One of my all-time favorite NES games. With the save system and limited torches, it was a little stressful! Eventually we were close to the end but stuck. I actually paid money and called the Nintendo Power help line (after begging the parents for permission) and got the clue for how to get past the area. I don't remember exactly where we were stuck, but I remember the "Game Counselor" gave me a hint for the final boss: "Attack the wrong one and you'll be true blue, but hit the right one and you'll be tickled pink." Such a great game, thanks for letting me relive it once again.
To be honest, I wasn’t born in the generation of NES or Sega but my dad introduced my to these types of games when I was younger and this was one of the first Nes games I played which I managed to finish! It was an amazing game

Absolutely loved this game. I couldn't get very far. I remember when the Nintendo Power magazine came out with a shadowgate walkthrough. I followed it to a T lol. Amazed as a child my memory, as I went back several times and played it through without the walkthrough. There must be 300 precise steps/moves to take to beat this game.
Ah man, this game takes me back. I played this game when I was in middle school. Me and a friend were playing it and would give each other tips. I was the one who was ahead and gave him tips on how to proceed most of the time. When I reached the warlock lord I got stuck. Imagine my surprise the next day when my friend told me how he beat the game. I didn’t believe him, but when I got home I followed his advice and beat the game as well.
Fuck me sideways. "Longplay" is right. Trying to pick up anything is a quest in and of itself. "You can't take it!!" I imagine him standing there struggling, awkwardly thrusting his arm, grabbing at everything around the item he's trying to take.
For me personally, Shadowgate was the best title from ICOM Simulations to be bestowed on the NES! Yes, Deja Vu and Uninvited are just as respectable. But for me, Shadowgate is tops with me!
Deja Vu is the better game without the stupid torch mechanic -- although I remember getting permanently stuck in Deja Vu after fiddling with the wrong medicine

This game is very cryptic that torch i could not take i thought it was there for design i would have never guess you had to use it and move it for a door to appear i bet when nintendo had game counsellors there phone lines where probably flooded with people asking for help in this game lol 😆

I don't think I could actually play this again for my own benefit, having played it myself when I was but a wee lad, and having seen it so many times in playthrough, and now this longplay. However, I think once my kids are old enough to appreciate puzzle adventure games, I'd gladly sit with them on this. It's a pretty exciting and creepy game when you're a kid, where every wrong move could lead to a gruesome death. And figuring out the puzzles are very rewarding.
I remember getting this game and Faxanadu for my summer games. I dreamt of Willow and Final Fantasy that summer as well, but could only get two games. Faxanadu was great as well. I don't regret my decision. Those two are now in my reminiscing past and not the other two...

Did you know if you get stuck, in every room you can press the start or select button to see if any hints are available. If so they will be given in the text window. I had this game when I was a kid in the early 90's, I was able to get really far with trial and error but could never beat it. Since I had the manual, I was able to read the getting hints paragraph on page 11. Now that I'm older, I totally forgot about this. When I repurchased my NES, I got all the games I had as a kid. Shadowgate came with a manual, and I was able to rediscover this simple tip. Over the years I eventually bought the entire series Deja Vu, Shadowgate, and Uninvited. Which were all pc games that were ported by Kemco to the NES. Anyways your able to use this tip in all 3 of the NES games.
I used to play this at my cousin's house. Scared the pants off me but also entranced me. Sadly yesterday I had to take the TV which I played this through to a recycling centre here in North Wales. The small Philips TV had one aerial socket, and that's all that mattered.
I can't believe it's been 25 years since I sat in my bedroom, in front of my old 13" tv, clutching my NES controller with all my might playing Shadowgate, while the hair on the back of my neck stood straight up! You don't get that kind of experience from a video game anymore. My son won't play a point and click game for any longer than a few minutes. I just can't get him to realize what he's missing out on.

I had a hard time figureing out alot of things on this game hard as crap. I still got this game myself but never did beat it. 50 mintues is short for this game that would take others hours of gameplay trying to figure out this puzzle of many strategies I remember that De Javu game its sort of like this I actually beat it but it wasn't as long as this one.

@ Eji, yeah I remember that video game. It was called Beyond Shadowgate. It was okay but it wasn't that great. I want a real sequel though. Shadowgate II is what I want. Something that is just as good as Part One if not better. Another video game that is similar which also deserved a real, good sequel was the Immortal. In a way, that one was a true spiritual successor to Shadowgate.

Ohh my god how many hours iv spent on this game. Figuring out everything and restarts when the torch went out. And how proud I was after years I finerly made it. And I was the most popular guy in school by pressing me for answers how to beat the game. But I only gave hints. But my game was in swedish since I'm from Sweden.
I would love to have this game again. I was highly disappointed with the Wii classic games, because they don't have this game or many others I thought I would be able to play again.

I died so many times running into that slime. If you are backtracking there is no way to avoid it "You try to pass the slime but it engulfs your body, dissolving it in seconds..." Don't ever open the slime casket!

Half the challenge of this game was getting the damn cursor to point at the tiny objects in the HUD

Definitely one of my favorites to the NES. This game actually managed to scare me as a kid with it's eerie atmosphere.
Fun fact: you can burn away all the rugs and carpets in the game by using the lit torch on them. It’s only useful on one, but it’s a nice touch.

Many games from the NES era were like that tbh. Much easier to make the game harder rather than pushing the limits of the console with more content.
