You are spot on. That’s why people with finer textures tend to bald at crown when locs not retwisted every two to three weeks. The weight of the locs from not being retwisted pulls the hair out. Thanks for the information you confirmed what I was thinking and had been observing. Also retwist shouldn’t be super tight either because it will damage the hair follicles. You are a wellspring of information. Blessings to you 🙏🏾

Absolutely. The weight plus any styling or pulling, or even running your hair through your scalp to massage it can cause breakage. Thanks for your comment! 🖤

Agreed!!! I also have fine hair and I too experimented with going two months without a retwist. My hair grows away from the LOC as well. I noticed that because all of that loose hair wasn't growing into the LOC, my roots were much thinner. Went back to washing and retwisting every two weeks! All is well, three years strong!!

I've been on my loc journey for 3 years now. What I've learned for me is that my locs are thick and heavy. Waiting to long to retwist my hair made it easier for my locs to break and the damage is just terribly. My locs definitely need a lot of care and upkeep. I got high maintenance locs lol

Congratulations on 100K🎉 I totally agree! I’ve been loc’d 5 1/2 years I have my retwist done twice a month & Cleansed once a month. I often now get asked if my locs are extensions lol!
I’ve also noticed a lot of women with long locs have thin edges, a balding crown or both. Mine are only styled for occasions. I also avoid snatching them up into ponytails. I believe those practices keep the edges and hair full. Along with healthy eating for sure! 😉Your channel has been a huge help. I joined before I started my journey. Hope to meet you one day. 💯 I have fine flyaway hair that grows away from my locs and I know better than to wait over 6 weeks. It will break right off. It's the way a person retwists that causes thinning, you don't need to retwist your scalp, just the new growth.

Congrats 🎉. Your right it's not a one size fits all. I have 200+ locs, tailbone, finer texture around my perimeter & I'm semi free-form. I retwist Nov/Mar/July. However, my hair don't grow away from the loc, I have to go in weekly to separate my roots. I was with my Niece this weekend her locs are passed her butt, she's got a who afro on her head( grows away from the loc), so yes! Pages like this is very helpful 🙂, we all want our locs strong from root to tip.

I'm so glad I saw this. I just started my locs 3 months ago and I've noticed that my hair grows away from my locs so I have many strands that are loose. My hair is fine also and I kept seeing people say wait at least 4-6 weeks to retwist or else it'll cause thinning. So I've been scared to retwist. Now I'm like... Okay maybe that doesn't apply to me. I am about to start retwisting my hair every two weeks. I have been doing 3-4 weeks and have had my locs for 9 months now. I have noticed so much breakage and marrying at the roots. I just feel it would do me more good to retwist more often, than have to separate my roots. I am very careful when I retwist anyway, so I shouldn’t have too much tension. I think I’ve had more breakage and possible thinning going longer without the retwist then not.

I’m so glad I watched this. I was pretty much told that retwisting before the 4 week mark was bad for my hair so I’ve been stretching it out and by that 4th week my hair is looking crazy, it’s dry and I do have some signs of breakage. I also have really really dry hair anyway and I’m trying to find better ways to moisturize my locs in between retwists. I think I’m going to try every 3 weeks next but I would definitely not be mad at doing it every two weeks.

Can you explain to me how you manage? It wouldn't be a problem if we were to completely freeform without manipulation at all, but because we are trying to semi-freeform, that's what makes it hard with our hair texture. I have fine hair too, and I noticed same thing she mentioned in the video. Infact, my initial plan was to not retwist at all, but just separate, cause that's what semi-freeforming means to me, but examining my hair made me realise that it might start to thin out if I let it be, so I have been forced to retwsit twice now, just to save my hair, which pisses me off, cause if I had thick hair, I would have been able to do what I intended to do. So how do you manage to retwist just twice a year, at least if I can find a way to limit how often I retwist, it would go a long way. I don't like the idea of manipulating my hair often. So since you said you have the same texture, I would like to know how you manage to keep it down to just twice a year.
