Girl. I’m LOVING this new homesteading era because I’m learning all the things too! Gardening, making homemade bread, canning, etc. It’s all so much fun, and it’s awesome to see others who are just getting into it too! A new community!
Sarah, For your kitchenette floor check into like the large piece of clear hard plastic you'd lay down under and around a desk for your chair to roll on. They come in so many sizes, shapes and colors. It would cover the carpet but protect it from anything if spilled for easy clean up. Blessings!
I think you should go hardwood from the back of the couch to the wall, then add a big area rug under the dining set! It will be functional, look great and still have the warmth with the area rug 🤍
I'd remove the carpet from the whole area behind the couch and do waterproof vinyle "wood" flooring (there's some that look exactly like hard wood flooring), then get a big washabke rug for under the dining table and a matching runner for in front of the kitchenette. I've seen a lot of new builds w this set up and it looks great. Being in the midwest, you need to keep carpet in the tv area, not just for coziness and warmth, but for sound absorbtion too.
Sarah there are semi hard plastic mats you can put on the carpet to protect it. Some people use the mats on their carpet and put their office chairs on top so they can move smoothly. Maybe that could be an option?! 😊
After I watched this video, it suggested the halloween 2016 vlog to me. I just watched and my insides MELTED. Those beautiful, angelic children!! I loved watching it, and I'm so glad you left these old videos for us to see. xoxo
100% agree with you Sarah! I need subtitles in movie theaters. I always have them on while watching movies at home and I understand the movie better because I can read what they are saying rather than wondering what they just said. Lol
Ok what if you did go with that line and tile the floor BUT you can put a heating element underneath so that in the colder months, you have the option to turn the floor heat on so it stays warm and still gives that cozy feel. I just think the carpet will end up getting ruined in the kitchenette if you keep it as-is
Get a large washable (Ruggable sponsorship??!) rug for under your table and a matching smaller washable rug for the floor in front of the kitchenette appliances if you dont want to mess with the carpet. I dont think taking out the carpet around the kitchenette would look bad at all! Since its a small area, maybe you could choose a cool patterned tile for the floor and coordinate it with the backsplash!
Definitely put up a bird house or feeder somewhere you wouldn’t mind them being! I live right next to a Costco, albeit in an apartment, and I think it’s great! My boyfriend has the membership level that gives you cash-back and we only put gas in at Costco (way cheaper) the cash-back at the end of the year pays for the membership plus some.
I’ve seen the partial tiled floors all the time for a little kitchenette. So I don’t think it will look dumb at all, but an alternative if you could do is possibly a big mat that you could put right in front of the kitchenette.
I’m dealing with a whole lot of water damage right now and I’ve made the decision that any area in my home that can be effected by water the floors have to be waterproof. I have to now replace carpet in my bedroom and I have vinyl flooring in the kitchen and laundry room and those have to be replaced also. It’s a mess. So I would just think about what is something does need cleaned up. How easy is it going to be to clean it up. I’m getting alllll tile I can find lol
For the kitchenette, get one of those giant runner like kitchen floor mats. The Cushion ones. You can get it the same color or close to, and lay it on top of the carpet. It should protect the carpet just fine and be easy to clean.
The little bowls the kids made are cute. I like the ponytail palm plant by the bowls... Very cute! I tried a Poppie for the first time today. I tried the Raspberry Rose 🌹 flavor it was so good 👍😊 I only got one to try and I wish I would have got more...oh well, next time 😊 I love 💓 your vlogs and family. Have tons of fun with your kids this summer 🏝️🌞
I’d do either a cute oversized mat or put in flooring just in that area. I don’t think it would look weird. It would definitely look weirder to have carpet going up to a fridge and sink lol I’d definitely keep the carpet like you said to keep it cozy
In your basement, take out the carpet from behind the couch to the wall where your kitchen space will be. Put in vinyl plank flooring and get an area rug to put under the dining room table. Or, cut out an area of carpet where your kitchenette is and put tile or linoleum there.
You can put the large anti fatigue mats down by the sink area, we have those by ours and it works well, I just can't get rid of carpet, to me it makes the room cozy and makes it feel like home and you can put a large area rug under the table or just leave as is
Succulent potting soil and water them way less than you think you have to… or use ice cubes. (Yes to rocks in the bottom). When they are happy they get BIG with happy roots. It’s a pain to separate and repot. I still love them tho. The flooring… we have carpet in our basement and we chose the “wood look” ceramic tiles at our Wet Bar area. It’s a narrow long area.
For the water bottles - they make silicone gripper "boots" for the bottom. They help to keep them from sliding and they also help with them getting so damaged.
oooooooooooooooooooo the Shatter Me series??? I just binged all 6 books in a week and i fell HARD for those books. They are at the top of my favorites list for this year. Would love to see your book content come back! I know some people didnt like it, but im still here for it girl!
My aunts basement in Illinois (Addison area) had carpet in the kitchen area but the laundry room that also had a shower had tile in the basement. Another storage area was the tile as well. Her basement flooded though and ruined the carpet.
To keep your succulents alive do not over water! Most succulents are dormant because you are not in a subtropical area. So just water when dry and don’t over saturate the soil.
Chicken wire ball to block the area where the birds build the nest. Or block it off some other way if possible? Love all the home vlogging!! I’m making improvements to my house too.❤
You can totally do a hard floor and a transition to the carpet have it meet the cabinets or like an inch or so further. Or if/when you do all the floor you can do a heated floor.
I think just flooring the corner where the kitchen will be will look good make it a statement since it will stand out regardless. Basements are cold so you can make it look really sleek with mixed metals browns and blacks.
I would put one of those mats that people use for rolling desk chairs on carpet in the basement. You can probably get one cut to fit the area and the cleanup would be easy
I need some of that starter! You can definitely do half the floor at that post. Get a threshold to blend it. Or buy a carpet cleaner because someone is spilling lol
I highly recommend changing the floor around the kitchenette in the basement. One of my friends had a similar set up when we were in high school and that was out hang out spot, which is what I'm assuming you want for your kids. They did everything they could to keep the floor clean, they put a kitchen mat in front of the sink, they had the carpet cleaned every year. At one point their pipes froze while they were on vacation (I'm from Dekalb so you know how the basements get in the winter) and they had to pull up ALL of the carpet and they found so.much.mold. under the carpet around the kitchenette. It wasn't from the pipes bursting it was from years of us washing cups in the sink and accidentally spraying water on the floor, dropping pizza slices on the floor and not being able to properly clean it up, and spilling liters of pop, and even when we told them we accidentally made a mess (they were so cool about it so we always made sure to tell them right away) there was just no way to keep that area clean enough to not eventually build up mold. The carpet cleaning only did enough to make sure that it never got into the actual carpet where someone could have seen it and fixed the problem.
For longer shorts you may try old navy! I don't usually like their style but last summer they had crazy options for shorts at like $25-30. All kinds of styles and in seam lengths and a great range of sizes. I haven't checked this year but they'd be stupid not to bring them back!
Re: Basement floors Do the tile starting behind the couch, and hear me out… HEATED FLOORS! It’ll be perfect! I def think tile is best, you won’t have to stress about food being all over the carpet. Maybe if you are suuuper against tile… an area rug under the table to catch any food?
I would do just a little corner section where the kitchen is at! Like a rounded edge just by the kitchenette area👀 that way a majority of the basement is still carpeted and the sole kitchen area is wood/tile. There’s a lot of the carpet/tile “connector” pieces now unlike before where it was just silver or gold lol.
You would have loved the opera that I went to. It was midsummer night's dream but the best part was that above the stage they actually had closed captioning for the entire show 😅
I think you should put in new flooring from couch back. Typically just a transition piece separates it from carpet. As far as the “cold floors” you could install heated flooring underneath if you do tile.
I saw someone with a very similar basement setup and they did what you were saying would look stupid, but I swear to you it won’t! I would just do from the doorframe of that bathroom over to the other wall. You can always get a little washable area rug to warm it up. It will look great with a rug.
It absolutely will not look silly to have just the kitchen area floor changed. I think it would look bad actually not changing the floor! Completely understand your dilemma with the cold though.
Not sure what sizes she’s in now, but Old Navy’s women’s jean shorts have multiple inseam lengths. I also just got the mom shorts at AE and they’re a good length!
I have partial carpet, partial linoleum in my house and it doesn’t look dumb 😂😂. I think that would be your best option because I agree that you should keep the carpet in the cozy part.
To get an idea of what it would look like if part was carpet and some was not, look at where your 1st floor leads into your basement. Like right where the hardwood turns into carpet when you open the door to the basement. That should give you at least a bit of an idea. A lot of apartments have it where your kitchen is like faux tile and then the living room and rest of the house is carpet.
Hey SRV, love the vlogs lately, they always make my day! I was super excited and subsequently disappointed with the advertised Costco run. I would really love to see a dedicated Costco haul so we can see what you stock up on when you're there. It might seem boring but I mean, it isn't all that different from your empties videos. We like to know what you like, no matter how mundane it seems to you. My suggestion for your basement flooring issue would be hardwood or laminate all over and big soft fluffy rugs on areas that are for being cozy.
@sarahhhrae I was also thinking that when you do your empties videos (which we all love btw), you can give us feedback on products that you have purchased from Costco too, especially when it's something that you're trying for the first time.
We have a large plastic mat in oir basement kitchen area. Like a mat some people put under their desk chair. Its clear and doesnt look weird or anything
I have a full kitchen in my basement, I'm talking sink, fridge, oven, microwave, the whole shabang. The kitchen part is vinyl plank floors (no real wood, just in case of moisture), the rest is carpet. The carpet people can roll (tuck it under itself) the carpet to meet the edge of the hard flooring. So the transition is smooth, not a strip or anything. I was nervous about it getting torn up, but it's held up for 5 years. We also have a table similar to yours - so we ended up putting a rug down underneath it, which partially covers most of the transition anyway. It sounds weird but I could send you pictures if you wanted.
For flooring, and someone may have mentioned, they make anti fatigue mats like they use in kitchens for garages so they’re big. I’d start there before tearing up flooring.
Idea for kitchenette: What if you do a kitcehn against the wall & then a bar top/island (but still attached to the wall) where the chairs for the bar will still be carpet, but the kitchen will be tile…. However, you won’t be able to really see the tile/carpet cutoff because the bar will hide the fact that there is tile!
Sarah. The basement floor they can cut out an area of the carpet and put a nice saddle (not sure what it’s called) to divide it. Just add a nice floor that matches the carpet. I did it in my old house and my sister did it in hers. I had them oval the outline and it looked nice. Also have them start it at the table so easy clean up.
Dollar Tree has some pretty cute faux succulents believe it or not if you decide to switch up the real ones. Loving seeing this side of you. From Frank & Oscar to a big ole garden! 💚🌿🪴🍅🥦🌰🫑🌽🥦🥕🥬🥔🥒💚🌿🪴
I've seen a lot of times people do flooring just in the L shape of the cabinetry if that makes sense. So like cabinet end to cabinet end, like a little rectangle.
succulents are very easy to care for, they dont need often water. i have a few but sometimes they are already half dead when you buy them but you cant see it straight away.. 🤷♀ i also recommend a zz plant. nice dark green in colour, they need only little water and almost no sunlight but they can get big and they are toxic to animals.. i dont know if your cats are munching the plants. (my birds do lol)
I also have tile where my wet bar area is BUT I wonder if a couple of those like hard plastic "office chair" mats with the teeth on the underside that dig in the carpet so they don't move would be nice by the sink area? My Grandpa's entire basement is carpeting and he has a sink and stuff down there too with just a rug and there's never been any issues but some folks and kids just aren't very aware of the messes they're making so I dunno Momma 😂🤣😂 I would also just put a large rug under the table. 🤷♀️
For the basement: Get a low pile (I think that’s the term) for under the dining table. As far as the kitchenette area it won’t look weird/bad at all to but a waterproof flooring there! When it goes from a tile/waterproof flooring to carpet I don’t think it looks bad or weird at all, think of carpet in a hallway and then the transition to the tile in the bathroom. Totally normal! Also a lot of builders when building homes will do tile/hardwood whatever in the kitchen then the rest of the area has carpet and it’s an upgrade cost to do all one flooring.
every apartment i lived in had lino in the kitchen only with transitions, so it seems normal. usually it was some weird flooring they got on deal. To keep it modern and practical, I'd just use a tone of laminate or lpv that's the same tone as your carpet, then it'll 'read' as a solid color but still be easy to keep clean (less weird???).
I think you should do the floor in a triangle from the door to the corner to the window. If you do, it would enphasize that its a corner kitchen, especially if you pick a triangle design on the tile/flooring.
For the basement sink what about getting some of those big thick restaurant like mats with the cushion like they sell at Costco and Sams. You can place /line them up around the splash and crumb zones. That or you can go grandma style and get some of those clear runners with the spikes at the bottom for that area too.
I have a deaf friend who uses subtitles and she just has to ask the movie theater for a little caption screen. It sits in the cup holder and has a bendy arm so she can position the captions in her view while watching the movie. It’s pretty cool!
The flooring will look fine if you start behind the couch. Kitchenette on carpet is a nightmare especially if there are plumbing issues or leaks. Just get LPF for that side of the room and under the dining table put a rug to warm it back up
So if you take carpet out, you could put rugs/mats down. Put like a ruggable under the tablet so it can be easily cleaned, and then put coordinating little mats in the kitchenette area. Maybe even a runner. That way they can help with the coldness.
I have hundreds of succulents but I’m lucky that in California they grow easily. Do not overwater only water when soil dry. The rocks at the bottom of pot works😄👍
I love what you have done to your home. I think you should put tile around just the kitchen area. If you have a water leak it would be easier to clean up and you would not have to replace it. I am loving the gardening and recipes!
get the carpet around kitchenette taken out put down Vinal and there are silver metal strips that connect one flooring type to another also use mats etc where join is if you feel the need to cover join but get the carpet up or wet carpet creates a whole other set of problems ,after see downstairs take out to by couch so under table is vinal as well then over time get mats rugs etc to create cosy vibe while it is user friendly
I wonder if it would work to put an area rug underneath the table/chairs in the basement? Then it may be less strange to replace the floors only in the kitchen area ^^
Have a beautiful full finish basement we have 3 types of flooring down there.. tile in the kitchen bathroom floor, hardwood in the large bedroom space ( with an area rug ) huge closet area, door that matches the floor for that area then the rest of the huge living space is carpeted, they made like a long series of almost a larger not as pronounced scalloping alongside the tile for the carpeting with a def lip that delineates the carpet from the tile it looks seamless. Tile is the same hues as the carpeting.
I looked it up and it seems that most kitchenettes in basements have a outline of tile of 3-2 feet around the cabinets! So that could be something to consider maybe! ☺️
Girl. I’m LOVING this new homesteading era because I’m learning all the things too! Gardening, making homemade bread, canning, etc. It’s all so much fun, and it’s awesome to see others who are just getting into it too! A new community!
So refreshing to see her incorporate more sustainability in a modern lifestyle. It feels attainable
Sarah, For your kitchenette floor check into like the large piece of clear hard plastic you'd lay down under and around a desk for your chair to roll on. They come in so many sizes, shapes and colors. It would cover the carpet but protect it from anything if spilled for easy clean up. Blessings!
My exact thought too! Sure came in handy when I dumped my coffee on my lap last week 😂
Maybe put a birdhouse up for the birds so they'll stop building a nest.
We were in the process only feelings. God's the burke '/!
I buy my daughters shorts at Old Navy a lot. Last time I purchased we were able to search by inseam which made it easier to avoid the daisy dukes. 😂
I was going to recommended Old Navy too! Great sandals and swim as well!!
Someone just recommended Old Navy to me for 10yo who's curves are starting to pop and we had great luck finding shorts.
That’s exactly what I was thinking too!

The company
Nahhhh my boy Crash was about to get in big trouble! 😂 the mom voice came out
Coffee: ready

100% agree with you Sarah! I need subtitles in movie theaters. I always have them on while watching movies at home and I understand the movie better because I can read what they are saying rather than wondering what they just said. Lol
I think there are hard of hearing times in theaters that show subtitles. I think, I’m not 100% sure. But I personally love subtitles also.
Or they have a screen that goes in the cup holder that can have the CC but only some movies do it
Ok what if you did go with that line and tile the floor BUT you can put a heating element underneath so that in the colder months, you have the option to turn the floor heat on so it stays warm and still gives that cozy feel. I just think the carpet will end up getting ruined in the kitchenette if you keep it as-is
I love how intentional you are with your language. Words have power and you try to put the beat of yourself out.
Sarah! After you feed the sourdough you don’t want to screw the lid on all the way. Leave the jar a little loose so that the air can escape

We live in a small neighborhood behind Costco, and I love it. Having a gas station and the store right there is super convenient.
What about rubber or foam flooring for the kitchen area? They've even got some that looks like wood tiles, but FOAM! ❤
I’ve seen the partial tiled floors all the time for a little kitchenette. So I don’t think it will look dumb at all, but an alternative if you could do is possibly a big mat that you could put right in front of the kitchenette.

Yea for the rug area just put a heavy duty floor runner/ protector. I have some from the brand Resilia

I LOVE the dining table and chairs you showed in this video! Could you tell me where they are from? 🙏
I have been saying this FOREVER, they NEED to add subtitles to some showings. The deaf community deserves it. But i as well would love it!
For the carpet issue, you could try those clear plastic 'rugs' that people put in carpeted offices so they can do around on rolly chairs.
my kitchenette has a section of tile and it turns into carpet at the living space and it looks fine!
You can totally do a hard floor and a transition to the carpet have it meet the cabinets or like an inch or so further. Or if/when you do all the floor you can do a heated floor.

I wonder if you could get a thick clear large plastic mat to put down. Decades ago my dad had a clear plastic mat for his office chair.

I highly recommend changing the floor around the kitchenette in the basement. One of my friends had a similar set up when we were in high school and that was out hang out spot, which is what I'm assuming you want for your kids. We had a kitchen in our basement. My parents did a bar type counter ( stools on carpet. Then it was hard wood in the kitchen. It was a nice flow.
I think you should tile (love the wood looking tile) from the support beam back, if not, definitely in the kitchen area! good luck!
For longer shorts you may try old navy! I don't usually like their style but last summer they had crazy options for shorts at like $25-30. All kinds of styles and in seam lengths and a great range of sizes. I haven't checked this year but they'd be stupid not to bring them back!

Girl! The cabinet above the stove is for the menudo pots, the one you only use twice a year but you still have it because you might need it 😂
You would have loved the opera that I went to. It was midsummer night's dream but the best part was that above the stage they actually had closed captioning for the entire show 😅
For the carpet in the basement just get one of those large mats i believe they make some that look like tile or wood.

Congratulations on the gardening successes, it’s all looking very impressive! I’m with you on the kale, I don’t know how my husband likes that stuff 😂
I agree I only eat kale when I put it in zuppa toscana

I work at Home Depot flooring and a lot of ppl do carpet that buts up to laminate etc
Idea for kitchenette:
What if you do a kitcehn against the wall & then a bar top/island (but still attached to the wall) where the chairs for the bar will still be carpet, but the kitchen will be tile….
Hey Sarah thanks for the peek at Ashley miss seeing her on your videos....wow RIP to Jaden's pony, didn't realize it was that long 😮
Dollar Tree has some pretty cute faux succulents believe it or not if you decide to switch up the real ones.
To keep it modern and practical, I'd just use a tone of laminate or lpv that's the same tone as your carpet, then it'll 'read' as a solid color but still be easy to keep clean (less weird???).
use a computer desk matt, the ones that are clear with the pokey bottoms by the sink!
Maybe get a ruggable runner or small size rug for the kitchenette. That way you can always throw it in the machine if there’s a spill
What if you put a large outdoor rug that you can clean separately and is water resistant.
Could you put a mat over the carpet? Like you put at your desk for rolling chairs? We have a rectangle one from ikea that I’m guessing would be cool
I think you should do the floor in a triangle from the door to the corner to the window. If you do, it would enphasize that its a corner kitchen, especially if you pick a triangle design on the tile/flooring.
What about staining the concrete.? I've been in brand new build with nice floors that were stained concrete.
You can always find a set and put on under the table and in the kitchen area
For the basement sink what about getting some of those big thick restaurant like mats with the cushion like they sell at Costco and Sams. You can place /line them up around the splash and crumb zones. That or you can go grandma style and get some of those clear runners with the spikes at the bottom for that area too.
I think you should get artwork for the walls in the arcade area. Maybe game posters or things like that
I have a deaf friend who uses subtitles and she just has to ask the movie theater for a little caption screen.
Yes girl 07' the year I graduated lol. My boyfriend at the time was obsessed. Ughhh hate thinking of that year and 08'
I wonder if it would work to put an area rug underneath the table/chairs in the basement? Then it may be less strange to replace the floors only in the kitchen area ^^
Have a beautiful full finish basement we have 3 types of flooring down there.. tile in the kitchen bathroom floor, hardwood in the large bedroom space ( with an area rug ) huge closet area, door that matches the floor for that area then the rest of the huge living space is carpeted, they made like a long series of almost a larger not as pronounced scalloping alongside the tile for the carpeting with a def lip that delineates the carpet from the tile it looks seamless. Tile is the same hues as the carpeting.
What about an office type mat for the kitchen, it can go right over the carpet, it’s easy to clean and you can put it just where you need it
I looked it up and it seems that most kitchenettes in basements have a outline of tile of 3-2 feet around the cabinets! So that could be something to consider maybe! ☺️
Most studio apartments with carpets have one patch of tile for the kitchen, so it should look pretty normal.
