I know it's very "old man yells at cloud" of me, but the whole idea that web 1 was just going to websites and looking at them is pissing me off. Anyone remember geocities? talk city? Heck BBS and newsgroups predate most of the web 1.0 timelines that get mentioned in these web 3 pitches. The early internet was actually way more decentralized than most of the "Web 3" fantasizing that's going on here.

Legit exactly what I was going to say. These babies don't know nothin. Like lol you can't share anything??? Email the link to your friends. Share it on a message board. Tell people in real life about it and tell them the web address.. This is how the Internet became more and more popular. So many awesome communities back in the day

the whole thing with this "decentralized" stuff is that they dont talk at all about the meat and potatoes, like who owns the computers? and the network? not in some blockchain sense, but like the tangible stuff

This is literally and I mean LITERALLY ‘instead of a Geocities website or a live journal I can host my own blog + NFT’

LITERALLY what it seems like. They think web 1 was some ancient read only tome that the peasants could only gaze upon. Their vision of web 3 is literally what web 1 was except apparently you also sell your own sh*tcoins and use blockchain despite the fact that is slower and uses exponentially more energy to do the same thing we can already do, for some as yet inexplicable reasons.
It is truly terrifying to know that there is a significant part of a generation despite having access to the entire body of human knowledge in the palm of your hand, instead choose to get all their news and information from other know nothings that just make things up for clout.

The only way this shit can be decentralized is if every user of every web3 service, say a discussion board or social media, has to store the blockchain of the entire thing on their computer. Imagine every social media and internet service you use, and then imagine that you have to keep the entire goddamn thing on your computer, all the data, all discussions, posts, photos ever recorded, and now multiply that by all the services you are going to use. And now think about the fact that every other user has to have a copy of all the blockchains on their computers as well. This is stupid as hell. Very efficient A++

So, while I'm not claiming crypto isn't a very hyper-capitalist cringe-fest, the reason your main takeaway is that it's all about getting rich is because you chose to learn about it from Tik Tok & TH-cam, prob bc that makes for a more entertaining video. Crypto/wWeb3 is just a tool & the fact that it is being so financialized is more a consequence of the capitalist world we live in than anything inherent to crypto itself. There are a lot of leftists building in the space, but they're way less visible bc influencers don't make money shilling stuff that is good for humanity but has zero marketing budget. 🤷

I'm a fan of you Kelgore and watch all your videos. But I participate in Web 3.
I'm really not a fan of all the hype either tbh, and there are so many pple trying to capitalize on the new tech before the bubble bursts. Real explanations of web 3 are being drowned out by those who are trying to market scams because it's unregulated.
That said, here are some things that should be cleared up. Not everyone will have their own coin. Most will be part of communities(Decentralized Autonomous Organizations- or DAOs) that likely have a currency of some kind, with values monetary or not. These communities are what make up web 3, and those who participate in the DAOs and their economies own them and can vote on decisions about their development.
I'm not saying web 3 is perfect. A lot of it still needs to be figured out. But the whole point is to take the power out of the hands of the few.
It is still pretty capitalist atm, bc in most DAOs you have voting power based on the assets you hold, but in some cases those who work in the DAO earn the asset that could gain in value. It could be comparable to the socialist idea of companies whose workers have voting rights, while giving millions of jobs to regular people all over the world.

  • @Onomanatee
    @Onomanatee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

So I previously wrote a long rant here, but I guess I accidentally shut down the app without posting. Yay. So, redacted version of rant:
Good video, but I'm always missing one aspect in any left analysis of web3, and that's the potential for social or activist usage.
First of all, a bit of context that you aren't really getting from any tiktok / insta explanations: Web1, 2 and 3 are not fixed, defined things. A bunch of engineers, collectives and postgrads around the world are and have been working on all kinds of protocols and proof of concepts for the knotty problem of communication, data transactions and information architecture. Most of these ideas are not necessarily born out of greed, but just a puzzle to be solved, sometimes even a naive attempt at bettering humanity through some niche application.
Anyway, at some point, enough of these technologies interact and coalesce for outside, less nerdy people to take notice, at which point the capitalist ghouls come out of the woodwork to co-opt the tech and wring some money out of it. At this point, a buzzword like "web 3.0" is applied to this loose collection of ideas, and predatory people start making stuff.
For many of these people, who saturate most channels, the decentralised potential of the tech means "I can break up other big tech and gain more power myself". They want to REPLACE the current central authority with their own, instead of truly aiming for anything decentralised. It's just re-centralisation with a lot of smoke and mirrors.
However, I think it's really important to also address that, despite all the cryptobros and sillicon valley lizards, there is actually a lot of potential in some of the underlying ideas, tech and protocols for activism, anarchist organization, unions and labour, transparent voting mechanisms, etc... And it's a shame to critique and discard the technology just because most of us only see it through the capitalist lens. Instead, I hope more people can put their collective brainpower towards the potential positive aspects of the tech, and towards mitigating the inevitable abuse that's coming.

As far as I understand, they are all excited about the idea of owning stuff that you use. So lets say you use reddit, and you and every other user get shares of the company. This way you would have a say in what the company does, and how it impacts the community that you are a part of. Thats all in theory.
All of that is supposed to be financed through crypto/blockchain, basically financed by the community that is using the platform. Sooo like if you crowdfunded reddit into existence.
But I personally dont see how all of that would work because it has no regulations… it is supposed to be like regulated by the community… and we all know this just opens up room for every scam in the book. And even if enough time passes that it becomes self regulating… wouldn’t it then transform into a regular ass corporation? Like would you trust a corporation of people who’s job is to in-force certain regulation, or some crypto bro that tries to in-force the law just cuz he has the most reddit stars and is “trusted in the community”?
I don’t know… hope this semi explanation makes sense 😄

This is why TikTok needs to be banned 🤣. Can’t even get the basics right. Web one wasn’t read only… where do they think the content they were reading was coming from in the first place.
