Phil Perry: Patriots NEEDED to make RISKY MOVE to start Drake Maye

  • This morning on Toucher & Hardy, Phil Perry from NBC Sports Boston talked about the Patriots starting rookie Drake Maye. While there's a lot of excitement around Maye, Perry pointed out the significant risks involved. He raised concerns about the offensive line's ability to protect a young quarterback and emphasized the need for patience as Maye develops. Perry also stressed how crucial it is to have a solid supporting cast around him. Although Maye has shown flashes of elite talent, Perry warned the team needs to manage expectations and not rush his development. Ultimately, his success will depend on how well the team adapts and grows with him.

The kid is mentally strong and a go getter. I think they are starting him because Jacoby really is just the worst option. Drake can throw better and maneuver in the pocket better. If the concern was he couldn't take a hit than they shouldn't have drafted him. Secondly he's been touted for the 2 years leading up to the 2024 draft. He's also got the locker room behind him.

Highlights. I have seen Drake play full games. He scrambled in that pocket better than a lot of professional quarterbacks. Go look at Jaden Daniels play. He does not have the best line in front of him, but he’s very good at pocket presence. Drake is better at pocket presence than Jaden. He’s going to be able to keep going by scrambling, avoiding the sack, not every time but most of the time. Jacoby can’t do that. Mac cannot do that. You need to be a mobile quarterback these days to be successful. Brady Manning era is over.

I believe the defence was a no show. If offence moved and scored more, is there any reason to think that the defence would not be able to stop any of these offences they faced. Remember the Cinn game, Cincy fumbled on 1 yd line. If Cincy scored different game. Could easily be 0-5. Change -FEAR. Optics look terrible. Answer the simple ? what did everyone think their record would be after 5 games. Bad habits can filter in if they loose. Risk-reward is the ultimate reason for change. Is it worth the risk or do they need a sugar high?

Guys Drake just turned 22 years old recently, I would have kept him on the bench for this year. Jordan Love spent on the bench for 3 years before he was played and became a star last year. You have no talent around him at all! Why rush him? Why take such risk for what reasons? This year is a right off which we all were aware. We need to draft elite talent on the OL for next year and then throw him in.

This is Gerard Mayo trying to save his job. He’s sacrificing Drake Maye, exposing him to the disfunctioning offensive line while waiting for this bad group of receivers to uncover - which never comes. This move will not help anything. Maye cannot fix this. Like someone said here, the Patriots are gonna ruin another quarterback. What do you guys expect? Maye getting the Pats 2 more wins?? BIG DEAL! So what? Will that put people back in the seats? No! So as was said, Maye running for his life will undo all the progress he’s made. The bad footwork will return and worse, he’ll be forcing the ball into places he normally wouldn’t just to try and get something going. Then BAM! Pick 6. Or worse - he’ll run the ball and get killed because he doesn’t slide. He thinks hes a tight end or something when running it. And then Mr. Perry, where will the franchise be? They’ll have to draft another quarterback because they ruined yet ANOTHER fist round QB. Thhis is a BAD BAD move.

Playing Maye now though shows how desperate Mayo is because the QB isn’t the problem. The patriots will be better served by waiting until next year to play Maye - giving the franchise time to address the offensive line through the draft and free agency, and giving Maye a stable pocket to develop his skills. .
