with the Japanese. I was told that the reason being they didnt want foreigners at the party. This was so sad for me. I know a lot of other foreign students felt left out like that. Also cuz everyone speaks English, it's easy to just speak English and not challenge myself as much with Japanese in daily conversations xD
Anyway - loooved the video, made me feel both happy and sad.

It's so interesting that there are exchange students who feel left out because of Japansese. There are other exchange students (like me :P) who are constantly spoken to in English even though we are able to handle a Japanese conversation ahahaha sometimes you feel like they think "there's no way he can speak Japanese, so I'll switch to English". :/

Well it's true that it is quicker to get something if you have a good connection but i think some people in indonesia behave like they don't care anymore(sort of) if they already have some connection and just don't study to get something bc they knew they will have it😢. It's just so sad bc sometimes the one with the connection will be the priority than the one who really study hard. I think it's good if you have connection but "no pain no gain" you know? I mean just bc you have connection don't forget to study too. Besides it will feel different when you get something not from your effort than from your own sweat, you will feel more pleased and satisfied😊

Maybe it's because the people here are very petty. What with the grudges for very small things; and their tendency to do petty things like eye stares, cat calling.
Do you know why people become petty? That's because they don't have nothing better to do, because their lives are shit, that's why they have so much resources and time to do petty things. We as a nation has regressed in terms of morality; instead of adopting our indigenous wisdom and culture, we throw it away thinking it's "backwards", "old-fashioned", and we absorbed all the glitters of globalism. The Majapahit empire didn't become great by blindly adopting the Chinese, Indians, and Muslim cultures, but because they strove to make the Javanese culture and wisdom first and foremost.
If you care to read a book "Eden In the East" by an Oxford University professor, Stephen Oppenheimer, you'll realize that the culture of Nusantara was actually the first ever cradle of civilization in the world, before the great flood arrived at the end of the ice age about 8000 years ago. After the great flood (due to sudden melting of global ice), the huge Sundaland continent was drowned creating the now familiar archipelago of Indonesia, and the survivors of this foundational culture spread all over the world to nurture the great civilizations such as those in Egypt, Sumeria, China, and even Japan. Some of them sailed east to start the pacific island civilizations like the ones in Hawaii and New Zealand. You'd be surprised that modern genetics have proven the Austronesian genes (the Southeast Asian, or more specifically the Javanese genes) are spread well over the globe.
So instead of being blinded and awed by these new glitters of globalism, we must dig back our great foundational culture and adopt it.

What was your motivation to go to Akita, as opposed to other institutions of higher learning? Was it the internationalism of the student body or the English language commonality? If you could go back in time, knowing what you know now, would you have still gone to AIU (Akita) or SNU (Seoul) ?
