Phil Perry: Patriots NEEDED to make RISKY MOVE to start Drake Maye

- This morning on Toucher & Hardy, Phil Perry from NBC Sports Boston talked about the Patriots starting rookie Drake Maye. While there's a lot of excitement around Maye, Perry pointed out the significant risks involved. He raised concerns about the offensive line's ability to protect a young quarterback and emphasized the need for patience as Maye develops. Perry also stressed how crucial it is to have a solid supporting cast around him. Although Maye has shown flashes of elite talent, Perry warned the team needs to manage expectations and not rush his development. Ultimately, his success will depend on how well the team adapts and grows with him.

For following the NFL for 60 plus years I have to say Phil Perry has impressed me with his knowledge and how he explains everything on a level that all can understand. I look forward to hearing him talk football.
When i started 15 years ago as a roadbuilder i was a rookie too,i learned while doing it not by sitting a year and watching another person doing it...and the worst part was my chief was my dad and he wasn´t nicer becus i was his son..eventually he retired and i became chief and he said now you are the better 1 .life is bout grinding!greetings from a belgium pats fan
Thank you Phil for not echoing "the sky is falling" mantra...GO PATS!
Bro, the sky is on the ground. Can't fall any farther. 😂
There's a reason to watch the games now
Every single patriot fan I have talked to us so excited, especially the ones going to the game this Sunday. Can’t we just have a freaking happy week ahead of us
Phil Perry the only person I can listen to. Everyone else sounds like a baby.
It's crazy how folks want to know why they want the kid out there and then at first they have been wanting him out there at first
Same people who bitched when Brissett was named the starter at the beginning if the season, even though Drake Maye "outperformed" him (the head coach said that, not me) are probably the same ones bitching that Drake Maye is getting the start now, and would be the same ones bitching if Mayo had continue to just throw Brissett out there and watch him struggle to throw for 150 yards
Crazy how phil is the only one making sense here
Phil is normally the only one that ever is. He balances Tom Curran out too
That's who Phil is. He's great.
Like always. Same with Andrew Callahan. Only two I can stand that cover the patriots
Phil is solid in most of his opinions/criticisms.
@@douglassmith2878 yea fr Taylor Kyles is also not bad. Evan lazar is good too but them podcasts a bit too long
Dude just wings it everytime he opens his mouth. King rambler
The kid is mentally strong and a go getter. I think they are starting him because Jacoby really is just the worst option. Drake can throw better and maneuver in the pocket better. If the concern was he couldn't take a hit than they shouldn't have drafted him. Secondly he's been touted for the 2 years leading up to the 2024 draft. He's also got the locker room behind him.
Drake is the type of quarterback that keeps drives going. He’s going to get those first downs. It’s just his nature. He is so competitive it’s not even funny. We were so lucky to get him.
Phil Perry carrying 98.5 on his back
Morning show at least
Rookie year Mac Jones had josh McDaniels....
Josh McDaniel is a very good play caller. He had a wild cam newton and almost went to playoffs
I would bring him back if I was mayo.
Random question/thought... shouldn't Boston Sports Radio stations have Boston sports fans as their show hosts?
I had to watch maye's college highlights and I'm reassured he looks very different to mac Jones...the organisation is in desperate need for some excitement and he might have that in bucket loads....please please o-line protect him...the college highlights shows next to no pressure
Highlights. I have seen Drake play full games. He scrambled in that pocket better than a lot of professional quarterbacks. Go look at Jaden Daniels play. He does not have the best line in front of him, but he’s very good at pocket presence. Drake is better at pocket presence than Jaden. He’s going to be able to keep going by scrambling, avoiding the sack, not every time but most of the time. Jacoby can’t do that. Mac cannot do that. You need to be a mobile quarterback these days to be successful. Brady Manning era is over.
7:37 - Perry was one of the biggest advocates of drafting Maye (or another QB) at 3 and not trading down. Is he just now realizing what we knew in the Spring, that the roster and coaching staff isn’t an environment conducive to developing a young QB?
3-4 years to evaluate a rookie is ludicrous. 2 or 3 games and you should have a good picture of the player.
Yall gotta stop babying the kid. Let him play. He is better than Jacoby. He got good pocket presence. Just let him play and learn.
Wasn’t it Perry that said in the preseason he saw drake maye starting week 5 against the dolphins
I really really REALLY!........ hope I'm wrong about Maye starting already. Hopefully he can get the ball moving through the air. I think all of New England Patriots fans and across the entire world are split on Maye starting. I really wish they tanked for top pick to build around the couple of young corner stones. Hopefully I'm wrong and he balls out
None of this stuff yall talking about or complaining about matters at all hes playing lets see what he is simple
Facts it’s like they scared he isn’t good and trying to set up the perfect scenario for him. They’re ass that’s why we drafted him. Use that mf.
Damn! I didn't realize all the football experts live in the comments section!
What’s a comments section for then?
Phil “in this league you need to extend the good rookie QBs by year 3 and if you don’t play him that shrinks to 2”
Hardy “that isn’t knowing what you have tho”
IT LITERALLY IS!!! WHAT?????
The crazy part is , they caused this problem and their not fixing it for him or brissett, bring in someone or trade or any left tackle , show the fans that u exhaust all options to give to your quarterbacks this looking like bill all over again
There is none to bring in, this is the hardest position outside the QB and if you don’t draft one chances are no one is giving one up. They were supposed to draft Alt in the first place
There’s a reason I don’t listen to these three stooges in the morning. It’s good to agree with Phil Perry on this one
I believe the defence was a no show. If offence moved and scored more, is there any reason to think that the defence would not be able to stop any of these offences they faced. Remember the Cinn game, Cincy fumbled on 1 yd line. If Cincy scored different game. Could easily be 0-5. Change -FEAR. Optics look terrible. Answer the simple ? what did everyone think their record would be after 5 games. Bad habits can filter in if they loose. Risk-reward is the ultimate reason for change. Is it worth the risk or do they need a sugar high?
Guys Drake just turned 22 years old recently, I would have kept him on the bench for this year. Jordan Love spent on the bench for 3 years before he was played and became a star last year. You have no talent around him at all! Why rush him? Why take such risk for what reasons? This year is a right off which we all were aware. We need to draft elite talent on the OL for next year and then throw him in.
5:04 L😆L they knew what they had in the Oline. Most common sense people said to take the Tackle at the top. They are arrogant and now you don’t even know if who’s teaching that position is any good. Dante was a wizard
The Oline got riddled with Injuries it’s not that they just completely stink.
I wouldn’t have been happy with any draft that didn’t involve drafting Drake Maye. There were more us than you. Which tackle would you have drafted instead of Josh Allen because you needed an oline (and a lot more.)
@@elizabeth9674 that proves not a lot of common sense. And building a team on what would make Elizabeth happy is not how you construct a team. I would have taken Alt or Latham
I see some people just don’t like the fact that Mayo is the coach. We can clearly see all the cheap shots. Like he’s the reason why team sucks.
Sure the Dolphins game would’ve been easier, but I view it as the final nail in the the coffin for Brisett. You couldn’t beat that? Time for the kid, we play tough teams sometimes. Boohoo
Drake should be able to make more throws and plays than Jacoby was able to. But are you really setting him up for success? The line may improve but can they maybe pick up a good receiver? Spend some money and get the kid some help?
7:26 he lost me a Mina…. She blows on ESPN.
Who knows maybe we can get a cpl halfback screens to slow that rush for once. Why am i designing plays that slow down a rush and avp is not?
There's risk-reward associated with everything.
Does Hardy ever contribute a decent take
It's not crazy or risky to playthe play you drafted #3 overall he has to play eventually and babying him doesn't protect him. This move was late if anything not early
11:53 owe what they get paid and the team isn’t going to fold what
A dumb point
Omggggg can yall stop comparing Drake Maye to friggin Mac Jones good lord! Yall obviously haven’t watched or payed attention to Drake Maye. Gahhh yall are terrible, thanks Phil for making sense.
Wait... did he actually just say "Belichick would've said here's the plan..."?!?!? 😂😂😂😂
No Belichick would've said "I'll do what's best for the team". And when one of these yahoos followed up with " Well, was this always the plan?, he would've said "The plan is always to do what's best for the team".
Nobody except Boston talking heads looking to fill airtime give a single sh*t about whether this was "The Plan!" or not (#theplan) We've all moved on to "okay, weird timing, but let's see how this goes, Go Pats!".
Drake is gonna start, which is what y'all spent the last few weeks screaming for, so just enjoy it, and stop making up storylines that don't mean anything, don't matter to the team, and that fans are not spending any time worrying about.
my fear is that the coaches are full blown bozos and will hold his development back. Mayo - bozo with corporate speak, AVP - a moron
Nah we already got rid of BB the bozo. We have real coaches now
@@gear6th679yeah ok kid you just made this list of Morons with that comment
I actually think he’s going to end up saving a lot of jobs and overcoming their inexperience
@@EastieRick not my fault BB didn't have a single clue about how to build an offense 😂
@@gear6th679 what’s with the stupid emoji, whos that for? Cause the guy you’re attempting to insult built 20 years of the most successful franchise in sports history. But here you go with your stupid emoji instead of using words cause you’re so inept.
Hurry. Get over to Gilette RIGHT NOW ! Word id Drake Maye has gone into the men's room to take a piss.
What the hell is wrong with these people. It's football. Stfu. He's not gonna get majority hurt lmao
Mac was never going to be elite. The more he was going to be was somwhere between 18-23. That doesn't win championships. Elite players were always going to be elite. Get over your MAC JONES PTSD and move on.
Not starting Drake Maye, cost the Pats two wins.. football is about winning not losing on purpose!!! Van Pelt is afraid of his own shadow and didn’t want to get blamed for ruining Maye!!!
There is rarely a perfect situation for 1st year Qbs, so do people only want the QB to play in ideal situations: that is not real life in the NFL and life in general.
Mac Jones argument is ridiculous. You guys are so lazy. Such low hanging fruit. Crazy
who cares about Mac Jones. they aren't the same humans. please drop it
This is Gerard Mayo trying to save his job. He’s sacrificing Drake Maye, exposing him to the disfunctioning offensive line while waiting for this bad group of receivers to uncover - which never comes. This move will not help anything. Maye cannot fix this. Like someone said here, the Patriots are gonna ruin another quarterback. What do you guys expect? Maye getting the Pats 2 more wins?? BIG DEAL! So what? Will that put people back in the seats? No! So as was said, Maye running for his life will undo all the progress he’s made. The bad footwork will return and worse, he’ll be forcing the ball into places he normally wouldn’t just to try and get something going. Then BAM! Pick 6. Or worse - he’ll run the ball and get killed because he doesn’t slide. He thinks hes a tight end or something when running it. And then Mr. Perry, where will the franchise be? They’ll have to draft another quarterback because they ruined yet ANOTHER fist round QB. Thhis is a BAD BAD move.
It's Jerod, not Gerard. And as far as his job goes, he's completely safe this year. Kraft knows Bill fucked this roster. It's going to take 3 years minimum to become a contender.
@@michaelmccourt4992 Yea - Belichick did indeed ruin the Pat’s roster. And Mayo I believe feels the pressure of his job security slowly eroding. Playing Maye now though shows how desperate Mayo is because the QB isn’t the problem. The patriots will be better served by waiting until next year to play Maye - giving the franchise time to address the offensive line through the draft and free agency, and giving Maye a stable pocket to develop his skills. .
@@lordaleron2912 I was totally against playing Maye at first, like definitely thought he should sit the whole year or do what Mahomes did and play at the very end. But the more I think about it, he can only progress so much through practice reps. Yes the o-line is paper thin but the more he gets used to playing in real game speed the better off he will be come next year. This year is a complete wash. Even with Maye, not sure if the Pats will win another game. But you know, let's just see how it goes. Maybe everyone will play harder knowing they have a better talent behind center. Maye will develop more meaningful connections with the receivers playing actual games.
How much can you learn on this sidelines for 5 weeks at 30 percent reps??
Maye needs more development
This situation wreaks of desperation. Basically throw the rookie in in an attempt to save our jobs… Oh boy… I am so disappointed in the Patriots organization.
Hardy just looks to be a pain in the butt. He succeeds every time. No thanks.
The Mac jones paranoia is crazy lmao
Exactly
Yup, Mac Jones came from an elite program where he had 5 star talent all around. He wasn’t used to failure. Drake had adversity all through college. I don’t think he will break so easily.
And Mac was good his rookie year too.
@@onestepcloser5925 Jones was set up to fail and he did. No surprises there. If they just did a few things differently he would hav'e been fine.
Best case scenario, Mac Jones was still a bottom 15 QB. He is a less accurate Kirk Cousins
These conversations are stupid
Middle of the week filler content
Has any team gone 1-16 yet? If not the Pats could tie the record for most losses in a season. That's exciting. 😂
Why are people babying Drake? He plays football he’s gonna get hit no matter what O -Line he has. If he’s good he will overcome that. Let him play! Why is every other player out there if the team just sucks. I can’t believe the guy said to bench Drake the rest of the season. He would’ve been the only top 5 pick in NFL HISTORY to not play in his first year not due to injury
I think 20 years of success has destroyed us. We are so desperate to feel that again and it’s making us insane. It’s the NFL and players get hurt. Can’t play scared.
It's because he's such a high draft pick that they wanted to protect their investment for the future. If he gets CRUSHED out there and injured a throwing arm or tears and ACL, it's not worth the risk. I also think they were hoping they would have an OL that settled down by this point. But they're reaping what they sow. Terrible free agency and they tried to draft Wallace and save face but it didn't work. 🤷
"If he's good he will overcome" no he absolutely won't. Patrick Mahomes would be bad on this offense. Maye is the future, and playing him now could either hurt him physically or developmentally. It might work.... but it never has before, not with this bad of an offense.
@@ryanc675 so are the patriots supposed to wait until they have an all-pro OLine? If Maye is better than Jacoby they have to play him. They will still be bad but there is no developing behind Jacoby Brisset. Practice can only help a player so much he has to play.
@@souljairfan it's just risky. He could get injured, or worst case scenario is he develops bad habits as a result of playing with a leaky line. Best case scenario is what, they win like 2 more games? It's not babying him, it's making sure you can support him.
Really thats your comment what if he stinks? Sound idiot
All I hear is blah blah blah the same BS.
Why would you want Maye to play with an O Line this bad??? You guys are out of your minds. He is gonna get brutalized
Every rookie qb joined a team with a bad oline and eventually they’ve figured it out. Jacoby got hit a lot bc sometimes he just held onto the ball forever. Maye was better by the end of preseason and he’s only gotten better since then. He’s used to running for his life from unc so we’ll see how it goes
So he sits all year, what week does he start next year? Can’t be week 1 because you won’t know if the line is good for 4-6 weeks.
And what if the line is bad next year, you’re going to bench him all next year?
And how do you know if this line is going to fixed anytime soon? Free agents don’t even want to come here so there absolutely no guarantee this line is ever going to be fixed
@@seanmoreau1471 100% not true that every rookie has a bad o line. Very few lines are actually as bad as this pats line
He plays the most protected position in the league, he'll be fine.
