Those are the extremes of the spectrum. I was feeling pretty good following along with Colleen. Then when John explained his part it opened my eyes to how long the road is ahead for me. I knew the ancient Egyptians abbreviated quite a bit. But substitution, this is brand new to me. Thank you both for a fantastic video.

Great video as always. And for those that thought they already knew all this..... John’s walk through of perturbation I am guessing left a few heads sore, and many more with a healthy amount of respect. Excellent and clear teaching. Please keep up the great content.

    Looking forward to your next.

When I was in school, there was no reviewing video or audio; you had only your one lecture- - and your notes !
And you never knew when - "There'll be an examination on this material on Wednesday next at 7 AM."
Everyone on this channel no doubt has
read all about the pioneers in the early
    beginnings of Egyptology;
Champollion was one. He left a quote I'm sure you've all seen already, but
for a budding enthusiast, with a special penchant for hieroglyphics,
It's always stuck with me - "It is a complex system, a writing that is pictorial [ideograms], symbolic [determinatives] and phonetic [phonograms] at one and the same time, in a single text, a single phrase
and even in a single word. Each of these types of character aids in notation of ideas by different means..."
I know at least one of you out there here taken an interest in far Eastern languages, Chinese I'll bet - probably Mandarin. The similarities are there to be sure, but, and no offense, but
hieroglyphics are so much more fun.
Life is just too short to throw my fun away always in favor of the practical.

Every video, every single one, is so informative and fascinating. I'm so happy I found these passionate, intelligent people who teach such complicated information without even a hint of arrogance. I'm thoroughly convinced that the one dislike on this video had to be an accident OR they read some hieroglyphs in the wrong direction and thought the Egyptians were insulting their mother. No way it's a genuine dislike.

Thank you for another superb presentation! As a student in 1978, our class was able to take a field trip from Oregon to Seattle to view the exhibition, Treasures of Tutankhamun. Being in that space, surrounded by all of the truly exquisite artifacts from the famous tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh was an experience beyond compare. My hobby of linguistics has given me the knowledge to follow most of this. I would hazard a guess some of the weak sounds influenced vowels back in the day, but I cannot say for sure. I can only wonder if at some point Egyptian had a vowel/consonant shift that made the weak sounds weak but still useful when written. The way languages change and that fossilises into written systems has always fascinated me. Hieroglyphs show it in spades.

Thank you for yet another truly interesting video! An idea I had for an episode is to talk about the place and/or role of women in Egyptian culture and/or society. I understand that this is a broad subject, but if there is an interesting dynasty regarding this subject for example, you could maybe focus on that. Another idea I had is to talk about how prominent religion was in everyday life. In hieroglyphics it seems to be quite prominent. However, you stated that hieroglyphics were rarely used in everyday life.
Looking forward to the next video (even if it does not talk about my proposed topics ;))!

Thank you so much for posting these videos. They are absolutely fascinating, and beautiful to watch. I do have a question that perhaps you might be able to answer regarding a certain crown that some deities are seen wearing, the hemhem. Some depictions of the hemhem crown has three atefs in the center, whilst others only have one atef. Is there some symbolic meaning between the two? Also there are some that lack the atef and instead only have the horns, solar disk, and two feathers. Why does all of the things mean? Thank you.

Ohh my gosh, I am feeling so much sorry I have missed to join your How to read Hieroglyphs course now because there is something which is need to be learned. I believed I can start over with Late Egyptian at university but then I discovered Late Egyptian is just the language for literature, love poems, letters and administration in the era of the New Kingdom and Middle Egyptian is the correct and needed language for official inscriptions on monuments and theology. So - I have begun with Late Egyptian and missed I should have started with Middle Egyptian which is more useful for me - because i studied egyptian archaeology moduls before.

Watching videos about ancient Egyp wakes my curiosity up. I’m a Mexican 23 years old guy who’s always had memories about being the youngest pharaoh (tutankhamun) I even have drawings from my childhood of Egyptian landscapes.
When I was 3 I told my family the way we lived in Egypt and I described my own death (a spear on my torso while riding a car or something with horses).
I feel like lots of memories could come to me if I had a chance to visit the place where I lived many years ago.

any academic who isn't afraid to use the term "enchantment" gets my full support 🙂
the glyphs are highly magical when read, written and spoken. king tut was highly protected by magic spells (darling of the priesthood , since he abolished his fathers "atum" one god idea: 18th dynasty), spell protection is also why the second and third shrines (probably) remained undisturbed (although grave robbers had entered in antiquity). some have stated tut's unbroken seals read:
"death will come on swift wings to all who disturb the king's rest"
maybe colleen or john will read this and confirm 😉 (i've always wanted to know)!

I’m studying Archeology, no idea how it is in other countries but where I live you first have a bachelor training which takes three years, after which there’s one more year for your master degree. During those years you can choose a branch to specialise in like Egyptology, classic archeology, history of art, etc. So four years is the minimum but you could choose to go for a second bachelor, a second master, or even a doctorate degree
