    Yess! Thank you for explaining these behaviors so detailed and clearly. I’ve seen all these movements with my discus. I have 8 large-XL in a 90g and it was rough for me watching them sort out the pecking order. One bully had to be taken out for a while but then reintroduced after I rearranged the tank.Thank you for sharing your discus knowledge with us. ❤️🙏😊

    What a great topic Steve!!
    By the way their confirmation is so beautiful 🤩
    It's very interesting to watch how they have established their pecking order and how they react to each other.
    I could also see what you were talking about with the communication.
    This is a great demonstration and really should help others as well as myself understand their behavior and when there should be any type of intervention between the fish.
    One thing for sure as with any fish is really taking the time to watch what's going on in the aquarium!!
    Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! I hope you and your family are having a wonderful weekend 🙏🥰🌿🐟🌿💚

    Observation you may find interesting: I originally had a group of six adult wild discus in my 75 gallon tank that got along well. Two spawned successfully so I left them in the original tank to raise the fry, and moved the other four to an 8' long tank that I'd intended on moving all the discus to anyways. Of those four, two paired and heavily beat on the other two non-breeding adults. I had to separate them because the damage was too severe. After those fish recovered in hospital tanks (kept separate), I tried reintroducing all six adults together back into the 75 gallon tank and it was a bloodbath... the two pairs didn't really attack each other but would target the non-breeding fish. I had to divide all the pairs and non-breeding adults because the fin and skin damage from aggression was getting too bad. I will have to wait for some the baby discus to grow up before I can try putting all the adult discus back together with the grown babies as a larger group.

      Excellent information. I love the fact you took the time to explain in such detail. I can relate to your situation. Most of the time things go well but sometimes there is no cohesiveness and it take experience to notice before it becomes serious. I have to admit I have missed the signs sometimes with disastrous consequences. Thank you again for commenting with your experiences.

    Funny thing is if I seen this behavior for the first time in my tank I would assume it's just a pecking order thing as long as I didn't see actual damage but I'm glad I know now because now I won't have to wonder I'll already know for sure

    I have two discus in a 40g long they’re male and female and like each other a lot, would it be a bad idea to introduce more? Is there any way to go about it ie upsizing etc

    • @shelleraquatics
      @shelleraquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a lesson I learned a long time ago with all fish. I would consider separate tank so you can monitor the new fish, There is no worse feeling than bring disease to an established healthy tank. Just my opinion but if you are going to invest in Discus it is a very minimal cost to get a quarantine tank and be patient in combining fish from different sources or different time periods. minimum quarantine is 14 days but 30 to 90 days is optimal.

    Hello, I have noticed that one of my dicuss isn’t eating…. Treating the whole tank with meds for two weeks, still not eating, should I treat the one fish with epson salt?

    • @shelleraquatics
      @shelleraquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A couple questions, let's start at the beginning.
      What meds?
      Is the tank planted?
      What is your temperature?
      Do you have a quarantine tank?

    I don't understand..."when a fish looks good, that's what's going on". Was said, after talking about fish bolting and knocking themselves out. Can you please clarify?. Thank you. 🐠

    • @shelleraquatics
      @shelleraquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Meaning when you find a dead discus in your tank and it literally looks perfect and healthy most likely the unexplained death was caused by trauma or bolting. Usually a dying discus shows signs of illness and has physical signs of its ailments and can take months for it to succumb to its disease, this gives us time to intervene. Bolting is usually an instant (but rare) death.
      Thank you for pointing this out, I will try and be more clear in the future.

      @@shelleraquatics Ahh! Better explanation! Thank you! Also, wanted to tell you my free swimming Discus are 10 days old! Trying to do this on First Bites and Ocean Nutrition's Instant Baby Brine Shrimp. Achievable?

    • @shelleraquatics
      @shelleraquatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Social DISCUSing that is super cool, they will grow on those foods but if you're looking for maximum growth they need Live baby brine shrimp. You will spend a lot of time nurturing these fry to get great shapes live bbs is the way I insure proper growth. You will still get good growth with those foods. Live BBS unlocks another level of growth.
