  • Carrizozo was founded in 1899. The town provided the main railroad access for Lincoln County, one of the largest counties in the country at the turn of the century. The community experienced a brief population boom in the early decades of the 1900s.
Prior to 1899, the area was primarily a few ranches and a stagecoach crossing with limited permanent settlement. Carrizozo was selected as the site for a station on the El Paso and Northeastern Railway (EP&NE) main line in 1899.
The name of the town is derived from the Spanish vernacular for reed grass (Carrizo), which grew abundantly in the region, providing a source of food for cattle. The town is referred to colloquially as "Zozo".
Carrizozo is about 35 miles (56 km) east of the Trinity Site, where the first nuclear bomb was detonated on July 16, 1945. The town received fallout from the mushroom cloud, resulting in radioactive contamination, which has dissipated in the ensuing decades.
Carrizozo’s unique aluminum burros are available at Gallery 408. Local artists paint them, selling them to locals and visitors to fund the local arts community and the local animal rescue organization.
