There's a version of this on youtube where Roy Clark is doing a duet w/Glen Campbell. Glen is on a 12 string and Clark on a 6 string. It's phenomenal.

My b-i-law was at the venue in charge and his buddy was tasked with picking up Roy at the at the airport and getting him to the campus venue and then the stage sober enough to perform. Front row, 8-10 feet away from him--it was a GREAT show! He was an ENTERTAINER. His band was right up there with him. Very early 1970s.

In one song he started out with the guitar and then moved to a banjo, then a mandolin, then the piano AND then to a trumpet, all in one song! He really can do it all and masters them all. Then he ended the show with Malaguena, one man, one guitar, and one spotlight. He brought the house down.

One of the earliest recordings is by Byrle Ives in 1949. The Blues Brothers (John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd) even featured it in their movie. this man came from a time when they didn't have flipping hair or fire works or huge light shows to dazzle the crowd all they had to work with was a bit of taint and years of HARD practice. perfect to you and me, but ill wager if you could ask him he could point out were he wasn't, this man WORKED at it! This is a man doing and tanking pride in his craft, his hands made art, when i hear this man play i am honored that when he played he played for us.

When my wife's father retired from the Air Force in the early 70s he settled with his English wife and 5 children back home in eastern Tennessee. Roy Clark used to visit and pick guitars with her uncle and older brother. Their farm was a place he could visit and get away from it all for a spell.

He hosted a landmark and top rated TV show. It was called Hee Haw, and it ran for twenty or thirty years from 1969 into the Nineties. It combined silly comedy skits with top of the charts live country performances.

Hey MrLBoyd, I have to whole heartedly agree with you about Roy! I grew up listening to country and of course watching HEEHAW, but back then I was too young to appreciate Roy.
Roy Clarke had a spirit about him that always gave off a love of people and of his craft. He is/was one of the most genuine people in the business and I wish
I understood earlier in my life.
However you give off the same vibe MRLBOYD! Your spirit also shines through
and your attitude in life is positive. Glad that I found you on YT!

I was Roy’s production manager/sound engineer for a few decades starting in 1986. He was one of the most talented entertainers and all around great human being. I learned so much from traveling the world with him. I once apologized for bringing him a second stack of pictures for him to autograph and he said, “I might complain when I’m tired, but I’d sure hate it more if I wasn’t tired because they quit asking.”

I don't know if it's still available, but there used to be a video on youtube with Clark playing with 12-year-old Jimmy Henley on Banjo while Clark played the fiddle. Its a clip from Clark's TV show. As usual Clark is masterful and musically jokes back and forth with the youngster. Thing is, whether with the young kid or with anyone else, Clark never tried to upstage anyone. Rather, he gave others the spotlight. Having never really known about him before he died, I've come to realize he was a legend... and a gentleman.

Not all of Roy's songs are up-tempo. He does some great ballads also. One that you need to check out is a tear jerker called "Thank God And Greyhound".

The original version by Stan Jones was recorded in late 1948 or early 1949. A recording by Stan Jones and his Death Valley Rangers issued on Mercury records in May 1949. Fellow songwriter Eden Ahbez sent the song to Burl Ives, who recorded his own version in early 1949.

Ghost Riders in the Sky was written by Stan Jones in 1948. Vaughn Monroe had a hit with it in 1949. Another great version was by Lorne Greene. Many others have sung it, including Marty Robbins, Burl Ives, Frankie Laine. The Sons of the Pioneer had a great version, too. Fun fact. In the very late 40s and early 50s, Ken Curtis was the Sons of the Pioneer lead singer. Yep, the same man who played Festus on Gunsmoke.

Roy Clark is so good that I thought he might be playing left handed for the fun/challenge of it. Didn't realize the screen was flipped. Heck. Give the man 5 minutes... he could probably play it left handed.
