  • In this episode, I am exploring the Kenai peninsula of Alaska. Besides world class scenery, this area has a lot of history too. Alaska used to be colonized by the Russians, until they sold Alaska to the Americans in the 60s.

This episode is particularly close to my heart. My husband, my 18 month old daughter and I lived in Soldotna, AK in 1968. We lived in a 10 x 50 Marlette house trailer. My husband worked on oil rigs in the Cooke Inlet. He was gone for long periods of time. I was alone much of the time. Anchorage was 150 miles north of us on a frozen tundra road. We lived within 200 feet of the Kenai River. I would often venture to Homer to buy fish, again on a frozen tundra road. There was a 6.2 MG earthquake that struck in the middle of the night. The Kenai Glacier broke up as a result of the earthquake . The Glacier broke apart, came roaring down the Keani River toward our home. You could hear the massive cracking and roaring as the Glacier broke apart and moved. I bundled my daughter and myself up in the warmest clothing we had, thought I could drive across a bridge toward Anchorage, but the propane tank had broken away from the trailer and was leaking gas next to the car. I didn't dare start the car. So, I carried my daughter and walked to the bridge crossing, about a mile away. It was 22° below zero. I had no other choice. I waited for about 2 hours, walking and holding my daughter. I walked in circles to stay warm. Finally, I heard a truck engine coming toward us. A neighbor with his children and wife had left their home on the River too. They saved our lives. We lost everything except the clothes on our backs and our lives. My husband was on a Shell rig working. The rig did not topple over, but it was over 2 weeks before I knew if he was dead or alive. No cell phone in those days and no communication of any kind. I left 3 weeks later from a airport hanger on a C130 cargo plane, went to Seattle and have never been back.

So sorry to hear your frightening experience. I live in Australia and well remember that event. You suffered badly but learned something precious. You can lose everything but not lose the most precious thing. Your husband your daughter your own life. That is something all of us need to appreciate every day. Here you are today all these years later with sustenance and covering again plus access to a computer.....you have done well lass

ho my gosh what a story ! I got goosebumps reading that you waited for 2 hours, keeping warm moving around with your little girl. It's was a terrifying moment but you got trough. Luckely you were smart enough to leave the house and go and not just sit around and wait. I can relate a little bit, i hitchhiked a lot in Canada all seasons round. This episode is ALSO close to MY heart. My father (a Kentucky hillbilly) had a deep rooted boyhood dream to go to Alaska. Like the Beverly Hillbillies, we bought a new car, loaded it up (w-roof luggage carrier), and headed off from St.Louis to Anchorage via the 1200 mile all gravel AL-CAN Highway in the spring of 1965. What an absolutely gorgeous place to live with so many, many places to go and things to do. I especially remember walking upon the forest tundra, a active glacier, the Cordova Iceworm Festival, the USPS @ North Pole AK ( just south of Fairbanks), the Sun just kissing the top of the mountain and then a new day began. We lived there from my age of 11 through 13. We were forced to return to the greater St.Louis east in Illinois due to my grandmother's lingering life-threatening illness. We had always planned to return but unfortunately, never did. I developed a great bond with a native Alaskan (his birth village was above the arctic circle) and a black neighbor. My grandfather was half Cherokee and my mom was of Dutch descent and although my lineage may be a sorta Heinz 57 variety, my skin color is Caucasian. My girlfriend was German. Anchorage is a melting pot of culture & race. Although we knew of the race rioting in the lower 48, we had NO issues in Anchorage. I lived in a racially mixed neighborhood and my "colored" neighbors treated me like a son. It was pointed out to me that I also was "colored" -- "peach colored". My point ... we multi-cultured best friends just could not understand what all the racial tensions were about. We only saw each other ... our cultural differences didn't matter. I truly miss Alaska.

A tip from a 76 year old motorcycle rider. I have been riding sense 1962. Always carry Blue and red Loctite. It is a thread locker that you put on nuts and bolts. Use blue for a light duty job like that merroir and Red for a very strong lock that you may have to use a impact wrench to get loose. As a temporary fix like that merroir, take a Coke can and cut a piece that will go 1/2 around the shaft of the threads on the merroir. Place it in the hole and screw in the merroir shaft. The Loctite comes in various sizes all you need is the smallest size. That 300 your riding is a great small bike, but does vibrate as do all single cylinder bikes.

Someone else has probably told you this, but those 'beautiful flowers' you frequently make note of, appear to be what is commonly called 'Fireweed'. In the interior it is a general indicator of the season. It flowers in late Spring/early summer. As the season progresses the the blossoms start to dry up starting from the bottom and over time progresses towards the tip. Once the tip has gone to seed that's a general indication that summer is over and Fall has begun. Enjoy our state..there is soooo much to see. Cheers!

Homer has a fairly large fleet of fishing boats in a neat harbor; and it is literally "Lands End". Also they do a lot of jams and jellies there (for sale), and of course, the famous Salty Dog Saloon. I believe Tom Bodett used to live there, keeping the "light on for us" (Motel 6 fame).

Homer was one of my favorite places in Alaska when I did my motorcycle trip there. Being from UK, we are fond of Fish & Chips and I was amazed to find that halibut is used instead of cod. Halibut is incredibly expensive and difficult to find in UK, but is the most common fish in Homer. I visited that same Russian orthodox church and the whole area around there has lots of Russian place and street names. Listening to Noraly commenting on how well the bike rides on its new tires and repaired forks reminds me of the old car lot advertising slogan..."one lady owner".....just don't buy a used Honda from this particular lady - its been thrashed to within an inch of its life 🤣

I had no idea that Noraly would be coming down the Kenai Peninsula, let alone ride out East End Road but I'm very glad to see that the Homer and Kachemak Bay that I see every day through my front window was included in your spectacular journey up from South America..As an interesting side note, those pinkish flowers you see everywhere are called "Fireweed" and we see them locally as an indicator of where we are chronologically in our summer season as the blossoms slowly peak that beautiful color as they climb the stalk June through August/September to eventually "top out" as the white tufted seeds let loose into the air everywhere and the leaves turn a vivid red as early winter arrives...Quite the adventure and very pleased to know that you got to briefly experience our little part of the world in this journey! Hi! The whole background can be told for a very long time, but the main reasons why we sold Alaska are the unprofitability of fur and fishing, the huge distance from the metropolis, constant food problems, low defense capability in the event of a war with Britain, high resource intensity, which takes money and people, as well as the lack of geological data on Alaska oil and huge reserves of gold and other minerals. A great place, but in Russia itself, in its eastern part, there are much more similar places. So geographically everything is fine. But because of the gold, of course, it's a pity.
