this kind of political discussion around radio & cuba reminds me of the years the Bush admin used to fly a plane over Cuba to broadcast TV Marti. The island is still such an interesting subject of surveillance and propaganda.
Yes. The US had a large network of dozens of elephant cages in various countries and within the US, which were all able to communicate with one another and with Washington, so an HF source could be very rapidly located, identified, and tracked. With the move of both strategic and much tactical communications to satellites, most of them were shut down. Bonshaw is gone, the big ones at Lulalualei and Wahiawa in Hawaii are gone, as is the one near Istanbul and the one in Nigeria... there is one in Udon in Thailand that was turned into a museum. Why would the Chinese even bother setting one up these days?
@@kludgeaudio what's old does appear to become new again - there seems to be increasing military HF emissions from Europe probably as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. That said, if I was a hypothetical spy in an enemy country wanting to quickly get a small amount of ciphertext back to base I'd probably use steg and put it up as an image of me and family on holidays or whatever my cover was on some social media site - I know some algorithms are quite resilient to compression and have whitening to reduce the likelihood of detection. I think that the field w/ the 6 white antennas has always been 6 antennas and that there is a small bit of duplication going on on the Google earth image, such issues sometimes appear when the new data was taken from a different angle than the previous one, evidence for that is the fact that the alleged other set of 6 antennas is just like the first set but wierdly offset at an angle, like a reflection

The space transmissions aren’t encrypted what so ever. The repeaters of the military stuff would throw off the reception of anything sensitive i would think.
I think you need to rewatch before commenting so quick. There are about a dozen sites in Cuba. Some have expanded a lot like Wayjay. Thst alone went from a few bldgs to having it's own solar farm and a couple dozen antennas in 20 yrs. A look at the DClass by CIA/DIA greatly disproves your "low budget" theory. Realize it is a jungle there and so it is hard to keep growth back in some areas, but there are hundreds if not thousands of acres amongst the sites. Quite the opposite of what you say.
