This is what you get when brothers play together since they were little kids.. I saw them more than once in the clubs in OZ and they were always astounding.. Tommy must really miss Phil.. irreplaceable.
Luckily, I was sitting in the room when these guys were burning up those guitars. I had a pretty girl with me who had never heard of Tommy nor Chet. She fell in love with Tommy and went to the next couple of CAAS meetings with me. Alas, as always, she drifted away but I have great memories of her and that day.
Thanks so much for these . It brings back so many memories. It's jaw dropping virtuosity with humour and joy. RIP Phil. So sad that these two brilliant brothers will never share another tune together. That's what makes these videos even more important. To remind us that to live each day.
I know this comment is a long time after you posted it, I was just reminiscing captured Phil clips and read your comment, only someone who knows Phil or had played with him would know how he loved to be loud god bless him. Phil was a good mate of mine and I had a laugh when I saw this comment, thanks for memory and the laugh.
@jerrysekCZ Thanks for replying. I'll put "Pickie,Pickie,Pickie"within the next few days. Check out the videos I just uploaded from the same period. I have lots more rare Tommy performances that I will hopefully post over the next couple of months.
At 2:30, when Phil goes into overdrive and Tommy cracks a smile and obviously are thinking "damn, that's fast" you know how impressive Phil's performance really is!
More likely thinking "You didn't get me this time!" They were playing together since Tommy was 5 or 6 years old. Phil was the big brother. I've been told that, like many close and loving brothers, they played tricks on each other. I've also been told that Phil, being the older brother, always played tricks that it was easy for Tommy to handle.
Can't say.. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Phil then would have been one of the best flat-pickers in the world. While Tommy has turned his skills into finger-picking, and is now one of the best in the world in the Chet Atkins style .....and taken it beyond ! When neither of the brothers can read music you realise what true musical geniuses they are.
Having met both men numerous times as a duo and solo artists Phil was easier to talk to and an absolute easy going down to earth guy, one minute snakes and lizards and the next fast V8 Fords
Just after their performance at CAAS, Phil came up and stayed with us for a few days in Knoxville. Tommy came a couple of days later and the two of them did a show. Phil was still on Aussie time and couldn't sleep at night. We put a big jar of Oreo cookies in his room, along with some other snacks just in case he wanted something to munch on. Overnight, the guy ate the entire jar of Oreos! The funny part was that he had taken my daughters Sesame Street Cookie monster and put it in the jar and sealed the top! The next morning he went wandering about in the woods in search of "Tennessee" snakes. (damn glad he didn't find any) What a great player, hilarious comedian and overall great guy! I can NOT believe that he's gone.

Speaking from the perspective you currently find yourself when reading this, who's better in your opinion, folks, Tommy or Phil?!
