This is so weird if you watched Botez, Hikaru and Papaplatte a month ago. Like a mix of things that don't belong together and never thought they would appear on the same stream.
@@B_Squar3d cuz its the highly advanced Ludwig variation. Stockfish 21 sees bishop to e6 as the best move, eventually leading either to a perpetual or a mate 60. In the end, Ludwig's memory failed him and he did not remember the line.
It almost feels like the objective is to find the most creative way to lose, until eventually someone had to win. I can't believe people are taking this seriously. Ludwig clearly threw the game, he mentioned wanting to just get the easy money/content from the loser's bracket before. Hikaru could tell something was off from the start, and he was certain after Lud ignored the Queen blunder. You can see the disappointment in his eyes throughout the game, both with the competitive spirit being compromised, and the BM to papaplatte. The League term he thought of was "inting", meaning intentionally losing, and you can see Hikaru's awkward responses whenever Botez talks about how it's a weird game, or whether Ludwig can win. I actually lost a lot of respect for Ludwig from this, when you see how hard his opponent was trying and how much the win meant to him, and you know he didn't even respect him enough to think he could possibly win if they both tried.
Oh this is so much fun. The way they shock the GMS with their beginner moves is just brilliant. The culture clash is real but everyone is having fun it seems and that’s great.
I think psychologically it's something to do with the fact that pawns only forwards whereas the other pieces move both forwards and backwards. Because of that your mind can trick you into thinking that the queen is behind the pawn instead of in front of it. Although I wouldn't normally get confused in the middle game like this. There's been situations where both players have pushed their pawns up the other end of the other board so it looks like they're starting from the opposite side, and I actually forgot which side of the board I was playing on ;) Ludwig is totally right about his reason for not seeing it either. You don't expect your opponent to make such a bad move, so you simply don't acknowledge it as a possibility. I've even seen Hikaru get confused when doing puzzles in puzzle rush, he forgets which way the pawns move sometimes, even though it should be obvious they always go from bottom to top. Because he's so used to viewing the board from his opponent's perspective, he sometimes forgets which perspective is his and which is his opponents' Another weird visual blunder is that people often miss when a bishop can move backwards to do a long distance capture. They _always_ see it when the bishop is moving forwards.
When both players miss a super obvious move (like pawn captures queen) it’s referred to as “double blindness”. In blitz chess with lots of time pressure, it can happen to even high-ranked players.
It even happens to the very best. I'm not sure what, when, where or against whom the game was, but Hanging Pawns has a video on blundering less, where Tigran Petrosian, who was an incredibly strong grandmaster, has a winning position in a very important game, I think it was a World Championship game and then proceeds to blunder his queen and then resign within a move or two.
