- JMM 2020: Kenneth A. Ribet, University of California, Berkeley, gives the AMS Retiring Presidential Address on "A 2020 View of Fermat's Last Theorem." This lecture was given on January 16, 2020 at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Denver, CO.

Ken Ribet deserves far more accolade for the proof of the Fermat’s Last Theorem than he has been given credit for. His proof of the ε-conjecture (originally proposed by Jean-Pierre Serre), and now known as Ribet’s theorem, is not only an indispensable bridge to the final proof, but has so far proven to be the only path. Not to take anything away from Andrew Wiles’ brilliant work, or Ribet’s fundamental contributions, but I believe the proof of the Fermat’s Last Theorem should really be regarded as a true collaborative effort also involving others like Barry Mazur (Torsion theorem, Galois deformations, as well as other insights and suggestions), Nick Katz (for having aptly identified the insurmountable problem in Wiles’ original approach), and Richard Taylor (for having helped Wiles construct the final correct approach).
Yes, Barry Mazur for telling Ken Ribet that he, Ken, had proved the epsilon conjecture when he didn't realise he had!

Ribet absolutely deserves accolades, but when you say it 'has so far proven to be the only path,' what about Ribet's slide at 51:29 which he skipped over ("Avoiding Ribet and Tunnell")? Maybe this argument still uses Ribet's techniques even if it technically doesn't rely directly on Ribet's theorem?
Wiles solved the problem. Finished. Done. Ken Ribet doesn't get partial credit for making numerous talks where he does his best to claim glory for not solving the problem. It doesn't work that way.

I am just a popular maths fan and have an interest in Fermat. I understood maybe 5% of Kenneth Ribet’s lecture but I found the whole thing engrossing and fascinating. His ability to keep people like me interested when most of it is incomprehensible is a massive credit to his knowledge and presentation skills. I have never heard someone speak with such clarity and fluidity. Thank you.
richard slater Thank you for that comment. As another popular math(s) fan at a similar level, my reaction to Ribet's lecture was the same as yours. The only thing I would add is that in addition to being an unusually fine presenter, he also comes off as a genuinely nice person.

@@user-hq7mz8us2w I have never heard Ribet claim he proved Fermat. As far as I know, he wasn’t working on it at all, certainly not before Wiles proof. He provided a significant step in the process that pushed Wiles towards the Tanyama Shimura conjecture, but that still left an enormous amount to do.
Thanks for an extremely efficient delivery. The principles of the different elements relevant to the proof, and how they connect, are for the first time clear to me, both part by part, and as a whole. And that is quite significant, and says a lot about the lucidity of the speech. 4×23 is of course not 96. But when explained as 4×23, then 92 is readily deduced.

I would have felt better Dr Ribet had given a bit more credit to Andrew Wiles for proving Fermat’s last theorem. The world badly needs heroes and Wiles is one of mine.
Wiles is mentioned on about 50% of the slides here, as if it wasn't incredibly clear to everyone in the audience that Wiles proved FLT already. Ken Ribet is mentioned 25 times in Wiles' original paper and shows up in many of Wiles' talks on the subject. What are you people talking about? Many mathematicians provided tools to this project.

If you want some good ole fashion algebra, take a look at infinite descent or sophie germain's proof of FLT for n=3. If you want the real deal, have a look at profinite groups, infinite galios groups and their internal structure, complete local rings, so then you can rigorously uncover galois representations of elliptic curves and modular forms, and their other invariants and semistable representations... if you have any idea of group theory, field theory, galois cohomology and deformation theory. I bet it sounds intimidating. This is what it takes to rigorously prove fermat's last theorem. The lecture was just a lecture, it didn't provide a rigorous proof, that's just a bit of clickbait. How can you expect such a proof to be summed up in a lecture anyways. If it is so easy, why don't you send a proof to me and to arXiv.
