You're one of the sweetest, kindest, most enjoyable youtubers I watch. You're so generous, and a fantastic teacher. Thank you ever so much for sharing with us, your fun personality and artistic expertise. I have 2 of your books, and want to get the others as soon as possible! May you have a happy and prosperous, healthy New Year! ❤
Very generous of you to do this presentation. I’ve always enjoyed your videos but never thought of the monetary aspect. Thank you for your most valuable talents, including your honesty. Let us hope for peace and prosperity in the new year.
I am retired and my passion now is watercolors. I don't think I have the energy to start a TH-cam channel. But, I do love and enjoy all your videos. Thank you Liz for taking the TH-cam plunge. I wish you the very best and I'll be watching.
Well Liz, this was really illuminating thank you so much for sharing this. I had no idea how earning money from TH-cam worked. Certainly food for thought. I see no reason why your channel shouldn’t grow and grow. Love it. xx
I love your videos! Thank you for being so transparent with the behind the scenes stuff for those of us who have idly thought “maybe I could start a TH-cam channel” so we can make a better informed decision. I’m impressed with how well your iPad does for filming and editing! Do you just use the apps that came with it? I love the community of “smaller” art TH-camrs and their subscribers. I enjoy reading through the supportive and helpful comments. The really large channels (like the ones listed in that article) can become a magnet for trolls, and that’s just not fun for anyone. Anyway, thank you for all your lovely videos this year. Happy holidays!
This was so much fun to listen to, Liz! Thank you so much for being so forthright and for sharing your perspective. I've loved your tutorials and always look forward to the next one
I thought it might interest you, my channel is about the same size, and I got 877k views and earned about $6000 in a year : ) Your channel is lovely! Maybe we could do a colab in 2025!
Even if I have no interest in launching a TH-cam channel, I appreciate knowing how behind the scenes works. You explain it very well and above all with great honesty. Thank you and happy new year 2025 Liz!
😂 I would love to hear a mortgage advice from you, that would be the most interesting experience no doubt! Thank you for your videos and looking forward to many more in the upcoming year. Happy New year!
@mixedmedialife7916 No, no, that's not Liz at all... It would be something along the lines " how to keep your house and have no nonsense art supplies as well " 👍
Thank you for sharing that information Liz. I have been watching you for a few years now and absolutely love your art and your way of teaching, many thanks. Best wishes for the coming year and beyond 😊
It's very cool, though! 🎉 You said you're not going to sell your soul over reviewing a couple of pens 😂 Well said! Your authenticity as a creator is always going to be appreciated by your viewers :)
Thank you so much for sharing this!!! I found you through your customized shoe video and stayed to follow because you are delightful! Hope you have an even better 2025 - thanks for the inspiration! 🎉
Thank you for sharing! Can you imagine what other methods (like in the old days) you would have to do to get 1 million people to see your art, learn from your experience, and share your love for watercolors? TH-cam can be a source of inspiration, education, humor, or pure personal narcissism - it’s good to see a means for artists to get paid for some of their work and creativity- thank you! Have a great new year!
Thank for that, I have no intention of stating a youtube channel 😂, but being curious about things🧐 I appreciate you sharing, what is essentially no one’s business but your own.👍👍👍
Dear Liz, thank you for sharing this very honest and transparent report about your You Tube channel. It is good to demystify the "rag to riches" and glamour myth behind starting a You Tube channel. I find your channel a valuable place to learn and you a capable tutor and artist. Thanks again!
You are the queen of watercolour TH-camr 😉 thank you for all the time you spend sharing your passion with us, it’s priceless. Happy new year 2025, I wish you all the best !
Thank you Liz! You're videobis very timely! I'm getting my first filming done next week after three months of research. I have been following your videos for a while and bought ine of your books and am a great admirer of your work. Hopefully I can get my first video actually published by mid January 😊 xx
Dear Liz, Thank you for all the work you've done to make your channel so informative and helpful, as well as enjoyable! All the best to you and your family for a happy, healthy New Year!
Thanks for sharing! I got monetised (somehow) in February this year, but I’m currently only getting the minimum payment about once every 3 months! It would be great if I can shrink that gap in 2025. I started off deliberately not having a schedule for doing videos because I didn’t want to end up resenting or hating it, so I’ve just been doing them when the mood takes me, but I think maybe I need to be a bit more serious about it now, but still not toooooo strict with myself haha. I always enjoy your videos!
I appreciate how forthcoming you are to share this with your audience. So interesting to know how TH-cam channels work. Very enlightening. And I hope 2025 will be an even more profitable year for you😃👍 Happy New Year Liz!
I'm so happy I "found" your channel. Lately I find myself wanting to be less rigid in my approach to art and your approach fits the bill nicely. I'm hooked and as long as you stick around I'm not going anywhere either.
Thank you for this Liz. I am a recent subscriber. Have been painting for 6 years (since I retired) and love water color and water color with ink. I just bought myself your book on portraits for Christmas and I really like it. I need to need to be more comfortable with the process and less hung up on the likeness. Live model figure sketching weekly helps.
Thank you Liz for these honest words. I started my channel in january and really working on it in july. Once the comments start it is really amazing to have a conversation with people who watched my video. I love your channel an I hope you will continue for a long time. I wish you great earnings. You deserve it 🎉
So interesting! You rock! I feel like there is definitely a lot of prep that goes on behind the scenes before you make a video because you can’t go on unprepared and look like an amateur. I have pretty much learned everything I know about art from TH-cam and maybe just maybe it’s time to share. I would definitely have to sit down and really work out what I would film. Anyway, thank you so much for this and all the stuff that you do..❤
Thanks for sharing your stats Liz, it’s so interesting to see the growth and hear your perspective, TH-cam is such a creative positive place to be! You’re right about the confidence aspect I am amazed how it has helped my self esteem. Looking forward to seeing you more next year! X
This is not only an “illuminating “ but also interesting video for me, someone with no aspirations of becoming a TH-cam content creator. And I want to thank you for all of the wonderful water color videos you make - I learn a lot from them and they inspire me. All the best to you!
Thank you so much for this clear video. I assumed most creators are not getting wealthy with their channel. I appreciate your explanations. Keep creating and sharing.😘
Well done Liz. A very informative video. As are all of yours. Have had great fun learning techniques from you....I have modelling paste and stencils now.
Thank you for a great year, and wishing you a happy and prosperous new year. Looking forward to all the wonderful videos you will create in 2025 and inspiration for me (and I love your long format videos).
Thank you for sharing this. I’ve recently started an urban sketching channel, for the same reasons as you - I actually enjoy it - so it’s really interesting to get an idea of any revenue I might earn in the future. Good luck with the channel, I hope it continues to grow (I really enjoy your videos).
Happy New Year Liz! Thank you for sharing this again this year. I hope you didn't put the deposit down on that Rolls did you?? 🤣 I watch all your videos and you inspire me to be braver with my watercolour. I will be watching your videos again this year 😃
Thank you so much for sharing your insights, and for being so transparent. As you’ve mentioned, this is something a lot of people always wonder about. I’ve enjoyed your videos for several years now and they are always so inspiring and fun to watch. I remember one of the first ones I saw was your ink removal technique? I’m not getting the name right. I believe it was with crows. And your use of gold leaf astounded me. Mine results in me covered with glue and little bits of gold. It’s so funny. Anyway, thank you again. I look forward to 2025 and hope that you have a very productive one, to the degree you choose, and that maybe TH-cam will fork over more of the money that it makes to the creators. Have a happy new year.
I'm so glad I found you. You are real. Love to watch. You have helped me to find a less anxious life. May never sell a painting because I am happy giving them out. Wishing you peace and happiness as well.
Hello Liz, I would like to say thank you for continuing your channel! 💖 I'm glad it is as enjoyable and useful for you as it is for us. I'm sorry you made a little less £ this year. That's so strange! I admit that I usually press "Skip" on the commercials, but I will let some play out now. 😉 I still don't know who those other TH-cam people are, but I'm sure I wouldn't like them. I tend to rotate between different artists that I like. Once I began watching one artist from the UK, several others were recommended to me! Well, Congratulations 🎉 on getting over 50,000 subscribers! I wish you best of luck and prosperity for your channel next year! Take care, and I look forward to watching more. ☺️
You say a live is too hard, I think your edited videos are too hard. Lol I rather go live once a week instead of filming, editing, posting. But I do appreciate your videos. You are such an encouragement to us artists.
@ Oh yes. Things do go wrong. 🤦🏻♀️I filmed the side of my head the whole live instead of my painting. 🖼️ I was so upset. But most the time it works out ok.
@LizChadertonArt I know Julia Trickey also a uk artist has a course on there. reachibng out to her could be useful. I'm just a user with about 15 courses. What Ilke about them is that you get to know the artist, their influences, their material, and learn about their technique. It's more indept than a you tube video. (p.s. I just found your school so will be buying a few courses. Prices are very reasonable!)
Hi Liz. Thanks for your enjoyable and educational videos. I found you earlier this year while searching for watercolor tuition and you became one of my favourite go to's. Your work is beautiful and inspirational and I can only hope to become nearly as good (maybe after a few years!) I hope you're always able to keep pursuing your passion. Thanks again 💐
You hit the nail on the head when you said you found your tribe. I think a lot of us follow channels where we just really like and appreciate the character of the human behind it all! I don't want to give away any of the numbers in your video in my comment here but I did work it out based on the hours you said per video that in Canadian dollars you earn about $30 an hour. That is in fact pretty good for a side hustle! And as you said there are so many other benefits including people doing your courses and buying your artwork. I do have one question. Occasionally you will make a video that is not specifically about watercolour, for example something about mixed media or how to make a round journal. I'm curious abt how that affects your numbers. I personally enjoy all those videos but I wondered if you take a hit in views because of them - or the opposite? Thank you for everything you gave us this year. One of the things I like best about your channel is your intelligence! All the best for 2025 Liz, including a big boost in your numbers🎉😊🎨🖌️
Thank you! The advice is usually to decide on your niche and stick to it when you are setting up the channel. You can deviate more once you are established. I made the conscious decision to follow my own interest rather than doing the thing which would get the most views over and over. If I get bored or fed up with making videos I will stop. So I think I would get more views from pure watercolour tutorials, but that’s not what I want. I did a film last year about the money side of TH-cam which got 200,000 views 😳 but I would feel a fraud if I tried to do more like that just to get clicks.
Thanks for being so open about utube. I’m happy you earn something but, am more interested in your creativity, & enjoy your little chats & experimenting, also your paintings. Happy 2025. Thank you.
Wow, that WAS mind blowing! I’d no idea how the system worked. TH-cam is making a huge amount of money from those of you who have channels. Thank you for doing this video. The biggest take away for me was in learning about the dedication those of you have regardless of the income. Thank you for teaching from a place of passion and sharing your generosity with us! ♥️👏🏼🎁
it’s a two way street - I cannot think how someone like me could meet so many people around the world without TH-cam or social media. Though there are many negatives, we are also extremely fortunate to have this at our fingertips.
I love your channel, Liz, and do not miss watching a video when you upload since subscribing (and I believe I've binge watched all of your films). You have truly inspired me to take up watercolor, something I had previously only dreamed of and that for a very long time. Blessings for 2025!
Congratulations Liz on the million plus views! My diminutive channel is growing slowly but I'm interested in how it will progress over the next couple of years. Our niche may not be high paying, but some of the stuff that gets millions of views I have to scroll by quickly 😱. Apparently YT doesnt prioritise Lives, so keep doing what you're doing, whilst there's hay to be made, which is at least for the next few years as the world continues transition to online content, the YT audience is still growing. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Liz, I'm late to the you tube game and managed to get monetised this month and I've been underwhelmed by the money earned this month, it's been really useful to watch this and set my expectations realistically, especially as we are in the same niche, I've worked so bloomin hard to get here and although I really enjoy the painting and teaching element the editing is hard work and has been a huge learning curve. I hope I manage to grow in the same way as you, as a teacher it's nice to know I'm helping others achieve their goals. I feel pretty overwhelmed by what to next re online classes, so I'm just taking it slowly and I've really enjoyed your video. Thank you.
Thank you Liz. I find the whole thing fascinating, including a fair bit of frustration at the disparity in who is earning what, but I guess all that just reflects the state of the world we live in. Regardless I echo every kind comment below - your passion and your approach is what makes your videos engaging. Wishing you all the best in the coming year! ❤❤❤
What I find crazy, is the fact that advertisers don't seem to understand how much artists and crafters spend on their supplies. I spend much more on my art supplies than I do on tech. And I'm "into" tech.
Miss Liz! You are charming! Thank you for. all your tips the past couple years. I've learned from you! Today, for instance, I learned that a FORTNIGHT is still a measure of time where you live! I was sort of blown away by that! Love ya! ❤
@@LizChadertonArt The only place fortnight appears in California as a measurement of time, is in classic literature and possibly some random history classes. :). With the popularity of the game by the same name, I think it's too late to even bring it back. ALAS!
Thank you! That is so interesting and helpful! I’m enjoying your channel! My goal this year is to make lots of watercolor bookmarks! I gave one to my daughter-in-law for Christmas, watercolor herbs. I’m planning to paint local scenes (Kansas City) and sell them in a one day art fair here. We’ll see! I have Hahnemühle Watercolour Bookmark Pad coming tomorrow! I also saved wrapping paper and napkins from Christmas Day to use in a thank you mixed media collage bookmark! Thanks for all your inspiration from the other side of the ocean!
Great video, LIz! I have thought about starting a TH-cam channel to simply document my knowledge about my woodturning airbrushing and finishing and share it with others. Letting us know that you spend 3-4 hours a week producing a video makes it a doable venture, and for me was the most important piece of knowledge you shared. I agree that if you are making TH-cam videos, you need to focus on something you are passionate about. A lot of people I know on FB ask if I have a TH-cam Channel. I might think about starting one this year.
Im a subscriber and its great to know how this all works. Thanks this was really interesting, i had no idea. Hope you've had a lovely Christmas with your friends and family wherever you are. Take care Jo in France 🇫🇷
To count as a view on TH-cam, a viewer must watch at least 30 seconds of an ad, or the entire ad if it's shorter than 30 seconds. Interactions with the ad can also count as a view. TH-cam counts views to ensure that they come from real people. If a viewer skips an ad after watching less than 30 seconds, the advertiser doesn't have to pay for that view
Thank you for this video - super informative! One question I have - is the small amount of money you earn from TH-cam premium due more to the small number of viewers you have that are on premium, or does TH-cam pay a poor percentage for those viewers? I was thinking of signing up for premium so I can watch my painting channels ad free, but don’t want it to financially penalize the creators!
Thank you for sharing this information with all of us. I’ve often wondered what the truth was behind the curtain. Thank you for the content you create and the enjoyment you have shared with us from your passion.
I loved your stream on the business side of the TH-cam channel information. I have a question, I pay for premium service for TH-cam so I have ad free music and streaming. Does that mean that any of the channels I follow faithfully do not receive any credit for my views? If that is true, my subscriptions and their likes, thumbs up and comments wouldn't count for them, like yours? Very curious.
Thank you for the very useful information Liz. Very nice to know that all your valuable videos were done from an iPad. I tried filming my small weekly classes and creating a video for those who were missing attendance. I then made a private channel and send them a link. They were such poor quality! I found recordings the classes live was difficult as I would forget to start and stop filming properly Filming/ editing became a challenge for my skills. Do you have any advice as to how to “ see” while filming, What Editing software to use Any General tips? I have a few Snowbirds that would appreciate my sending her films when she goes home for the Summer seasons. Can you remind me of the recordings you may have already published on a suggested set up? Thanks you are a British Rock star!! Theresia
I use iMovies in my iPad to edit. I’ve never done a behind the scenes, as I don’t think my set up is anything to aspire to. But perhaps I could have a go at putting something together 🤔
"I'm just a woman, sitting in my shed, talking about watercolour." That, or a version of it (e.g., "... a person... playing with watercolour") would be great on a mug/ tshirts. And *you* might as well do it before someone/thing else does😉😅. With a Liz watercolour to go with the words. Put me down for a t-shirt! Size medium!

Very interesting & informative. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
“gouache wash off” technique is one of my favourites! Thank you for all the support.
I'm so glad I found you. You are real. Love to watch. You have helped me to find a less anxious life. May never sell a painting because I am happy giving them out. Wishing you peace and happiness as well.
I am really touched to hear that.
Nice going, more will come for sure. I know I've been passing your channel around ;)
Thank you so much. Please do!
love your channel Liz. I'm in Canada and look forward to your weekly videos. Also I think your paintings are fantastic.
Thank you so much!
I so appreciate all the prep time and actual live time you spend to share your videos which I learn so much from. You are not paid enough!😊
It would be nice if it were a bit more 😆
Hello Liz, I would like to say thank you for continuing your channel! 💖 I'm glad it is as enjoyable and useful for you as it is for us. I'm sorry you made a little less £ this year. That's so strange! I admit that I usually press "Skip" on the commercials, but I will let some play out now. 😉
I still don't know who those other TH-cam people are, but I'm sure I wouldn't like them.
thank you so much! Your support is lovely
You say a live is too hard, I think your edited videos are too hard. Lol I rather go live once a week instead of filming, editing, posting. But I do appreciate your videos. You are such an encouragement to us artists.
but if it all goes horribly wrong, then no one sees! I’m sure something would fall off in a live!
@ Oh yes. Things do go wrong. 🤦🏻♀️I filmed the side of my head the whole live instead of my painting. 🖼️ I was so upset. But most the time it works out ok.
I would love to see a domestika course where you teach us how to make loose and expressive watercolor like yours. You are so inspirational
I don’t know what they would be like to work with….
Wonderful! it is such a gorgeous medium
Thank you Lizz! You lifted my spirits. I love your humor and I wish you a colorfull 2025!
and the same to you
You hit the nail on the head when you said you found your tribe.
Don't know what sort of videos those big earners post, but I haven't heard of any of them, let alone watched any of their videos!
skits, pranks, challenges….. stick to watercolour 😆
Thanks for being so open about utube. I’m happy you earn something but, am more interested in your creativity, & enjoy your little chats & experimenting, also your paintings. Happy 2025. Thank you.
Don’t worry, I have no plans to try and become a TH-cam guru!
Thanks for all you do Liz I have learned so much from you
Thank you - that makes me very happy
You are so welcome
Really useful and informative. Thank you ❤ I must say, if someone told me I looked like a Hogwarts teacher I’d be delighted 😂
I don’t think they meant it as a compliment! I decided most Hogwarts actors are national treasures, so I would take it as a plus!
@ Good decision 😁
Thank you for your dedication Liz. I appreciate you. You are a fantastic teacher! Wishing you a happy new year in 2025.
Thank you! You too!
You’ve worked hard and I’ve certainly appreciated. Thank you. Have a fab 2025
Thank you! You too!
@ you… not only generous but gracious! So grateful for the connection. 🌟
@@miriammoyer7271 I turn to TH-cam for all sorts of knowledge
Bravo Liz! Love your channel and content! From one WC artist to another all the best for 2025! ❤🎉
thank you so much!
I love your channel, Liz, and do not miss watching a video when you upload since subscribing (and I believe I've binge watched all of your films). You have truly inspired me to take up watercolor, something I had previously only dreamed of and that for a very long time. Blessings for 2025!
That is so wonderful to hear!
I got some stone paper for Christmas so I may be watching you for tips!
Thank you.
Very interesting thanks Liz
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you Liz. ❤❤❤
and all the best to you too x
What I find crazy, is the fact that advertisers don't seem to understand how much artists and crafters spend on their supplies. I spend much more on my art supplies than I do on tech. And I'm "into" tech.
That’s a really good point. individual items are lower priced, but it soon adds up!
I'm new here and looking to add more techniques to my work!
hopefully you will find lots of interest
Thank you for sharing your spirit and talent. They are each amazing!
Thank you so much!
Thanks, Liz. Really helpful video. Not that I’m thinking of doing a channel!
But it’s good to know things work, isn’t it?
Good on you! 🎉talented and humble
Thank you so much 🤗
I love watching your channel as I always learn something interesting and new. Do keep it up.
You are my favorite watercolor teacher! Thank you for sharing!! Looking forward to next year 😊
Yay! Thank you!
Very interesting and informative. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Miss Liz! You are charming! Thank you for. all your tips the past couple years. I've learned from you! Today, for instance, I learned that a FORTNIGHT is still a measure of time where you live! I was sort of blown away by that! Love ya! ❤
Do you not say fortnight? My mother used to tell me off for saying two weeks!
@@LizChadertonArt The only place fortnight appears in California as a measurement of time, is in classic literature and possibly some random history classes. :). With the popularity of the game by the same name, I think it's too late to even bring it back. ALAS!
@@Nanakinsz it’s alive and kicking in the UK!
@@LizChadertonArt That's just so awesome, I love this discovery of the week!
Thanks for all your inspiration from the other side of the ocean!
wonderful. I’ve recorded a few more ideas for January too
Great video, LIz!
Do it! As long as you enjoy it, you don’t know where it might lead you. It doesn’t have to be a Hollywood production
You’re doing great! Love your channel! ❤God bless you!
thank you so much
Im a subscriber and its great to know how this all works. Thanks this was really interesting, i had no idea. Hope you've had a lovely Christmas with your friends and family wherever you are. Take care Jo in France 🇫🇷
Thank you! You too! Glad it was interesting
Thank you for doing the films. I love your animal paintings so much.
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks for sharing. The watercolor community is one of the best and artist like you are a big part of that.
Thank you so much Liz for sharing your talent generously with us! I loved watching you as a new subscriber this year from USA , Merry Christmas
Thank you so much! and happy new year
You ARE a Hogwarts teacher! Because your art is enchanting!
Thanks!
But do we have to watch/listen to the ads all of the way through in order for the artist to get paid by TH-cam?
To count as a view on TH-cam, a viewer must watch at least 30 seconds of an ad, or the entire ad if it's shorter than 30 seconds. Interactions with the ad can also count as a view.
TH-cam counts views to ensure that they come from real people. If a viewer skips an ad after watching less than 30 seconds, the advertiser doesn't have to pay for that view
Thank you! Very interesting!❤
I believe it is because there’s a small percentage of viewers on Premium. TH-cam *says* creators shouldn’t miss out.
Creators get a small pro rata portion of the Premium subscription - so yes, you do count!
Do you have any advice as to how to “ see” while filming,
What Editing software to use
Any General tips? I have a few Snowbirds that would appreciate my sending her films when she goes home for the Summer seasons.
Can you remind me of the recordings you may have already published on a suggested set up?
Thanks you are a British Rock star!!
Theresia
I use iMovies in my iPad to edit. I’ve never done a behind the scenes, as I don’t think my set up is anything to aspire to. But perhaps I could have a go at putting something together 🤔
TH-cam doesn't pay you enough ❤
it feels like it’s been harder work this year. I think the uncertainty in the economy translates through.
@LizChadertonArt I definitely feel the impending doom... It was hard enough already. Sigh... We have art though. That's all I am focused on.
"I'm just a woman, sitting in my shed, talking about watercolour."
That, or a version of it (e.g., "... a person... playing with watercolour") would be great on a mug/ tshirts. And *you* might as well do it before someone/thing else does😉😅. With a Liz watercolour to go with the words. Put me down for a t-shirt! Size medium!
ooh my own line of ‘merch’. Could be fun 😊
