This happened to me as well. It to over 2 years for them to diagnose my epilepsy. When I would be having seizures, I would go to the hospital, because I didn’t know what was happening to me. I was turned away multiple times. If I didn’t have a family doctor, I would probably never have gotten a diagnosis. I was treated like I was a drug seeker and turned away. I’m a married middle aged white male with three kids. The gas lighting has no bounds.

Me too, I am a 35 year old white male and every time I go to get help with my psychosis and bipolar I am treated as a drug seeker. Even when I got a very bad burn on my hand, 3rd degree and a month off work, I was not provided with adequate pain relief, they actually purposely ignored me whenever I got my bandages changed, and I get it, I was so injured it was hard for me to dress properly so I looked disheveled, but I was prescribed 20 Alieve Naproxen for 40$ instead of just getting a proper prescription for Hydromorphone or T3's ... Nurses are amazing, doctors are total losers!!!

It’s not only being experienced by women and minorities. It’s a general issue of the Canadian medical system.

I’m a man and I had to visit my clinic three times before they would take my symptoms and my suggested diagnosis seriously. It’s pure incompetence.

Last month I had cataract surgery on my left eye. I felt a sharp cut to my eye which was quite painful. I said “OW” loudly. The surgeon stopped and put another numbing drop in. I felt a sharp poke this time. I said “OW” again. The surgeon continued on telling me that I was just feeling pressure. I let him know that I know the difference between the sensation of pressure versus the sensation of sharp pain. Then he told me I’d feel a sensation like my eye was widening. It felt more like something was stabbing through to the back of my eye, a very deep and sharp pain. I started crying and felt the same pain again when the lens was flattened. The whole experience was traumatic. He asked me if I was ready to do the other eye in 2 weeks. I replied “there’s no effing chance of that”. He laughed and sent me to the recovery room.
My follow up was the next day and I repeated the story to his staff. They said that my brain interpreted the pressure as pain and that it might not happen with the other eye. He came in the room and told me that if I had felt the scalpel then he would have been scraping me off the ceiling and that I was totally numb. I was strapped down with a drape sealed over my eye, a clamp on it, and had a blanket over me with a person standing above me with a scalpel in his hand. Who’s going to jump up in that situation? I asked if he planned to anesthetize my other eye differently so I didn’t have such a traumatic experience again. He told me he’d do it exactly the same way, no different. I cancelled the surgery on my right eye immediately. Absolutely no apology, compassion, or acknowledgement that he hurt me. Now I’m terrified to trust a different surgeon to fix my right eye. 😢

It took me 25 years to get the hip surgery I needed because I couldn’t get my family doctor to do the testing needed. Then I was accused by a GI with a misdiagnosis, went to another GI and was diagnosed in HER office within 5 minutes, saving my life after looking for a simple diagnosis for over 5 years for that.

My female doctor feom a part of the world that does not respect women was "monitoring" my abnormal pap smears, I moved and found out that is absolutely not the medical course of action and saw a gynecologist. After a year of several horrifying procedures and the Gardasil vaccine I had my first clear pap in 20 years. I asked to take Gardasil 15 years ago and she just wanted to "monitor" with pap smears. Our quality of doctors has severely gone down and I truly believe it is intentional. Cervical cancer only has a 65% cure rate, she was trying to kill me.

I’ve had this happen an insane amount of times, I’ve been in so many traumatic accidents, broken bones car crashes, concussions the list goes on. I go into a hospital or doctors for the pain I experience and the doctors right away are usually rude, act like they don’t believe you, send you for tests and always play it down wile you’re hurting the entire time then basically just tell you to take Advil and lay down. Well it’s been absolute years of this kind of treatment and something definitely has to change.

Very important subject even internationally where we have ”free” healthcare. Same in Sweden, both my parents were diagnosed with cancer too late because of this matter! They look at the costs because they don’t want to spend government money but because they are like that my parents cancer treatments were probably 10 times higher than if they were taken seriously and scanned from the beginning.

Trust your own body and insticts always. Also ask for a referral if not happy with your doctor's answer, legally they can't refuse it.

Absolutely NOT, it is already illegal. Have a look a Privacy laws, provincial or in the absence, the federal law applies. Private clinics are also bound under the PIPEDA Act. Before you scare people, make sure you know what you are talking about. Do you realize a comment like this could cause people to not get treatment that they need? This is irresponsible commenting.
