I've been drawing fan art of Mario creatures for a long time, and I eventually came up with my own story. One of the main characters is a plus-sized black female and I've never been satisfied with how her lips came out. Finally after watching your video I've settled on a design I'm way happier with. I attended an HBCU and was inspired by a lot of cool, intelligent black women I met there and your tutorial has helped me do them more justice in my art. Thanks a lot man

Plus, many of the grandkids are mixed race as well), and it's been frustrating to realize how often black folks' ethnic features are watered down into more white/European features in art. I've seen how beautifully diverse the Black community looks (especially here in America, though there is some tragic history behind the diversity), and I want to capture that. So thanks for making this video, since I love drawing my fellow Black folks, and I want to do it right.

Yes!!! A very good demonstration. I kinda do the same thing as you do with the lips. However, I seem to blend the two together and used the skin tone to make the difference... I agree with you on not running away from the ethnic features... Dude thank you for this training, Yes there is an elephant in the room... Let's acknowledge everyone and their features...
Thank you for doing this. I’m a beginner and find that I enjoy drawing black people the most. I think it’s because I see more character and facial expression which is fun to capture. I also like to draw old people for the same reason.
I'm a white guy and I have to say that, for me, the distance between an honest rendering of a black person's face and what I would think is offensive minstrelsy is really short. And it is frustrating sometimes. A couple of weeks ago I tried a pencil portrait of Toni Morrison and it was god-awful. I agree with DKG that the proportions and spacing are critical. The times I screwed up a drawing of a person are the times I messed up those two aspects. I'll keep working at it, but I think I'll log more practice time before I attempt Ms. Morrison again.
It's all about practice and observation my dude. Don't be too hard on yourself. As long as you have a desire to get it right and accurate it will work out and I promise you...you will create a perfect portrait of Toni. Appreciate your candor on this.
Thank you so much for this! It's so true what you said about honing your critical eye to see what looks right. I also do the thing with not connecting the lip lines, I think it looks more natural and enhances the subtle shadow that's usually there underneath a bottom lip. In fact, I think I only sometimes connect the lines if I'm drawing someone with sharply drawn lipstick. I found this video because I was mulling over a shot in my comic of my Black character breathing magic fire -- I wondered if their lips had too much of a "donut mouth" look, which feels disrespectful and not how I wanted it. So I searched "how to draw Black lips" and got here. It helped me feel confident that my instinct to question the shot was a good one. In the end, I looked up a reference (googled up a stock photo of a Black woman blowing out a birthday candle), redrew, and it came out MUCH better this time.

This video was really helpful! I really struggled drawing certain Afrocentric features, especially the lips when it came to drawing my original characters and making portraits of some of my family members... So, this really helps me do them justice.

Thanks for making this video, it’s not just the how to draw content that’s useful, it’s also the reminder that it’s OK not to know at first. I think some of the issue of artists not learning or being trained on how to draw non-white features comes from the fact that most of the “best”/most recommended drawing figures/faces books are from decades ago and include only white people. I found your channel from your Albrecht Durer marker review of all things! I guess waking up too early and dozing to art supply reviews has it’s benefits?

We have to go discover them for ourselves and then you gotta do even more research to get into their mindset and process... That's why I made this video (I'm far from a great artist FYI) to just address the elephant in the room... Well said. I like the very subtle difference you drew between the male and female lips, yet it's obvious which is which. Regarding the Graphgear mechanical pencil, I noticed you leave the metal cap on the eraser. I finally left mine off because apparently I erase a lot. lol. A LOT!

My newest d&d character is black and I've fallen in love with the shading on dark skin and oh! OH! dredlocks are SO FUN TO DRAW HAHA! But... I cant do his lips without making him look girly. Halp.

I really like this video, I have some characters that I have that have dark skin colors and I’ve drawn them closer to white people cause that’s what I know and I always thought they didn’t look good. I’ve been trying to make them look like their ethnicity
You have to study skin tones. If you are coloring digitally use your hue and saturation sliders to add more red to your browns...don't just use what comes on the pallet...also pull up references for indian people...their skin tones are extremely varied...and only something you get with really studying...

I’m starting out in the art business and have been trying to get my art career together! Currently 16 and as a black person I want to create black characters but kind of struggle with that... can you give me pointers on how to start or how to start my art career in general! My goal when I get older is to create a show kind of like doc mcstuffins with a black character that teaches children and is the main character
Right now as a 16 year old. You need to have three primary concerns. 1. Practicing and improving your art. 2. Practicing and improving your writing. 3. Learning as much as you can about printing, publishing, social media, art galleries and anything art business related. You need to draw everyday. Have a hard time drawing hands look up hands on Pinterest and draw them. Hundreds of them. Want to be a good writer. Write a story and post it. Take critiques on your stories and improve. All you need to do right now is practice. Practice. Practice. And don't just practice drawing. Explore painting, watercolors, acrylics, and oils. Explore using charcoal. Explore traditional inking. Study business. Study the business of art. Marketing your art. Using social media. Everything. Spend the next three to five years emersed in improving your skill and becoming a smart business person.

I’m currently trying to do a art study that makes you draw specific things for 30 days and so far I see a little improvement but thanks again and I’m going to try my best!
Could you do show how to mix darker skin tones. When I try to mix skin tones I use yellow, red, blue, and white it does make fair to light skin brown but when I try to mix dark skin tones it always looks alittle gray or overly purple. Is there a color I’m missing to the mix?
Mixing colors is still something I struggle with like you but I will look into making a video maybe collabing with another artist to get the answers we both need.

You have to rely on your common sense. If you take a look at a drawing and it looks racially insensitive then you need to adjust your art work.

I wanna make a character who is indian, from india. But i colour him in and people just think he is black. Any idea how i can distinguish it
You have to study skin tones. If you are coloring digitally use your hue and saturation sliders to add more red to your browns...don't just use what comes on the pallet...also pull up references for indian people...their skin tones are extremely varied...and only something you get with really studying...

I’m starting out in the art business and have been trying to get my art career together! Currently 16 and as a black person I want to create black characters but kind of struggle with that... can you give me pointers on how to start or how to start my art career in general! My goal when I get older is to create a show kind of like doc mcstuffins with a black character that teaches children and is the main character
Right now as a 16 year old. You need to have three primary concerns.
1. Practicing and improving your art.
2. Practicing and improving your writing.
3. Learning as much as you can about printing, publishing, social media, art galleries and anything art business related.
You need to draw everyday. Have a hard time drawing hands look up hands on Pinterest and draw them. Hundreds of them. Want to be a good writer. Write a story and post it. Take critiques on your stories and improve.
All you need to do right now is practice. Practice. Practice. And don't just practice drawing. Explore painting, watercolors, acrylics, and oils. Explore using charcoal. Explore traditional inking.
Study business. Study the business of art. Marketing your art. Using social media. Everything. Spend the next three to five years emersed in improving your skill and becoming a smart business person.
@@DKG72 thank youuu!! And that’s currently what I’m doing. I’ve tried things from the posca pens to digital, watercolor and so on! I’m currently trying to do a art study that makes you draw specific things for 30 days and so far I see a little improvement but thanks again and I’m going to try my best!

Could you do show how to mix darker skin tones. When I try to mix skin tones I use yellow, red, blue, and white it does make fair to light skin brown but when I try to mix dark skin tones it always looks alittle gray or overly purple. Is there a color I’m missing to the mix?
Mixing colors is still something I struggle with like you but I will look into making a video maybe collabing with another artist to get the answers we both need.

I’m a beginning artist and I’m trying to learn how to draw poc, but I was wondering if it would be offensive if I drew my characters with stereotypical features of their specific race?? Because I want them to look different and have distinctive facial features, but idk if it would be considered racist or not.
