New Cross Slide Handwheel For The Mini Lathe - 1/2

    When I made the new handwheel for my Mini Lathes Carriage, I run into the problem of not having enough space any more for the cross slide handle. The handle of the cross slide now collided with the new made carriage handwheel. Provisorily I switched to a smaller handle for the cross slide, but my plan was to upgrade the cross slide too with a whole new handle. Now this project is done and here comes the first part of the built video.
    The space on this little machines is very limited so everything remains really tight. But nontheless the result is really satisfying. I decided to install a much bigger scale drum which makes it easier to read and use the dial. In this part of the video I'm making the new spacer/mounting block which gives about 15mm more travel, the bearing block part, the graduated scale drum and the handwheel. The next part will be about the sofisticated locking mechanism for the dial which is copied from swiss high end Schaublin machines, the new spindle and nut and everything else for completing this project.
    I hope you enjoy my work. Feel free to comment, like and if you want more: subscribe to the channel.
    Thanks!

      That is a sort of cold bluing for aluminium? I thought about that, but was worried, that this fluid is rather toxic so I tried the safe method with the stick. Probably not as long lasting as aluminium black but so far works quite well.

      @WeCanDoThatBetter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean these scissor type knurling tools? That is a totally different knurling method. My tool is a cut knurling tool. This means the knurl is cut into the material using a sharp cutting wheel at an angle. This method introduces much less force to the lathes spindle than form knurling which presses the knurl into the part. Off course the scissor type tools won't introduce as much force to the spindle but also they press the knurl instead of really cutting it. Both ways are ok and give good results.

    • @WeCanDoThatBetter
      @WeCanDoThatBetter  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment! The new lead screw I installed on the cross slide has 2mm pitch. That means 1 revolution of the cross slide handwheel results in 2mm travel of the crossslide which means 4mm diameter reduction of the workpiece (as reducing 2mm on the radius means reducing 4mm on the diameter). I wanted the dial to read the diameter reduction so I devided 4mm by 80 lines and got 0,05mm diameter reduction per line on the cross slide dial. I hope that makes some sense to you :)
