    It is very sad that the Java Sparrow is banned in some areas. They're fantastic birds, especially if you make a friend.

    • @5skdm
      @5skdm ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its appearently endangered in its original area (which is also where i live, java), so it gets extra protection. But by this point i assume the international population of this bird is big (because they are popular cage birds), so i dont think the ban isnt that relevant for most places.
      Edit: some places ban the java sparrow due to concerns of it being a pest to agriculture, but many places dont ban them.

    Oh My GOSH I'm so Excited! I was wishing for that species spotlight a while ago and it happened! I wasn't able to watch it when it was uploaded, but now I have finally time to enjoy this! Today is a good day.
    I love how much scientific information you share at the beginning. And nightshade is still my absolute favorite of your flock. He's just way too adorable. Compared to my gouldian finches they have so big beaks, their heads are just beak and cheek :)
    What's also interesting is that some species like the java or zebra fnch love to cuddle with their flock members, while some are more on the "prude" site like my gouldian finches - even mates don't cuddle or preen each other. It's so sad that your finches didn't clcik with each other. I often heard that females finches can be quite mean, but I didn't think it would be that bad. But it's nice that she finally found her mr. right. And nightshade is really in love with you, so I guess all's well that ends well.
    I also heard that some finch species are extremely picky when it comes to finding their mate. The long-tailed finch is known for being very hard to pair up. Even in big flocks they might never choose a partner and if a couple is separated they will never get a new partner and instead get extremely depressed. Some other finch species are more open-minded when it comes to choosing their partner.
    For example my male red headed gouldian finch WAS in a "relationship" with another female of his previous flock. But after a couple of months of flirting and being "mates" there was a newcomer and the female just ditched my poor boy. He got really depressed about it, while the female was starting to build a nest with her new man. Their previous owner was really heartbroken about it. Now he's in an all male group with me and seems to be pretty happy, still sad though. My boy was sitting next to the nest of the new couple, waiting for her to come back to him etc.
    Also thanks for emphasizing the difference between parrots/parakeets and finches and the importance of wide cages. They can't really climb or use their beaks to hold onto stuff like budgies, they heavily rely on their wings for moving around their aviary and exercising, so perches should be placed like in nightshades cage - at the opposite side of each other, so they can fly from perch a to b easily.
    And I completely agree with the enrichment: Shredding toys, swings and hanging greens is the way to go even for other finch species! All of my boys love to sleep on swings, they feel the most secure on them. Another cool enrichment for them is potted grass or a small container with bird safe soil where you just sprinkle seeds over. They love to search for the seeds, pick them and even if the seeds sprout that's just perfect enrichment for them.
    There's something especially endearing about finches bathing. Nightshade looks so cute. Thank you so so much for that informative, detailed and of course cute video! :D

    Is anyone here in the comments located in eastern USA and either is a breeder or know someone who breeds Javas? We're very interested in acquiring some and progressing into breeding them ourself. They are legal where we live, so no worries there.
    We're absolutely head-over-heels for these little guys and want to not only experience their company ourself, but also make it easier for others to find these lovely birds. We're currently a canary keeper and will be breeding them as well.

    I'm in the UK and used to breed a variety of finches in cages and in an aviary. In the aviary I bred Zebra finches and Bengalese finches using the small nest boxes appropriate for very small finches. I also had some normal and fawn Java sparrows in there but didn't intend to breed them. However, a pair of fawns took over one of the small nest boxes and they hatched and reared five babies. One day shortly after they hatched I came home from work and found one of the babies on the aviary floor, it appeared to be close to death but I popped it back into the nest box and it survived. Other birds I kept were Budgerigars, Cockatiels and Canaries. I planned to also breed Gouldian finches and bought my first pair, unfortunately my wife decided she no longer wanted to be with me and moved out. Our house was sold and all my birds plus the aviary.

      @@Dhruv_Dogra Thank you my friend, I'm currently a 77 year old cancer survivor living in a small flat so there will be no more birds for me. I still enjoy seeing the wild birds though, especially in the spring when the migrants arrive. There's a man made lake near to where I live with lots of reed beds. In the spring a good number of Reed Warblers breed there and to a lesser extent Sedge Warblers. Two or three pairs of House Martins nest at the block of flats where I live.

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, its best to let him out of the cage. At first he will be disoriented and may not go back in the cage for a while. He will go back in when hungry or thirsty. Place a small piece of spray millet in the cage when you want him to go back in. Also say a word like bedtime or cage time or any word you like so he understands to go back in. This can take a while to get used to a routine. Talk to him and offer food from your hand.
      Spend alot of time with him so he can get used to you and trust you.

      Hi, I have never heard of a Dunnock before so I had to look them up. They look like our Sparrows. They are adorable.
      It's a 50/50 change that they will get along. It's really hard to say.
      Since it's a wild bird you would have to have It's feces tested and or other tests as wild birds can carry many diseases compared to pet birds.
      You wouldn't want to pass on a disease to your pet birds.
      He must be so adorable!

    You named all the names that are used by maybe tiny fraction of some odd people somewhere but not it's main name that is its official name and used by everyone. Java Finch. Never did I meet anyone calling them Java Sparrow. 😂
    Padda Oryzivora is no longer it's scientific name... 😁 It's Lonchura Oryzivora.
    They sexually mature FAR earlier than 12-16 months. Nothing exceptional to see Javas 7 months old successfully breeding and raising chicks.
    Their songs greatly vary, the rattle your male has is extremely rare (his song is actually very limited he probably wasn't exposed to adult singing males for long enough) I have seen only one male out of 300-350 I have seen and listen to in my life with that in his song.
    Black headed Java Finch is actually not a mutation. It happens if the birds are not exposed to sunlight enough before and during the moulting period and have insufficient nutrition. Such a bird will go back to normal color if the conditions are right.

      Thanks for your input. Around me they are called Java Sparrows. I haven't heard that about the black headed javas. I have seen someone that housed them outside and they had a black head, so it may be a new mutation.
